Interesting Facts In 1957, Glenn gained national

recognition, setting a transcontinental speed record by flying from Los Angeles to New York in 3 hours and 23 minutes. In 1958, he was one of the original seven astronauts selected to the U.S. space program's Project Mercury. Four years later, he would become a national hero.

Glenn flew 59 missions during World War II. After serving two years as a flight instructor, he volunteered for the Korean War, during which he flew 63 missions and shot down three MIGs. He was awarded a number of medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross six times.

NASA Honors a Legendary Astronaut

On February 20, 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr., became the first American to orbit Earth. On the 44th anniversary of his historic mission, NASA presented Glenn with an Ambassador of Exploration Award in honor of this achievement.
