How: A Judicious Approach
Prepare to Create a Meaningful Presence
• Think about your twitter goals
• Plan your Twitter persona
• Choose a twitter name / photo
• Develop your back story – first 4 or 5 tweets
• Research who you will follow based on goals – choose at least 20
11
Day 1 on Twitter
• Signup for a Twitter account via computer
• Tweet your back story in 3 to 4 posts
• Follow a few of your friends that you know will follow you back immediately
• Pull up your target list of influencers and begin to follow people
• Follow about a dozen people on day one
12
Day 2 on Twitter
• Scan posts of people you are following at least 2x day. Get a feel for what tweets you find interesting
• Can you insert yourself into conversation or offer further info? If yes, do
• Post at least one new tweet per day
• Check Twitter trends, get familiar with posts
• Look at your follower to following numbers? If they delta is 10 or less, follow more people
13
Day 3-14
• Continue to scan posts of people you are following at least 2x per day
• Insert yourself into conversation or offer further info?
• Post at least one new tweet a day
• Continue to watch follower vs. following numbers? If they delta is 10 or smaller, follow more people
14
Day 14
• Choose a mobile Twitter app for your phone
• Load Tweetdeck onto your computer – Create lists based on your objectives
– Setup columns to follow these lists
• Continue to follow new people – based on your predefined objectives
15
Tweet Lingo & Info• Tweets are public
• Tweet length is a maximum of 140 characters. 130 if you want to allow for easy retweets
• @ use it to ID a tweeter in your post. Shows up as a mention in their twitter account. Ex.: See you Tuesday @tamicasey
• # = hashtag, easy way to search for info on twitter. Example #SMCSFSV
• RT = retweet. Example RT@tamicasey So excited to see my Intel friends today>>Me too
16
Tweet Lingo & Info• DM is a direct message. It is seen only by recipient, but
you must be following a person for it to work. Example: D@tamicasey my number is 650-340-1984
• Make sure to use URL shortener when tweeting links. Bit.ly a good one. Tweetdeck shortens URLs automatically.
• Twitter location an interesting feature, use it wisely.
17
Twitter Lists• Twitter allows you to curate and follow lists.
• Start following a few popular lists. Listorious is a great place to browse Twitter lists
• Build your own lists. There is a “New List” option on your Twitter homepage.
• Create descriptive, unique and flattering list names. Make sure to mark your list as public.
• Share your lists with your network and post them on Listorious.
