INFLUENCES We have researched many psychological films before coming up with our film storyline. We made sure we fully researched the conventions that a psychological horror film used in order for our media task to be a success.

One of the main influences

The Afterlife

This is about a girl Anna Taylor who is being told that she is dead and that she cannot leave the funeral directors house, however she knows she is not dead. This film was distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment. We also used the poster of this film for inspiration for our film.

Watching parts of these film really helped influence our film, it helped us to understand the conventions of psychological horror and how to make use of our 2 minute time that we had.

‘A young woman caught between life and death... and a funeral director who appears to have the gift of transitioning the dead, but might just be intent on burying her alive.’ film pitch

WHAT IS A MEDIA INSTITUTION

DEFINITON:A media institution is an organization or company that is accountable for a media text. This can be through many ways, such as distribution, marketing, production or regulation, and they are often a profit based organization.

• There are different types of media institutions to suit different media products, eg film , adverts, magazines, documentary and newspapers.

MEDIA INSTITUTIONS THAT I MIGHT USE Our media product is a film opening, so I will be researching film institutions to distribute my media product. When choosing the media institution, I have carefully thought about the genre of my film and the genre of films that the media institutions have biggest success in distributing. I have also decided to think about my target audience, so for that reason it is very unlikely that I will choose an institute that target a similar age rang and a similar audience to my audience. My film opening is horror, so I will be hoping to find a film intuition that distribute many horror films.

Here are a few institutions I am going to be looking at.

1. 20th century fox

2. Hammer Productions

3. Lionsgate

All of the above institutions have previous success in the distribution of horror films, and films in other genres that target our target audience

INFORMATION PROFILES: 20TH CENTURY FOX20th century fox is a film cooperation and it is one of the biggest film institutions in America, The company was founded in 1904 and since then has become one of the most recognized names in film industry throughout the world, the studio is a subsidiary of News Cooperation. Fox have had many successful films produced and continue to do so and grow.20th century fox have their most successful films produced and distributed in the genre comedy and family home movies: here are some examples

· Alvin and the Chipmunks, Night At The Museum, Diary of a Wimpy Kid , The chronicles of Narnia, Avatar, Star wars, X-men.

Most of 20th century fox films are targeted to families with young children, because it is comedy it is suitable for families with children across all ranges. This is a negative point for them to distribute our movie, because the genre is different and the target audience is different too.

Although their most successful and profitable films come under the genre of comedy, fantasy and family films. Fox also have experience and success in the genre of horror too. Here are a few examples

The Omen (1976,suspense horror), Hell (2011, crime drama horror), Jennifer's Body (2009, black comedy horror), The Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008, supernatural horror)

These are just a few of their horror film successes, however I was not able to find a horror film which came under the subgenre of psychological horror, I also found out that the 20 th century fox targeted much older people when it came to their horror movies, this is another reason which makes me realize that the 20 th century fox would not be suited to distributing my film as they would not be able to make it as successful as another media institution could.

INFORMATION PROFILE: HAMMER PRODUCTIONS Hammer films are a UK based production which was founded in 1934. Unlike the 20 th century fox, hammer are a smaller based media institute but they have had many profitable successes which has helped them to continue to expand and build the media institution. Hammer productions are widely known for their distribution of films in genre of horror. This is a really positive thing, as they are totally focused on the distribution of horror, they have had many successes and they are experienced in the distribution and producing of horror films. They have major experience in marketing horror films to a wide range of different target audiences, however they used to b more known for gothic horror subgenres, but have slowly moved away from that.

Here are some of their biggest successes in distribution/ producing

The Curse of Frankenstein, Fear the night, Dracula, The Mummy .

Hammer is a UK based production and unlike American media productions, Hammer do not produce just mainstream films, they have experience in producing films for a wide range of different target audiences and for people with different taste in horror films, they produce a wide variety of sub genres with psychological horror being one of them. They also have many films which are targeted to the younger generation and although they are a smaller media institute they have proved to have had big successes in the horror genre film industry. This is why I am confident that I would chooses this company to distribute my film. In comparison with 20 th Century Fox they prove to be more focused on a specific genre and making the genre interesting to all types of personalities, although Fox are bigger they have distributed more mainstream based movies. Another reason that I have for wanting to choose this media production is the fact that it is a smaller based company makes it cheaper for me to get them to produce my film.

INFORMATION PROFILE: LIONSGATE

Lionsgate is a Canadian entertainment company and they were founded in 1986. Lionsgate are an international company which have produced and distributed films for years and they are a very well known company. Lionsgate are very well known for their horror/thriller genre films.

They have distributed films such as

Saw

The last house in the woods

Alone in the house

The last exorcism

My bloody valentine

They are very well known for creating horror, drama and thriller this is a very positive thing, as our film is in the horror genre. However, because they are such a large company it would be very expensive to get this company to distribute our film. I do not think that this company would be as suitable as Hammer productions would. The order for my choice would be Hammer 1 st, Lionsgate 2nd and 20th Century fox 3rd.

The reasons I am choosing Hammer are:

• All films distributed by them are horror.

• They are UK based

• Smaller than the others, so they are cheaper

• Although they are known for their gothic horrors, they have had successes in psychological horrors too

• Our film will help them with having more successes in psychological horrors

• Our type of film will stand out over their other films
