CONVENTIONS

Listed below are the conventions of a film magazine. We will be using these convections as a guideline during the production of our magazine front cover;

Consistence with fonts and variations in font size Consistence with main colours used – usually would be

associated with chosen genre and therefore in our case it would be the genre of horror

The image - close up or mid shot and would be the main feature within our film magazine. Usually is an eye catching image to grab the audience/buyers attention

Cover lines of other films that are similar to ours or of other recent releases of films/reviews.

Masthead – either Total Film or Empire Rule of thirds – to ensure that the image is central and text

is suited around it

TOTAL FILM Taking a look more closely at the conventions of a magazine we found

that Total Film includes its iconic masthead on each of its magazine front covers and it is mostly found in white. However we also found an example of a magazine were the masthead is not in white, but its tailored to the colour scheme on the cover.

Total Film also includes cover lines and sub headings more consistently throughout its published magazine front covers

and usually imagery ranges long mid shot to extreme close ups. More frequently mid close ups are used.

EMPIRE Comparing Total Film magazine front covers to Empires we’re

able to see straight away that Empire uses less text and apart from special addition of magazines their masthead is always in red.

Empire have a large focus on close ups and mid close ups of the subject in the framing of the shot, and usually they are highlighted as the main feature within the magazine with no other cover lines or with a less amount compared to Total Film.
