What are the Standards for

Mathematical Practice?

1. Make sense of problems and

persevere in solving them.

2. Reason abstractly and

quantitatively.

3. Construct viable arguments

and critique the reasoning of

others.

4. Model with mathematics.

5. Use appropriate tools

strategically.

6. Attend to precision.

7. Look for and make use of

structure.

8. Look for and express

regularity in repeated

reasoning.

The Big Hike Mariah Williams

Page 12: Ipadsummit 2015final copy

Raul and Mia are both hiking

down a hill trying to get to

camp. The camp is located -

120 below sea level. Raul

took his group to Grizzly

Peak which has an elevation

of 182 feet while Mia took her

group to Mt. Sawtooth which

had an elevation of 324 feet.

Mia is hiking down the the hill

at 3 feet per minute while

Raul is hiking down the hill at

2 feet per minute. Which

group will get to the campsite

first?

Page 13: Ipadsummit 2015final copy

Raul's group= -2x+182

Raul's group started at 182 feet and

went down 2 feet each minute. So for

every minute, Raul's group hiked

down 2 feet so the slope would be 2/1.

After 1 minute of hiking, Raul's group

was at 180 then after 2 minutes his

group was at 178 and after 3 minutes

his group was at 176. I then found the

rule which was -2x+182. Then i found

the range in elevation from Grizzly

Peak to the campsite and that was

302 feet. To find how many minutes it

took Raul's group to reach their

basecamp you have to divide the

range from the mountain to their

campsite and that was 302 then divide

it by how many feet per minute and

that was 2. So i divided 302 by 2 and

got 151. It took Raul's group 151

minutes to reach their basecamp.

Mia's group= -3x+ 324

Mias group started at 324 feet and

went down 3 feet each minute. For

every minute, Mias group hiked

down 3 feet so the slope would be

3/1. After 1 minute of hiking, Mias

group was at 321 then after 2

minutes her group was at 318 and

after 3 minutes her group was at

315. After I realized the slope was

3/1, I found the rule which was -

3x+324. Then i found the range in

elevation from Mt. Sawtooth to the

basecamp and that was 444 feet. I

divided the range (444) with how

many feet per minute which is 3.

So i divided 444 by 3 and got 148.

It took Mias group 148 minutes to

reach their campsite.

Page 14: Ipadsummit 2015final copy
Page 15: Ipadsummit 2015final copy

Mia's group got back to camp first because it

only took her group 148 minutes to get back

to the campsite while it took Raul's group

151 minutes to get back to his campsite.
