Designed to promote interest in garbage-free lunch program at school
Citation preview
One day, the Green Team collected all the garbage from each classroom after lunch.
We collected 16.5 pounds of food waste, some of which could have been composted.
We also found a lot of things that could have been recycled.
1 large bin full of wrappers from cheese strings, fruit snacks, granola bars, cheese and cracker snacks, and Ziplok snack bags
food items that were not finished . . .or not even opened!
We found 53 containers that could have been recycled if they were clean.
Did you know . . .
Did you know . . .
that if you wash your plastic containers they can be put in the big blue recycling bin in your classroom?
One yogurt container in the garbage may not seem like very much but . . .
Here are 53 containers, the number collected on one day at our school.
Here are 265 containers, the number that would be collected at school in one week.
Wait! there is
another
whole page!
In one month at the same rate we would throw away 1060 containers!
1000
So . . . if there are that many containers thrown out in one month, how many would there be in one school year? Let's count.
2000
3000
4000
5000
6000
7000
8000
9000
10000
At that rate, there would be over
10 000 containers thrown in the garbage just
from our school!
Can you help?
Can you ask your parents to send your food in reusable containers?
If not, can you wash them out at school and put them in the big blue recycling bin?
Will you help work towards our goal of
bringing garbage-free lunches?
