MODE OF DOCUMENTARYo The mode of our documentary would be reflexive. This means the

filmmaker can acknowledge the presence in front of the camera. o Narrative guidance can be given by the documentarian.o Fits in to the documentary theme as we will be trying to educate

our target audience about vintage and classic cars.o This means this type of documentary will work better for us as we

are not observing or exposing anything so no other mode will fit with the chosen theme.

o There ill be more of an emphasis on the encounter between the filmmaker and the viewer instead of the filmmaker and the subject – therefore engages and interests the viewer.

o Reflexive documentaries tend to focus on realism and facts which is what we are trying to portray in our documentary about the subject of cars.

TARGET AUDIENCEo Main target audience will range from late teens to adults. However

mostly an older generation as more of an interest in the chosen topic.

o Again we will aim the documentary at both female and male however we believe males will be more likely to enjoy and take interest to this type of documentary.

o We will make sure we meet the target audiences needs by following the typical styles of documentary within this genre.

NARRATOR/ON-SCREEN DOCUMENTARIAN

o We have chosen to have an on-screen documentarian as we believe due to wanting to teach and educate our target audience we feel it will be easier to do this by having someone talking directly to them.

o Also this will be more engaging for our target audience and narrative guidance can be easily given through having an on screen documentarian.

CHANNEL MOST SUITABLE

o There are many similar documentaries that have been produced on television. They have been on a range of channels including channel 5, ITV and BBC.

o We believe the most suitable channel would be BBC as most of our target audience would be watching from this channel.

o As a group we decided that an evening time would suit us best to air the documentary as we would get the most viewers at this time – when people are home from work etc.

SIMILAR STYLES/DOCUMENTARIES

o There are thousands of similar documentaries in the fact that it will be reflexive as this is one of the most popular modes of documentaries.

o However, there are not a great deal of car documentaries out there the same as our idea as most are on the racing industry, for example ‘Senna’.

o Similar documentaries of out theme include: ‘Urban Outlaw’, ‘Love the Beast’, ‘364 Days’ and ‘Morris – a Minor Documentary’.

o We can gain ideas from these documentaries and make our documentary the best it can be by seeing the codes and conventions of a similar documentary.
