PREFACE
This edition of one of Gun than dKon mchog bsTan pa'i sgron
me's (1762-1823 n.Chr.) small philosophical essays is the
outcome of a need felt three years ago, when I - in coopera-
tion with the Geshe Dr. Lobsang Dargyay - prepared an anno-
tated translation of the text (this translation is to appear
separately): the need for a text printed in a way that it can
be surveyed and refered to easily, that quotations - espe-
cially verses - can be found at a glance, and that the
authorf s analytical divisions (sa bead) and the result of our
own analytical work is clearly reflected in the form of the
text.
The text is based on two modern Indian editions:
1. The Good Arrangement of the Three Doors of Emancipation.
Printed and Published by Shree Guru Deva, Varanasi 1964 (= **[*).
2. The Collected Works of Gun-than dKon-mchog-bstan-pa'i-
sgron-me. Reproduced from prints from the Lha-sa blocks by
Ngawang Gelek Demo, Vol.3, New Delhi 1972, No.II, pp.73-9.4
Since these modern editions show only minor variants and
carry no ma jor textual problems, I felt no need to try to get
hold of other textual sources, e.g. from copies of Guii than' s
gSun fbum extant in Ulaanbataar and Leningrad (cf. Lokesh
Chandra, Materials for a History of Tibetan Literature, Part
1, New Delhi 1963, p.35, note 6), although they probably re-
present the bKra sis fkhyil-edition mentioned by Gene Smith
(University of Washington Tibetan Catalogue, Seattle 1969,
p.82). Misprints have been tacitly corrected. The index of
works and authors includes an explanation of the abbreviated
forms of the titles used in this text.
