Leiden is geen grote metropool en heeft evenmin een reusachtig, multifunctioneel congrescen-trum binnen haar stadsgrenzen. Toch biedt deze bijzondere stad volop mogelijkheden als locatie voor middelgrote en zelfs grote congressen. Burgemeester Henri Lenferink legt uit hoe dat kan: ‘Het is een tijdlang in de mode geweest om een congres op een plek te huisvesten: zalen en accommodaties onder één dak. Dat hebben we niet in Leiden, maar er zijn wel veel ruimtes beschikbaar in onze stad, groot en middelgroot, en vaak op loop-afstand van elkaar. Bovendien hebben we prachtige accommoda-ties om te overnachten. Door deze voorzieningen gezamenlijk aan te bieden, is er erg veel mogelijk.’

Voordelen voor congresgangersOm ook als congresstad als een eenheid naar buiten te komen, wordt er van de verschillende partijen wel wat gevraagd. ‘Veel accommodaties hebben primair een ander doel: het zijn bijvoor-

beeld collegezalen, kerkzalen of ruimtes die bij musea horen. Als het om de accommodaties gaat, zijn sommige partijen in andere situaties elkaars concurrenten en dat kan even lastig zijn. Maar uiteindelijk wordt ieder-een er beter van. Ook van de congresorganisatoren wordt iets meer gevraagd; denk maar aan bijvoorbeeld transport en catering. Toch biedt het totaalpakket veel voordelen voor de congresgangers. Ze komen terecht in sfeervolle en vaak historische zalen, stijlkamers en accommodaties. Bovendien zijn in Leiden veel mogelijkheden en bezienswaardigheden buiten de congrestijden.’

Duizenden monumentenDe burgemeester is er trots op wat zijn stad te bieden heeft. Naast kennisstad, met de universiteit en het Bio Science Park, is Leiden ook een museumstad, met een aantal grote, maar ook diverse kleinere musea die het bezoeken waard zijn. Als het gaat om het neerzetten van Leiden als congresstad, zijn er volgens burgemeester Henri Lenferink veel mogelijkheden. ‘Door een nauwe samenwerking tussen de verschillende faciliteiten en accommodaties hebben we op het gebied van congressen veel bijzonders te bieden’, is zijn stellige mening.

For Leiden as a conference city, the possibilities are unlimited, according to mayor Henri Lenferink: ‘With the close cooperation between the different providers of facilities and accommodation, we have a lot of unique possibilities for conferences.’

Leiden is by no means a huge metropolis and has no enormous multifunctional conference cen-tres. Yet this special city has a wealth of possibilities as a loca-tion for medium-sized and even large conferences. Mayor Henri

Lenferink explains how this is pos-sible: ‘It used to be fashionable to hold a conference with everything on one location: meeting rooms and bedrooms all under one roof. That’s something we don’t have in Leiden, but there are a great many unusual and interesting facilities available here, large and medium-sized, and all within walking distance of one another. And we also have a wide range of options for overnight stays. When you put these different facilities together, the possibilities are endless.’

Advantages for conference visitorsAs a conference city, positioning ourselves as a single entity asks a lot of the different parties involved. ‘Many of the accommodation venues have a quite different primary function: they may be lecture halls, or part of a church or museum. In terms of accom-modation, some parties might be competition for one another in different circumstances, which can be tricky. But in the end, the aim is for everyone to benefit. There’s

also a lot of pressure on confe-rence organisers; just consider the transport and catering arrange-ments, for instance. Nevertheless, the total package offers many advantages for conference visitors. They get to spend time in stylish and historic locations, often in period rooms, each with its own special ambience. And outside conference hours they can enjoy Leiden’s many attractions.’

Thousands of monumentsThe Mayor is proud of what his city has to offer. As well as being a knowledge city, with its university and Bio Science Park, Leiden is also a museum city, with a wide selection of museums large and small - all well worth a visit. Leiden is also a city of historic monuments; there are no less than 3,000 to visit in the city. And then there are the many restaurants and cafés, stylish shops, picturesque canals, theatres, cinemas, impo-sing churches and beauty spots such as the charming almshouses and the oases of peace that can be found in the city. ‘Visitors are always surprised to discover that Leiden has so much to offer. You’re not likely to run out of things to do here,’ comments Mayor Lenferink with a certain degree of well-deserved pride.

Leidens OntzetVanaf de zestiende eeuw keerde het economisch tij. Het was de tijd van de Hervorming en protestantse stromingen werden fel vervolgd. Leiden sloot zich in 1572 aan bij de Nederlandse opstand tegen de Spaanse overheersing en werd door de Spanjaarden belegerd. De inwoners vielen ten prooi aan ziekte en honger en bijna was Leiden in handen gevallen van

de Spanjaarden, maar op 3 oktober 1574 vluchtten de Spaanse troepen en trokken de troepen van Willem van Oranje Leiden binnen. Zij deelden voedsel uit: een half brood met kaas en haring voor iedere inwoner. Deze bevrijding, Leidens Ontzet, wordt tot op de dag van vandaag gevierd met een gigantisch volksfeest. Als dank voor het heldhaftige verzet dat de stad tijdens het beleg

bood, stichtte Willem van Oranje op 8 februari 1575 de Universiteit Leiden.

De Leidse sleutelsLeiden is de Sleutelstad. Overal in de stad

duiken de sleutels weer op. Dat is al zo sinds 1293, toen op de officiële

documenten van de ‘stadt Leyde’ steeds vaker een stadszegel sierde

met Petrus daarop. In zijn hand draagt de apostel een sleutel. De combinatie tussen Petrus en

een sleutel is een bekende.

