Paragraphs: What Exactly Are They?
You’ve been writing them for most of your life, but did you know that each paragraph has a job it MUST do?
Focus one: The Process Paragraph
Paragraphs
• About The Job They Must Do:
-Paragraphs must make sense! (Has unity and coherence)
-Paragraphs must contain details! (Examples, incidents, reasons, and facts, that support your topic sentence)
-Paragraphs must use some transitional words – Time Words – First, second, meanwhile, last, afterward, and many others.) Spatial Words (space words, and no not moon and stars! Words like; next to, in front, beside, behind, between.)
-Paragraphs must be complete! (No grammatical errors/Correct Grammar Usage/Correct Sentence Structure) (Parts of the 6+1 writing traits!)
The Mighty Process Paragraph
• Interesting Connection: Process and Expository are synonyms!
• A process paragraph does two things:
1) Gives directions by telling someone how to do something.
2) Giving information about how some process was or is to be completed.
The Mighty Process Paragraph cont.
• Important notes:
-When writing a process paragraph, don’t think that your audience (the people you are writing for) knows a lot about your topic. (Planting a Lemon
Free for example.)
-Grab those eyes! Make the instructions interesting and easy to understand.
