Safety Indication when the filters have to be
replaced. After welding it should be possible to
remove the headpiece, but to keep the respiratory protection on.
No parts of the r.p.u. should stick out of the back of the welder.

Problem DefinitionProblem Definition
ErgonomicsEasy replacement of the filters.Indication of full filters Low level of noise (< 75db).Vibrations from the motor should not
reach the welder. The airflow should not cause discomforts
while being used. The r.p.u. should not limit the sight on
the work piece.

Problem DefinitionProblem Definition
Technique/adequate performanceThe inside of the unit should be protected
against dust and small particles, to increase lifetime of the motor
The weight of the battery should become less then 1/3 of the present battery
The welding sparks should not affect the r.p.u.
? ! $
Veldi Respiratory unit
Problem DefinitionProblem Definition
Global DesignThe r.p.u. should have a uniform look, in
stead of just a combination of different parts.
The r.p.u. should look conform the preference of American, Asian or European market.

Financial advantageWhere possible use of standard productsAvoid complex design of the non-
standard partsAs few parts as possible, avoid screwsFinding a compromise between costs of
dismantling and lowest possible costs of the R.P.U

Easy replacement of batteries: like in a walkman
Indication of full filter:
Printplate measures the airflow: low airflow indicates full filter or empty battery
Free body Movement:
Integrated filter/motor in helmet: no hose
Separate moving mask

Batteries:
Sold in pack and also separate > obtainable everywhere
Filter:
Bigger diameter > One size filtercasing beholds all kinds of filters combinations
longer lifetime of filter:
Filters that dont fulfil the most severe regulations can be sold in other countries for less money
Change of filter = change of casing

Life cycle analysis of Life cycle analysis of the models with the models with TornadoTornado
? ! $
Veldi Respiratory unit
Conclusions LCAConclusions LCA
1. The two models have similar financial lines,
2. The disassembly time of the two models is much shorter with respect to that of Tornado,
3. The total cost/profit cumulative of the two models is much lower with respect to that of Tornado.
From the end-of-life comparison of the two models with Tornado, we can see that:
These characteristics are very important since in the near future, producers will have more responsibilities about the treatment of their end-of-life products.

Veldi Respiratory unit
Conclusions LCAConclusions LCA
1. The two models have similar environmental effects (MET points) lines,
2. The total environmental effects of the two models is worse with respect to that of Tornado,
3. The difference is more significant at the production stage,
4. There is a potential for improvement by focusing on types of materials (thermoplastics), weights of parts and manufacturing processes,
5. The end-of-life destinations associated to disassembled parts are compliant with legislation even if they have negative environmental effects.
With respect to the priorities of the near future: globalisation, lower end-of-life costs and compliance with legislation on environment, we can consider that the developed models are quite satisfactory.
From the life cycle comparison of the two models with Tornado, we can see that: ? ! $
