Scatter Plots and Line of Best Fit

• The best fitting line or curve is the line that lies as close as possible to all the data points.

• Regression is a method used to find the equation of the best fitting line or curve.

• Extrapolation the use of the regression curve to make predictions outside the domain of values of the independent variable.

• Interpolation is used to make predictions within the domain of values of the independent variable.


Remember to write an equation of a line...• Find slope (pick 2 points)• Find the yintercept using your slope and point. (y=mx+b)

*When putting in "years" for your "x"values can be too big for the calculator, so make the first year 0 and rename the other years in relation to "year 0."
