Acids The word “acid” means “sour” in latin.

Everyday examples: Lemon Juice (citric acid), vinegar, Hydrochloric Acid and Sulfuric Acid.

If a substance is an acid it is know as “acidic”

Some acids are not corrosive and found in our food.

Example 1: Citric acid

What is the acid in vinegar?

Ethanoic acid. Also ethanoic acid is

produced from wine.

Page 12: Acidsandbases ppt 2 yr7

But how can we get ethanoic acid from wine??

time Ethanol + Oxygen ethanoic acid If you want to speed the chemical reaction

leave the bottle opened.

What are organic acids?

All acids of animal and plant origin including ethanoic acid are said to be organic acid EXCEPT hydrochloric acid

Page 14: Acidsandbases ppt 2 yr7

What are mineral acids? They are not produced by living things. Geber ,chemist, discovered them . The first mineral was discovered

is :Nitric acid ,later they discovered sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.

Page 15: Acidsandbases ppt 2 yr7

Uses of nitric acid: They use it to separate silver and gold

as it dissolve silver but does not dissolve the gold.

Alkalis Opposite of acids. Equally as corrosive and dangerous as

acids. Alkalis are soluble in water”

How would you know if a substance is an acid or a base? The LITMUS test (Indicator Test)

How would you know how strong an acidic or a base is? pH scale. What does pH stand for? What does pH mean?