De geschiedenis van Leiden gaat ver terug; al ver voor onze jaartelling woonden mensen aan de oevers van de Rijn. Omstreeks 1200 had de nederzetting zich zodanig ontwikkeld dat de graaf van Holland de inwoners stadsrechten gaf; de stad Leiden was

geboren. Aan het eind van de vijftiende eeuw was Leiden de grootste stad van het graafschap Holland. Dit was voor een groot deel te danken aan de internationale lakenindustrie. De voorspoed die Leiden in die tijd doormaakte, weerspiegelt zich in bouwwerken als de Hooglandse Kerk en de Pieterskerk.

The Relief of LeidenIn the sixteenth century, the economic tide turned. It was the era of the Reformation, when Protestant movements were fiercely persecuted. In 1572, Leiden joined the Dutch revolt (led by the Prince of Orange) against the Spanish invaders, and the city was beseiged by the

Rembrandt van RijnRembrandt van Rijn werd op 15 juli 1606 geboren in de Weddesteeg in Leiden en woonde er de eerste 26 jaar van zijn leven. Dat waren belangrijke jaren. Hij leerde op de Latijnse school de klassieken en besloot vervolgens schilder te worden. Eenmaal volleerd vestigde hij zich in Leiden als zelfstandig schilder. In zijn Leidse atelier is menig meesterwerk ontstaan. In Museum De Lakenhal hangt een schilderij uit de Leidse periode van de schilder.

Spanish. The citizens fell prey to disease and hunger, and Leiden almost fell into the hands of the Spanish, but on 3 October 1574 the Spanish invaders fled and the troops of the Prince of Orange entered the city. They distributed food to the starving citizens: half a loaf of bread with cheese and herring for every person. This liberation, the Relief of Leiden, is still celebrated every year, right up to the present day, with a gigantic local party. As a reward for the city’s resistance during the Spanish occupation, William of Orange founded Leiden University on 8 February 1575.

The keys to LeidenLeiden is the City of Keys; the motif of keys can be seen all over the city. This dates back to

Leiden’s history stretches back a long way; long before our calendar started, people had settled on the banks of the Rhine. By 1200 the settlement had grown to such a size that the Count of Holland gave the people city rights, heralding the birth of the city of Leiden. At the end of the fifteenth century, Leiden was the biggest city in the county of Holland, mainly due to the international cloth industry for which the city was famous. The prosperity enjoyed by Leiden in this period is reflected in such imposing buildings as the Hooglandse kerk and the Pieterskerk.

1293 when a city seal depicting Saint Peter featured on official documents of the ‘stadt Leyde’. In his hand the apostle carries a key. The combination of Saint Peter and a key is a well-known symbol taken from the Bible (Matthew, 16, v. 19), when Jesus says to Peter: ‘I will give you the keys to the City of Heaven.’ As early as 1121 the Counts of Holland had a chapel built, dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. This is the present Pieterskerk.

Rembrandt van RijnRembrandt van Rijn was born on 15 July 1606 in the Weddesteeg in Leiden, where he lived for the first 26 years of his life. These were important years for him. He studied classics at the Latin school, then decided to become a painter. Having trained under Jacob Isaacsz Swanenburg, Rembrandt set himself up in Leiden as an independent artist. Many of his masterpieces were painted in his Leiden studio. A painting from his Leiden period can be seen in the Museum De Lakenhal.

Het Leidengevoel. Fractievoorzitter D66 Alexander Pechtold kan er over meepraten. Hij kent de stad als student, inwoner, bestuurder, congresganger en tegenwoordig weer als bezoeker. ‘Ik kom er nog vaak. Ik heb er nog steeds mijn kapper, laat er mijn horloge maken en woon er graag een concert bij. Toen ik nog in Leiden woonde, ging ik op zaterdagochtend vaak met mijn vrouw het centrum in. Even naar de markt, koffiedrinken, een tentoonstelling bekijken. Het is allemaal zo overzichtelijk, aan de andere kant is het ook echt een stad. Het valt me op dat weinig mensen de stad echt kennen. Leiden is niet alleen leuk voor buitenlanders, ook voor Nederlan-ders is een bezoek aan Leiden de moeite waard. De stad heeft veel juweeltjes die eigenlijk nog maar door weinigen ontdekt zijn.’

Geen blufHoe komt dat? ‘Leidenaren zijn trots op hun stad, maar ze hebben dat nooit zo sterk uitgedragen. Ze hebben niet de bluf van Amsterdammers of Rotterdammers. Dat zie je ook terug in de hofjes; Leiden heeft er maar liefst 35. Misschien vormt de beslotenheid van die hofjes een mooie symboliek voor Leiden. Authentiek, maar enigszins introvert. Je moet wel het lef hebben om die deur open te duwen.’ De onaangetaste schoonheid van Leiden heeft volgens Pechtold ook te maken met het geldgebrek waarmee de stad in de jaren vijftig kampte. ‘In de periode waarin andere steden grote herstructureringen doorvoerden, was de stad te arm. In Leiden moesten ze een pand wel schilderen, er was geen

geld om het af te breken. Dat is natuurlijk wel het behoud geweest.’

UniekHet SieboldHuis, de Hortus botanicus, de Leidse hofjes, de Stadsgehoorzaal, vier rijksmusea, met de kinderen naar Naturalis en Molenmuseum De Valk en – Pechtolds persoonlijke favoriet - het zicht vanuit de Herensteeg op de Pieterskerk; het veelzijdige aanbod op loopafstand maakt Leiden de moeite waard. Voor toeristen, maar ook voor congresgangers. ‘Leiden is een unieke locatie. Zeker voor niet al te grootschalige congressen

waarbij het programma ruimte biedt om tussen de bedrijven door nog iets anders te doen. Het ligt op 20 minuten van Schiphol, er zijn tegen-woordig kwalitatief goede hotels en het is er veilig. Vooral buitenlanders vinden dat een issue. Maar om Leiden te ontdekken, moet je het echt zelf zien. ‘Ik weet nog precies hoe ik op mijn 18de jaar vanuit het station Leiden binnenliep om me in te schrijven op het Rapenburg. Het was liefde op het eerste gezicht, en dat is het altijd gebleven.’ Het gezin Pechtold woont sinds 2003 in Wageningen. Is er kans op terugkeer naar Leiden? ‘Dat sluit ik zeker niet uit. In Leiden raak je nooit uitgekeken.’

