Opening hours• During weekThe Scottish print studios have similar opening times and late nights, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until 9pm with the exception of Highland Print Studio which opens until 9pm on a Thursday only.
The English studios have varied opening times and tend to be closed during lunch and dinner (for late night openings). The smaller studios, e.g. Artichoke, Inky Cuttlefish and John Howard don’t have late night openings, unless by appointment.
Spike Print Studio and Double Elephant Print Workshop have the longest opening times; keyholders of Spike have 24 hour access and full and visiting members of Double Elephant have access from 10am - 11pm Mon - Sat.Unusual - East London Printmakers have late night opening on a Thursday only; each day is split into sessions. Users may book more than 1 session on a Thursday but have to leave the studio during the periods between sessions.
6
Opening hours• WeekendsAgain the Scottish print studios have similar opening times on a Friday / Saturday; 10am - 6pm although Glasgow Print Studio shuts slightly earlier at 5.30pm.
The UK and international print studios opening times vary – some open morning only on a Saturday (John Howard Print Studio 9.30 am – 12.30pm); some afternoon only (Inky Cuttlefish 12.30pm – 5.30pm, Anchor Graphics 2pm – 5pm); and others open all day, (Northern Print Studio, East London Printmakers, Swansea Print Workshop).
7
Experience needed to become a member? Some studios don’t ask visitors to be members to use the facilities but they need enough printmaking experience to work independently in the studio (East London Printmakers).
Other requirements are that occasional users access the studio when technical assistance is available (Gloucestershire Printmaking Co-op).
Hot Bed Press (in Salford) and Red Hot Press (in Southampton) are open to all and don’t stipulate on their websites that experience is necessary to become a member or to use the studio facilities.
8
How to apply to become a memberScottish Print Studios Glasgow Print Studio and Edinburgh Print Studio operate a similar application process for new members - apply to workshop manager and attend an induction. With Highland Print Studio new members are asked to take a class in the technique they want to learn and then become a member of the Studio. DCA asks new users to register (pay an annual fee). ‘On registering, users receive a Users Guide and Conditions of Usage and take part in an induction course which outlines the systems relating to booking of equipment, payment for use of the studio space and equipment, health and safety information and procedures, education and other opportunities’.
9
How to apply to become a memberEnglish Print Studios Ochre Print Studio - have a compulsory induction to facility and studio procedure which takes 30 mins and is part of the first open access session.Spike Print Studio - need to attend an informal interview (showing a small portfolio of work) and attend an induction (cost £15) to become a member. Must be competent in one area of print to be a member.John Howard Print Studio - operates session fees only; to use Open Access Studio need a 15 minute induction and studio orientation.Oxford Printmakers Co-operative - newcomers may be asked to bring in a portfolio of work and they must do a probationary 20 hours first at a cost of £2 per hour + materials.Cuckoo Farm Studios - run as a small co-operative with a 2 day induction process for new members led by an existing member. Applications for membership are reviewed by committee.
10
How to apply to become a memberEnglish Print Studios Gloucestershire Printmaking Co-op - application form.Leicester Print Workshop - application form plus an induction course for all including experienced printmakers.
Ireland Print StudiosBlack Church Print Studio - more complex application process dependant on ability and use of studio:Access (artists): assessed twice per year in March and September by 2 Board Members and 1 independent assessor. They need a ‘strong, cohesive portfolio of original artwork (min. 8 pieces) showing the development of concept and ideas as well as technical proficiency in the chosen print form’. They should also submit a recent CV and artist statement.Temporary Access: is offered to applicants who must have attended at least 1 class or a minimum of 1 day assisted access at the Studio although this does not guarantee selection.
11
How to apply to become a memberIreland Print StudiosBlack Church Print Studio Temporary Access (contd): applicants should submit a portfolio of print work; show they can work independently and have a high degree of technical proficiency. Plus provide a CV and artist statement. They should also include an outline of the project / work they wish to complete in the studio specifying the number of days required and chosen area of print. The selection panel for this level of access is the Print Co-ordinator and the Technical Manager.
CanadaOpen Studio operate a different membership approach. Would-be members need to have rented in the studio for a minimum of 6 months; applications are approved by the Board of Directors and include a CV and cover letter.

SummaryOpening hoursThe Scottish print studios have similar opening hours and Glasgow Print Studio is as accessible as other studios in the UK, USA and Canada. As an additional benefit to members 24 hour (keyholder) access could be considered; if this was considered an option by the Board it would be useful to gauge interest in a Members’ Survey as there will be an impact on the Workshop (member safety, security etc.)
Application processThe application process is run along similar lines for all studios although large city studios, e.g. Black Church Print Studio in Dublin and Spike Print Studio in Bristol operate quite formalprocesses: a portfolio and an interview. This may be driven by the number of applications formembership; Spike Print Studio mentions a waiting list for membership on its website.
Induction sessionsSome studios charge for their induction sessions which seems unfair as the induction is a keypart of becoming a member and being able to use the Studio safely.
Membership pricingGlasgow Print Studio’s topline fee for full membership is more expensive in comparison to13 of the other studios. However, when session fees are added, GPS becomes more competitive (£240) and Edinburgh Printmakers looks very expensive at £550 per year.

Other studios with high membership fees may have ‘session fees’ already included, makingdirect comparisons difficult. Spike Print Studio’s membership rate for Keyholders (experienced printmakers allowing 24 hour access) is £517 per year or £47 per month by standing order; there is a minimum membership period of 6 months.
Most of the studios are likely to have a captive audience and will serve a wide catchment area because of the quality of the facilities and the range of equipment available to artists. This may mean there is some flexibility in pricing: members are likely to pay more to access good quality facilities near to their home. Again, satisfaction / dissatisfaction with the membership fee and session fees charged by GPS can be measured in a Members’ Survey and also in an ‘exit’ survey if artists cancel their membership.
The Canadian Open Studio facility operates an interesting scheme. In this case, would-be members have to rent space at the Studio for 6 months before being considered for membership.
