SHIFTING AGRICULTURE

INTRODUCTIONSHIFTING AGRICULTURE IS DONE IN CYCLONE

RAVAGED COASTAL VILLAGES BECAUSE THE LAND IS AFFECTED BY SALINE WATER.

THE NEED FOR SHIFTING AGRICULTURE ARISES IN THESE VILLAGES DUE TO SALINITY IN SOIL.

THE FARMERS SHOULD SHIFT FOCUS FROM RICE TO OTHER VEGETABLES FOR THE COMING WINTER.

The training is planned as part of a rehabilitation drive for farmers.

Trainers will concentrate on one village on each day of training.

The program is arranged to discuss and identify alternative crops that can be grown in the saline agricultural fields of the villages.

DISTRIBUTION OF QUALITY SEEDS IS IMPORTANT FOR A GOOD YIELD IN THE FIELDS. Agricultural training for saline conditions who subsequently used

seeds to grow vegetables. Initiative can be taken after becoming aware of the training from

word-of-mouth, collected seeds and can make an effort to grow vegetables with the seeds.

Distribute seeds of vegetables (Begun, Lanka, lalshak, Palongshak, mulo. Gajor, beet, olkapi, uchhe, borboti, vebdi, Lau, kumro).

The latter type, particularly the low lying field, has not observed a good yield in general as the salt comes up during drying up process. Relatively higher lands which were not regularly flooded by the tidal cycle have better yield.

Villagers can use the pond water mixed with tube well water. This should be the optimal solution , because the high iron content in tube well water can cause impedance to the growth of the vegetables.

Land condition and water availability has got a major impact on the outcome.

Farmers get a good yield by using the water from their own pond near the field. This water is not likely to be saline (or nonta)

Hence would be suitable.

Hence, Water from pond is favorable to the agriculture fields.

The villagers will regain their confidence and start believing the possibilities of farming in the saline water affected land using the specialized techniques.

The vegetable harvest in winter is a major step towards restoring their agriculture based livelihood.

Seeds distributed properly to farmers will encourage alternative crops.