D66-voorman Alexander Pechtold heeft heel wat voetstappen in Leiden liggen. Het is de stad waar hij studeerde en zijn politieke loopbaan begon. Als kunstkenner en voormalig wethouder weet hij wat de stad te bieden heeft: ‘Je struikelt hier over de monumenten, daarnaast is Leiden ook gewoon een stad waar je lekker kunt rondslenteren.’

Drs. Alexander Pechtold (1965) is politiek leider van D66. Hij is geboren in Delft, groeide op in Emmen en Rhoon, woont in Wageningen en werkt in Den Haag. Toch voelt zich nog altijd zeer verbonden met Leiden; de stad waar hij kunstgeschiedenis en archeologie studeerde en zijn politieke carrière begon. Voordat Pechtold in 1992 veilingmeester bij Van Stockum’s Veilingen in Den Haag werd, was hij al actief voor de D66-fractie in de Leidse gemeenteraad. Vanaf 1990 als assistent van de D66-fractie in Leiden, vanaf 1994 als lid van de gemeenteraad. In 1997 werd hij daar wethouder van Sport, Cultuur, Recreatie en Monumenten, gevolgd door de portefeuilles Grote Stedenbeleid, Onderwijs en Verkeer en Vervoer. In 2002 werd hij partijvoorzitter van D66, in 2003 burgemeester van Wageningen, in 2005 maakte hij zijn entree naar de landelijke politiek. Met succes, sinds zijn aantreden als fractievoorzitter van D66 maakt de partij een enorme groei door. ‘Om Leiden te ontdekken, moet je het zelf zien.’

D66 leader Alexander Pechtold is no stranger to Leiden. It’s the city where he studied and where he started his political career. As an art connoisseur and former local councillor, he knows just what Leiden has to offer: ‘Wherever you go, you come across historic monu-ments, but Leiden is also a city for a leisurely stroll.’

That Leiden feeling. D66 par-liamentary chairman Alexander Pechtold knows it well. In fact, he knows the city like the back of his hand: he has studied here, lived here, worked here for the local council and attended conferences here, and currently he comes here as a visitor. ‘I’m often in Leiden. My hairdresser is here; I come here to have my watch mended and I love coming to concerts here. When we lived in Leiden, my wife and I used to come into the centre on Saturday mornings, to shop at the market, for coffee or for an exhibition. It’s all so compact, yet at the same time it’s very much a city. What strikes me is that so few people really know Leiden. It’s a

city that’s not only interesting for foreign visitors, but it’s also well worth a visit for Dutch people, too. It has an enormous number of treasures that only a few visitors ever discover.’

Not so brashHow does he account for that? ‘The people of Leiden are proud of their city, but they’ve never really boasted about it. They don’t have the brashness of Amsterdam or Rotterdam. You can see it in the almshouses; Leiden has no less than 35 of these secluded courtyards. Maybe this seclusion is a kind of symbol for Leiden: authentic, but a bit introvert. It can take a lot of courage to open the door to the outside world.’ Pechtold also puts Leiden’s unspoilt beauty down to the lack of money that the city suffered in the fifties. ‘At the time when other cities were engaged in major restructuring operations, Leiden was too poor. There was simply no money to demolish the buildings, so they had to make

do with painting them. That was actually Leiden’s saving grace.’

UniqueSieboldHouse, the Hortus botanicus, Leiden’s almshouses, the Stadsgehoorzaal, four national museums, Naturalis for a visit with the children, the De Valk windmill museum and – Pechtolds personal favourite – the view of the Pieterskerk from the Herensteeg; it’s the enormous variety of at-tractions – and all within walking distance - that makes a visit to Leiden such a pleasure. Not only for tourists, but for conference visitors as well. ‘Leiden is a unique location; especially for the none-too-large conferences where the programme allows time for other activities.’ Leiden is just 20 minutes from Schiphol; it has some top class hotels and it’s a safe city. For international visitors in parti-cular that’s a big plus. But to really

get to know Leiden you have to see it for yourself. ‘I can remember the first

time I came here as if it were yes-terday. I was just 18, and I walked from the station to the Rapenburg to enrol at the University. It was love at first sight, and that feeling has never gone away.’ The Pechtold family has lived in Wageningen since 2003. Is it likely that they might return to Leiden? ‘I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. Leiden is a place you never tire of.’

D66 parliamentary chairman, Alexander Pechtold:

‘Leiden’s a place you never tire of’ Alexander Pechtold, M.A. (1965) is leader of the D66 political party. He was born in Delft, grew up in Emmen and Rhoon, lives in Wageningen and works in The Hague. But he still harbours very warm feelings for Leiden; it’s the city where he studied Art History and Archae-ology, and where his political career started. Before Pechtold became Auctioneer for Van Stockum Auction House in The Hague, he was already actively involved with the D66 party in Leiden’s municipal council, from 1990 as assistant to the D66 party in Leiden, and from 1994 as a member of the municipal council. In 1997 he was appointed Councillor for Sport, Culture, Recreation and Historic Monuments, later for Major City Policies, Education and Traffic and Transport. In 2002 he became D66 party chairman, in 2003 Mayor of Wageningen and in 2005 he entered national politics. Obviously to good effect: since he became party chairman, D66’s popularity has grown enormously.

Eén kenmerk van Leiden valt direct op, waar je ook bent: het water. Leiden heeft na Amsterdam het meeste water binnen haar poorten stromen. Door de ligging aan de rand van het Hollandse Plassengebied voeren verschillende doorvaarroutes voor plezier- en toervaart door Leiden en de omge-ving. Over de Oude Rijn en de Vliet

leiden schitterende vaarroutes van het ene plassengebied naar het andere, dwars door de historische binnenstad.

