STATEMENT OF INTENT

GENRE

I decided the genre of my music magazine whilst annotating the three magazines with their

double page spread and content. I decided I wanted the genre of my magazine to be musical

theatre. Musical theatre is a niche market because only a small percentage of the population

like this kind of genre. I also thought of doing musical theatre because no one else would pick

this because everyone would use mainstream music for their genres for their magazines. There

is only a bit of publicity for this genre at certain points around the world, for example; New York

(Broadway) and England (West End) even though musical theatre is growing in many other

countries around the world, this is why musical theatre is still in the niche market. This allows

me to focus purely on this genre in my questionnaire. This allows me to explore the different

conventions and sub-conventions of the musical theatre genre. It also allows me to explore how

far musical theatre has come since it started in 1866, there are not many magazines on this

topic for sale, but I can look at the design of the posters of musicals and the magazines out their

to get a feel for my presentation.

TARGET AUDIENCE

I have a lot of knowledge of the target audience for musical theatre,

musical theatre has a wide age range for it’s audience. With that in mind I

am going to only focus my target audience on people aged 13 to 24. This

allows me to focus on the target audience and their needs for my magazine.

It will be easy to know what content my audience wants to see in the

magazine since they are all students and are at similar ages, so they might

like similar musicals. The target audience is going to be mainly females

because more females are interested in theatre than males. Looking at

that, I have to cater for both genders in my magazine, so my magazine has

to appeal both genders without being bias to the female gender since they

will mainly read my magazine. The magazine will be for the niche market.
