OER and Bookstore

Challenges and Recommendations

Page 13: CCCOER Advisory Feb 19, 2014

F2012

• Start of our major OER implementation

• OER materials published through local publisher

• Sold in bookstore

Page 14: CCCOER Advisory Feb 19, 2014

Challenges

• Not enough workbooks were being ordered

• Students were having to wait for workbooks

• Students were not allowed to pre-order workbooks

• Bookstore markup (40%ish) still applies

Page 15: CCCOER Advisory Feb 19, 2014

Adjustment for Spring 2013

• Met with bookstore and publisher reps

• Bookstore agreed to order more books if publisher would guarantee returns of unused copies

• Bookstore markup (40%ish) still applies

Page 16: CCCOER Advisory Feb 19, 2014

Recommendations

• Communicate early with bookstore and involve them in planning

• Help them understand goals of OER and how they can be a part of helping students

• Be willing to compromise (i.e. 40% markup remained in place) to help them meet their bottom line

• Touch base with them each semester to keep communication lines open

Collaborating with the campus Bookstore

Collaborative Statistics• 1994 – 2007: for profit text;

– $38 bookstore cost; $50 student cost• #1 text sold at college in terms of quantity• 2008 – 2014: OER text

– with hard copy purchase option• First open textbook used at college

Page 19: CCCOER Advisory Feb 19, 2014

Logistics: 2008+• Met with Bookstore manager:

– Ordering hard copies for faculty• limited desk copies available from a grant• added <$1 to each hard copy cost sold to cover faculty,

library, tutoring center copies

– Expected great loss of sales• Initially sales went up, students used print copy as workbook• Each year more students using only online or pdf versions

– QOOP/Lulu cost under $30 for direct purchase– 15-20 % Discount for Bookstore ordering in volume– Bookstores still charge markup 24-28%

Page 20: CCCOER Advisory Feb 19, 2014

Outcomes

PROS• Still #1 text sold on

campus in terms of quantity

• Still good relations with Bookstore

• Reduced cost to students

• Saved students > $1m

CONS• Decreased sales at

decreased price.