Leiden telt ruim 2700 monumen-ten. Van hofjes tot molens en van kerken tot stadspoorten. Eigenlijk is de hele binnenstad van Leiden één groot monument. Een wande-

ling of fietstocht langs de meest in het oog springende monumenten is dan ook absoluut de moeite waard! Er zijn maar liefst twaalf musea binnen handbereik, waarvan een aantal met een internationale topcollectie.

Wie door Leiden loopt, proeft de energie en sfeer die ontmoetingen

zo bijzonder kunnen maken. In de binnenstad, maar bijvoorbeeld ook in het Bio Science Park, waar het gonst van de vernieuwingen dankzij de samenwerking tussen bedrijven, gemeente en kennisinstellingen.

Drs. Meta Knol (1969) geldt als een van de voorvechters van museale vernieuwing. In 2007 publiceerde ze samen met ‘museumkopstukken’ Edwin Jacobs en Stijn Huijts het manifest ‘Naar een mondig museum’ in NRC Handelsblad, een pleidooi voor het anti-elitaire museum. Iets dat ze als directeur van Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden verder in praktijk wil brengen. Voor haar benoeming in augustus 2009 werkte ze 12 jaar als conservator moderne en hedendaagse kunst bij het Centraal Museum in Utrecht.In diezelfde stad studeerde ze kunstgeschiedenis met bijvakken als filosofie, film- en theaterwetenschappen en musicologie.

Het museum als plek waar kunst maar voor één uitleg vatbaar is: de kunsthistorische uitleg. Volgens Meta Knol is dat niet meer van deze tijd: ‘Je ziet op allerlei terreinen dat mensen mondiger worden en anders met informatie omgaan. Mensen organiseren zichzelf via internet en creëren naar het Wikipediamodel informatie met elkaar. In De Lakenhal wil ik de interactie met het publiek handen en voeten geven.’ De kersverse museumdirecteur maakte een droomstart. December 2009, drie maanden na haar benoeming, besloot de gemeenteraad 15,3 miljoen euro in De Lakenhal te investeren. Knol: ‘De renovatie van De Lakenhal staat gepland voor 2013 – 2014. Tot die tijd staat er ook nog het nodige op de agenda.’

Interactief projectIn 2010 brengt De Lakenhal het project Werk in Uitvoering. Het museum heeft zo’n 25.000 werken in depot die in een wekelijks wisselende tentoonstelling aan het publiek worden getoond. Daarbij mogen bezoekers zelf ook hun schatten

komen laten zien. Knol: ‘Veel mensen verzamelen wel iets. Particuliere verzamelaars worden uitgenodigd om zich met hun meest geliefde object in het museum te laten portretteren. Die foto’s hangen we op. De interactie met het publiek werkt ontzettend goed. Het thema voor 2011 wordt de Renaissance, te beginnen met een tentoonstelling van de man die de Renaissance naar de Noordelijke Nederlanden haalde, Lucas van Leyden en tijdgenoten. In de tweede helft van 2011 besteden we aandacht aan het Leidens beleg en ontzet. De mythes en de werkelijkheid rondom 3 oktober. De Stadsgehoorzaal brengt muziek uit die periode. Ook andere culturele instellingen doen mee.’

IJzersterkDe onderlinge samenwerking tus-sen de Leidse musea en culturele instellingen is volgens Knol uniek in Nederland: ‘De Museumgroep, het samenwerkingsverband van de grote Leidse musea, is een ijzersterk concept. Je kunt elkaar als concurrenten zien, maar het is veel zinvoller om samen te werken. Eigenlijk is Leiden één groot museum. Overal is de geschiedenis voelbaar, tegelijker-tijd is Leiden ook een stad waar veel nieuwe dingen gebeuren. Of je hier nu komt als toerist of con-gresganger: je kunt hier altijd iets bijzonders beleven.’ Ondanks het rijke kunst- en cultuuraanbod kan de kunsthistorica zonder aarzelen haar favoriete plek in Leiden noe-men: ‘De Lakenhal natuurlijk.’

Tijden veranderen, mensen veranderen. Dat vraagt ook om een andere presentatie van het kunst- en cultuuraanbod. Niet alle Nederlandse musea lopen even hard van stapel met die vernieuwing. Directeur Meta Knol van Museum de Lakenhal geeft graag het goede voorbeeld.

Drs. Meta Knol (1969) geldt als één van de voorvechters van museale vernieuwing. In 2007 publiceerde ze samen met ‘museumkopstukken’ Edwin Jacobs en Stijn Huijts het manifest ‘Naar een mondig museum’ in NRC Handelsblad, een pleidooi voor het anti-elitaire museum. Iets dat ze als directeur van Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden verder in praktijk wil brengen. Museums tend to be places where art is open to only one interpretation: the art historical approach. Meta Knol believes this attitude is outdated: ‘You see people becoming more capable and self-assured and handling information differently. People today can use the internet to get organised, and Wikipedia means they are able to share information with one another. My aim with De Lakenhal is to make our interaction with the public into something tangible.’

The brand-new museum director had a start most people could only dream of. In December 2009, three months after her appointment, the municipal council agreed to invest 15.3 million euro in De Lakenhal. Knol: ‘The renovations are planned to take place between 2013 and 2014. Until then we have a full programme.’

Interactive projectIn 2010, De Lakenhal’s main theme will be Work in Progress. The museum has around 25,000 works in its depot that will be ex-hibited to the public in a weekly-changing exhibition. Visitors will also be invited to bring their treasures to exhibit. Knol: ‘Lots of people collect things. Private collectors will be invited to have their portrait made in the museum with their most prized posses-sion. Then we’ll put the photos on display in the museum. This kind of interaction with the public works really well. The theme for 2011 will be the Renaissance, starting with the man who brought the Renaissance to the Northern Netherlands, Lucas van Leyden, and his contemporaries. In the second half of 2011 we’ll focus on the seige and relief of Leiden: the myths and realities that surround 3 October. De Stadsgehoorzaal will present

music from that period, and other cultural institutions will also be taking part.’

Cast-iron conceptThe collaboration between Leiden’s museums and cultural institutions is, in Knol’s opinion, unique in the Netherlands: ‘The Museum Group, the partnership between Leiden’s major museums, is a cast-iron concept. You can regard one another as rivals, but it’s much more useful to work together. In fact, Leiden is one big museum. Leiden’s history can be felt everywhere in the city, yet at the same time it is a place where many new things are happening. Whether you come as a tourist or a conference guest, you can be sure your visit will be special.’ When asked to name her favourite spot in Leiden, given the city’s wealth of art and culture, Knol, without a moment’s hesitation, replies: ‘De Lakenhal, of course.’

In 2001, together with ‘museum experts’ Edwin Jacobs and Stijn Huijts, she published the ‘Naar een mondig museum’ manifesto in Dutch national newspaper NRC Handelsblad.This is basically a plea for museums to become more anti-elitist - something that she as Director of Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden intends to put into practice. Before her appointment in August 2009, she had worked for 12 years as curator of modern and contemporary art at the Central Museum in Utrecht. She studied art history in the same city, taking minors in philosophy, film and theatre studies, and musicology.

Academisch Historisch MuseumAcademic Historical Museum

De BurchtHet hart van Leiden wordt ge-vormd door de Burcht. De Burcht van Leiden is één van de oudste nog bestaande voorbeelden van een mottekasteel in Nederland. Het is een kunstmatig opgeworpen heuvel (motte) met (aanvankelijk) een houten burcht. In 1203 is hier gevochten om het graafschap van Holland. De Burcht is vrij toegankelijk en als u de steile trap heeft weten te bedwingen wacht een prachtig uitzicht over Leiden als beloning.

Het GravensteenAls gebouwen konden spreken, zou het Gravensteen de geschiedenis van Leiden vanaf het begin van de dertiende eeuw kunnen vertel-len. Het was een versterkte toren die hoorde bij de grafelijke hoeve ter plekke, maar het was ook een gevangenis, een tuchthuis, een boekenopslag en een universiteits-gebouw. Omdat het gebouw in de vroege middeleeuwen uit steen werd opgetrokken – in die tijd vrij ongebruikelijk – noemden de om-wonenden het Het Gravensteen. In de vijftiende eeuw werd het de offi-ciële stadsgevangenis. Gevangenen werden hardhandig aangepakt: de martelkamer stond bekend als één van de meest effectieve in de wijde omtrek. De laatste doodstraf werd in 1853 voltrokken. Nu doet het pand dienst als universiteitsgebouw.

Hooglandse KerkVlakbij de Burcht staat de Hooglandse Kerk, een imposante laatgotische kruisbasiliek in het hart van Leiden. De Hooglandse Kerk is zonder twijfel één van de mooiste en meest imponerende kerken van Leiden. Opvallend is het lijnenspel van de gotiek en de enorme ramen geven een uitbundig overweldigend licht in de grote ruimte. De kerk wordt geroemd om zijn elegantie. Het vensteroppervlak is het grootste in Nederland. Het brede dwarsschip is met zijn 65,70 meter het breedste gotische dwarsschip ter wereld en geeft een beeld van de geplande opzet van een immense kerk, die zich na voltooiing zou kunnen meten met de grootste gotische kathedralen van Europa.

Leiden telt ruim 2700 monumenten en een groot aantal daarvan is toegankelijk. Sint Anna AalmoeshuisDit hofje is een van de oudste hof-jes van Leiden. Het werd gesticht in 1492 voor ‘dertien arme vrou-kens van guede faem ende naem’. Uniek is de kleine kapel voor de bewoners – de enige die nog bewaard is gebleven in een Leids hofje – die in 1509 gewijd werd. De kapel heeft een bijzondere en rijke inventaris en de vensters bevatten het oudste gebrandschil-derd glas van Nederland. Mogelijk heeft de verborgen ligging de kapel in 1566 behoed voor de beeldenstormers. Een groot deel van de middeleeuwse inventaris bleef ongeschonden.

The CitadelThe Citadel stands at the heart of the city, and is one of the oldest remaining examples of a motte fortress in the Netherlands. It comprises a man-made mound (a motte), originally with a wooden fortress. In 1203 this is where the struggle for the county of Holland was fought. The Citadel is open to the public, and if you’re prepared to negotiate the steep stairs, you will be rewarded with a breathta-king view over Leiden.

The GravensteenIf buildings could speak, the Gravensteen would recount the history of Leiden from the start of the thirteenth century. It was a reinforced tower that belonged to the local estate of the Count, but it has also been a prison, a house of reform, a book repository and a university building. It was built in the early Middle Ages and was constructed of stone – which was unusual at the time - it was christened the Gravensteen, or Count’s stone, by the local people. In the fifteenth century it became the official city prison. Prisoners were treated cruelly: the torture chamber was known as one of the most effective in the region. The last execution was carried out in

1853. The building is now in use by the University.

Hooglandse KerkNot far from the Citadel you will find the Hooglandse Kerk, an imposing late Gothic cruciform church in the heart of Leiden. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful and imposing of Leiden’s churches. The remarkable Gothic lines and the enormous windows bathe the massive interior space with an overwhelming light. The church is renowned for its elegan-ce and has the largest expanse of windows in the Netherlands. The transept at 65.7 metres wide is the broadest Gothic transept in the world and gives a clear impression

of just how immense the com-pleted structure would have been. It was planned to rival the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe.

Sint Anna AlmshouseThis is one of the oldest almshou-ses in Leiden, and was founded in 1492 for ‘thirteen poor women of good fame and name.’ A unique feature of this courtyard is the small chapel consecrated in 1509 that was intended for use by the inhabitants. This chapel, the only one still remaining in Leiden’s almshouses, has an unusual and rich inventory, and its windows hold the oldest leaded glass in the Netherlands. The chapel’s secluded location may be what saved it from destruction in 1566 when iconoclasts destroyed many of the religious buildings in the Netherlands. Fortunately, much of the chapel’s medieval inventory remained intact.

Leiden molenstadLeiden heeft negen molens binnen haar gemeente. Hiermee kan Leiden oprecht ‘molenstad’ genoemd worden. Ook de verscheidenheid in type en functie is bijzonder. Zo telt Leiden twee korenmolens, twee houtzaagmolens en vijf poldermolens. Op één polder-molen na, de Rodenburgermolen, zijn alle molens in werking. In Molenmuseum De Valk kunt u zien, lezen en horen over de techniek, geschiedenis, ambacht en leven van de Hollandse molenaar van toen.

Ontdek Leiden vanaf het waterLeiden heeft, na Amsterdam, het meeste water binnen haar poorten stromen. De historische binnenstad van Leiden heeft in totaal 28 kilometer aan grachten en singels. Om over al die grachten en singels te komen heb je bruggen nodig. De Leidse binnenstad telt er maar liefst 88! Leiden laat zich vanaf het water goed bekijken. Leiden, city of windmillsLeiden has more than nine windmills within its borders, which earns it the name of ‘city of windmills’. Leiden’s windmills are also very diverse, both in type and purpose. There are two grain mills, two saw mills and

‘Er zijn veel plaatsen in de wereld waar men “Leiden” kan uitspreken’, zegt Van der Heijden tijdens het gesprek tevreden. Dat feit heeft niet zozeer te maken met de verrassend veel toeristische attracties die de stad te bieden heeft, maar vooral met de aanwezigheid van de Universiteit Leiden. De universiteit heeft zich in de afgelopen eeuwen ontwikkeld tot een van de beste van Europa. Er zijn in Leiden ontelbare wetenschappers opgeleid, die in sommige gevallen wereldwijd bekend zijn geworden.

Stad als campusDe Universiteit Leiden, en daar-mee Leiden, staat stevig op de kaart. Het is dus niet verwonder-lijk dat Paul van der Heijden met onverholen trots over “zijn” uni-versiteit spreekt. ‘Het is natuurlijk niet mijn universiteit. Het gebeurt allemaal op onze zes faculteiten. Daar wordt het onderwijs gegeven, op verschillende plaatsen in de stad. Daar zitten de docenten, de onderzoekers en de studenten. De stad is onze campus, zeggen wij altijd. Ik en mijn medebe-stuurders zijn verantwoordelijk voor de strategie van de universi-teit als geheel, de communicatie, de financiën, de werving van nieuwe studenten en het beheer van onze gebouwen – en dat zijn er nogal wat.’

Het is precies 435 jaar geleden dat Willem van Oranje de universiteit in Leiden oprichtte, als gift aan de bevolking. Anno 2010 staat de Universiteit Leiden wereldwijd hoog aangeschreven. That’s where our lecturers, researchers and students are, and it’s where our programmes are taught, at

My colleagues and I on the Board are responsible for the strategy of the university as a whole, communications, finances, recruiting new students, and managing our buildings – and there are a lot of them.’

Co-operationIt’s wonderful that Leiden University has such an excellent worldwide reputation, according to Van der Heijden. But, he adds: ‘For us the main thing is to communicate with the outside world about what we as a university are doing. Our biggest source of income is tax revenues, so we have to be accountable to the tax payers and show them what we stand for. We intend to be an integral part of society and to make a valuable contribution to the community.’ An example

The Hooglandse Kerk can be reserved for commercial events – apart from on Sundays and holidays. The building has a total floor area of 2,800 m2. By positioning a range of large screens, it can be divided into two separate areas. So your party never needs to feel ‘lost’ in a space that is just too big.

The Hooglandse House on the choir side of the church has a suite of well-equipped meeting rooms. Both the house and the church offer every opportunity for making your event a success.

The halls of the CORPUS Congress Centre have high ceilings, spacious lay-out, and an industrial character. The seven-metre-high congress hall measuring 661 square metres is well-suited for plenary meetings, accommodating a maximum of 540 persons. All guests have excellent view to the 30 metre square stage. The room can be completely darkened and also be transformed to a room with daylight in no time. The hall can also be reduced to a space with a capacity for 330 persons. The breakout rooms consist of four smaller spaces that can be linked or separated.

De succesvolle en sympathieke Armin van Buuren heeft ‘zo’n beetje alles met Leiden: ik ben er geboren, heb er op school gezeten en aan de universiteit mijn studie rechten afgerond. Bart van Mossel voelt zich de bewaarder van een rijk gevulde schatkamer. Als directeur van de Leidse Schouwburg werkt hij voor het oudste en mooiste theater van Nederland: ‘Veel mensen hebben een voorliefde voor dit sfeervolle theater. Niet alleen bezoekers, ook artiesten. Youp van ’t Hek treedt hier graag op, de Leidse cabare-tier Jochem Myjer noemt het zijn huis.’ Daarnaast is Van Mossel tevens algemeen en artistiek direc-teur van de onlangs gerenoveerde Stadsgehoorzaal. ‘De akoestiek is fenomenaal. Zelfs musici van wereldklasse zoals Ton Koopman en Yo-Yo Ma zijn onder de indruk van de akoestische kwaliteiten. Ook de nieuwe Aalmarktzaal heeft een goddelijke akoestiek; die wordt door kenners vergeleken met Wigmore Hall in Londen. De monumentale Waag uit 1659 is de locatie voor oude muziek en thee-concerten. De drie concertzalen en het theater vullen elkaar geweldig aan in mogelijkheden.’

Eén organisatieVanaf 1 januari 2011 vallen de Leidse Schouwburg en de Stads-gehoorzaal onder één paraplu. Dat betekent ook één telefoonnum-mer, één programmaboekje en de centrale coördinatie van ticketver-koop, marketing en zaalverhuur. Van Mossel ziet de fusie vol vertrouwen tegemoet: ‘We kunnen straks veel slagvaardiger opereren. Het programma-aanbod kan beter op elkaar afgestemd worden, ook prospects die een zaal willen huren kunnen we beter bedienen. Als de ene zaal bezet is, kun je direct een andere zaal voorstellen en reserveren. Alle medewerkers hebben er zin in. Iedereen werkt keihard en is supergemotiveerd. Het is natuurlijk ook een fantas-tisch product.’

Veelzijdig aanbodHet enthousiasme van Bart van Mossel reikt verder dan zijn eigen zalen. De centrale ligging en het veelzijdige kunst- en cultuuraan-

bod op loopafstand zijn volgens Van Mossel de kracht van Leiden: ‘Er is hier zoveel te zien en te ont-dekken, allemaal op loopafstand. Voor mensen van buiten - toeristen en congresgangers - heeft Leiden een heel goed functionerend parkeersysteem met shuttlebus-jes.’ Een ander pluspunt van Leiden vindt hij de bereidheid tot samenwerking tussen de diverse culturele instellingen: ‘We hebben allemaal de intentie om de stad naar een nog hoger plan te tillen. Er gaat hier nog veel moois gebeuren.’ Toerist of congres-ganger, welke plek mag bij een bezoek aan Leiden niet worden overgeslagen? ‘De Hooglandse Kerkgracht, een gedempte gracht met prachtige monumentale panden en een dubbele bomenrij. Een piekervaring, alsof je in een andere eeuw terecht komt. Dat kan in deze stad.’

Met drie concertzalen en een theater in hartje Leiden heeft directeur Bart van Mossel heel wat te bieden. De aanstaande fusie tussen de Stadsgehoorzaal en de Leidse Schouwburg levert nog meer mogelijkheden op: ‘We kunnen dan veel slagvaardiger opereren. Marketing, ticketverkoop, programma-aanbod en zaalverhuur voor congressen kan veel beter op elkaar worden afgestemd.’

Drs. Bart van Mossel (1955) staat bekend om zijn goede neus voor artistieke keuzes en zakelijk ondernemerschap. Hij heeft zijn sporen verdiend als programmeur en marketeer bij de Utrechtse Blauwe Zaal, De Meervaart in Amsterdam en het Chassé Theater in Breda. Vanaf 1998 is hij directeur van de Leidse Schouwburg, sinds juli 2009 is hij tevens algemeen en artistiek directeur van de Stadsgehoorzaal bestaande uit de prachtig gerenoveerde Grote Zaal met 824 stoelen, de nieuw gebouwde aangrenzende Aalmarktzaal met 350 stoelen en – op een paar minuten lopen - de historische Waag met 200 zitplaatsen. Vanaf januari 2011 zullen de Stadsgehoorzaal en de Leidse Schouwburg één organisatie vormen.

As Director of the Leiden Schouwburg, he works for the oldest and most beautiful theatre in the Netherlands. ‘Many people are charmed by this atmosphe-ric theatre, not just visitors, but artistes as well. Youp van ’t Hek loves performing here, and Leiden cabaret artiste Jochem Myjer calls it his home-from-home.’

Van Mossel is also General and Artistic Director of the recently renovated Stadsgehoorzaal. ‘The accoustics are phenomenal. Even world-class musicians like Ton Koopman and Yo-Yo Ma are impressed with the quality of the sound. And the accoustics of the new Aalmarkt hall are divine; it’s been compared by music connois-seurs to London’s Wigmore Hall.

The historic Weigh House, that dates from 1659, is where we hold ancient music and tea concerts. These three concert halls and the theatre are a perfect complement to one another.’

One organisationFrom 1 January 2011, the Leiden Schouwburg and the Stadsgehoor-zaal will fall under one umbrella. That means one telephone number, one programme, and one single organisation for ticket sales, mar-keting and room hire. It’s a merger that Van Mossel looks forward to with confidence. ‘It will allow us to operate much more efficiently. We can co-ordinate the programmes more effectively, and we can offer a better service to prospects who are interested in room hire. If one room is booked, you can always of-fer another alternative and you can

make a reservation straight away. All our staff are enthusiastic about the merger. Everyone is working flat out and is highly motivated. Don’t forget: what we have is a fantastic product.’

Varied rangeBart van Mossel’s enthusiasm stretches beyond his own theatres. He believes that Leiden’s central position and its varied artistic and cultural activities all within walking distance are the city’s strength: ‘There is so much to see and experience here, and it’s all within walking distance. For people from outside – tourists and conference visitors – Leiden has an efficient parking system with shuttle buses.’ Another advantage of Leiden is the willingness of the different cultural institutions to work together: ‘We all share the intention of raising the city to a higher level. Even more wonderful things are set to happen here.’ Which attraction are you not allowed to miss when visiting Leiden, whether you are a tourist or attending a conference? ‘The Hooglandse Kerkgracht, a filled-in canal with stunning monumental buildings and a double row of trees. An experience which takes back to another century. That’s possible in this city’!

Bart van Mossel, B.A. (1955) is known for his ability to make good artistic choices and also for his entrepreneurial skills. He earned his stripes as programme and marketing manager at the Blauwe Zaal in Utrecht, the Meervaart in Amsterdam and the Chassé Theater in Breda. He has been Director of the Leiden Schouw-burg since 1998, and in July 2009 he also became Artistic Director of the Stadsgehoor-zaal, comprising the beauti-fully renovated Grote Zaal with seating for 824, the adjoining and recently rebuilt Aalmarkt hall with seating for 350 and – just a few minutes walk away – the historic Weigh House that can seat an audi-ence of 200. From January 2011 the Stadsgehoorzaal and the Leiden Schouwburg will form a single organisation.

Gravensteen Het Gravensteen is een van de oudste en meest interessante gebouwen van Leiden. Eeuwenlang was het een gevangenis. De oudste kerker, rond 1200 gebruikt door de graven van Holland (die er indertijd direct naast woonden), is nog steeds te vinden in de voet van de robuuste vierkante toren in het midden van het complex.

SieboldHuis Het SieboldHuis biedt het mooiste uit het oude en nieuwe Japan in een Hollands huis met historische allure; prenten, lakwerk en keramiek, fossielen, herbaria, geprepareerde dieren, munten, kleding, oude landkaarten en honderden andere schatten zijn tussen 1823 en 1830 in Japan verzameld door de Beierse arts Philipp Franz von Siebold.

Academisch Historisch Museum Het Academisch Historisch Museum bestaat al meer dan vijfenzeventig jaar en bevindt zich in het Academiegebouw. De rijke geschiedenis van de Leidse universiteit wordt toegelicht aan de hand van historische ruimtes in het Academiegebouw, zoals

het Zweetkamertje en de Senaatskamer. 

Universiteitsbibliotheek Voor de Universiteit Leiden is een rijk voorziene bibliotheek altijd essentieel geweest. Vrijwel van begin af aan hebben bibliotheca-

rissen een assertief aankoopbeleid gevolgd, dat tot op de dag van vandaag wordt voortgezet. Hoog-leraren en particulieren, toen en nu, verrijken de bibliotheek met schenkingen.

Hortus botanicus De Hortus botanicus Leiden is het levende plantenmuseum en de groene schatkamer van de Universiteit Leiden. Sinds 1590 worden hier voor onderzoek en on-derwijs planten gekweekt uit alle windstreken van de aarde, maar vooral uit Azië.

Bibliotheca Thysiana De Bibliotheca Thysiana, bij testament gesticht door de jonge Leidse jurist Joannes Thysius (1622-1653), is de enige bibliotheek in Nederland uit de zeventiende eeuw die in zijn oorspronkelijk daarvoor gebouwde

behuizing bewaard is gebleven. De collectie omvat circa 2500 boeken en ettelijke duizenden pamfletten op alle gebieden van kennis uit de vijftiende, zestiende en zeventiende eeuw.

The Gravensteen is one of the ol-dest and most interesting buildings in Leiden. For centuries it was a prison. The oldest dungeon, used in around 1200 by the Counts of Holland (who lived in the adjacent building), can still be seen at the foot of the robust square tower in the centre of the complex.

SieboldHuis The SieboldHuis offers the best of ancient and modern Japan in a charming and historic Dutch house: prints, lacquer work and ceramics, fossils, herbaria, moun-ted animals, coins, clothing, old maps and hundreds of other trea-sures collected in Japan between 1823 and 1830 by German doctor Philipp Franz von Siebold.

Academic Historical Museum The Academic Historical Museum dates back more than seventy-five years and is located in the Academy Building. The Academy Building, originally constructed in the early sixteenth century as the convent church of an order of Dominican nuns, has been part of Leiden University since 1581. The rich history of the university is

displayed in the different historic rooms of the Academy Building, such as the Sudatorium and the Senate Room.

University Library Leiden University has always con-sidered it of essential importance to have a well-stocked library. Almost from the outset, librarians pursued an assertive acquisition policy, that has continued to the present day. Professors and private individuals, both in the past and the present, contribute

to enriching the library with their donations.

Hortus botanicus Leiden’s Hortus botanicus is the living plant museum and the green treasure house of Leiden Univer-sity. Since 1590, plants from all corners of the world - and in parti-cular from Asia - have been grown here for research and teaching.

Thysiana Library The Thysiana Library, bequeathed by Leiden scholar Joannes Thysius (1622-1653), is the only library in the Netherlands from the seventeenth century that is still preserved in its original building. The collection compri-ses some 2,500 books and many thousands of pamphlets covering all fields of knowledge dating from the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Comfortabel overnachtenDe compacte afmetingen van Leiden hebben het voor-deel dat alles te belopen is. Ideaal, maar hoe zit het met de hotelcapaciteit? Yvonne: ‘Leiden heeft veel verschillende hotels. Variërend van royale, luxe hotels aan de rand van het centrum tot aan sfeervolle familiehotels in

de binnenstad. Er is voldoende hotelcapaciteit voor kleine en mid-delgrote congressen. Bij grotere groepen worden vaak meerdere hotels ingeschakeld. Maar ook daar hebben organisatoren geen omkij-ken naar. Wij regelen het allemaal.’

Auto Met de auto is Leiden goed bereikbaar. Leiden is gelegen tus-sen de snelwegen A4 en A44. De binnenstad is weliswaar autoluw, maar tegelijk liggen in een cirkel rond het historische hart meer dan 3000 parkeerplaatsen voor bezoe-kers, verspreid over verschillende parkeergarages en grote en kleine parkeerterreinen.

Parkeerterrein Haagweg (tip)Het grootste parkeerterrein van Leiden ligt aan de Haagweg en functioneert als een volwaardig transferium. Zowel overdag als ‘s avonds rijden (gratis) pendel-busjes van het parkeerterrein naar alle plekken in het centrum en uiteraard ook weer terug. Openbaar vervoer Leiden is uitstekend te bereiken met het openbaar vervoer. Vanuit diverse

richtingen stoppen er treinen op station Leiden Centraal. Vanuit dit station loopt u zo de binnen-stad in. En de bussen rijden met een hoge frequentie naar vrijwel alle plekken in de stad.

Touringcarplekken Touringcars kunnen terecht op het parkeerter-rein Haagweg of op het parkeerter-rein bij Molen de Valk.
