QUESTION 5 – HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR MEDIA PROJECTLaura Gregory

What type of image

have I used to

attract my audience?

• For my media project, I have used an array of images both in the film and for promotional use. However, I used the camera and composition of my shots to mainly show different types of body image. I thought this would be effective and key since my audience are in the late teen demographic and this age category are most likely to be effected by representation of body image shown in the media. I believe that this is very important as representation of body image in the media has been very absolute and there has been a biased amount of publicity of the ‘ideal’ body type than different types of body image. Therefore, I used real teenagers i.e. myself and Owen, to show that this is what teenagers naturally look like, even through different factors such as diet, amount of exercise, how social media and the internet is used, amount of sleep etc. as it makes the characters on screen look more authentic. I feel this is the best way of representing the teenage community since film, especially, use many actors that are a lot older than the characters age, however, since they have a youthful look they can pass as that age. This is sometimes not the greatest idea if a director took on someone much older than the characters age as they may be more experienced, however, actors are encouraged to have a strict diet and a serious amount of exercise, which can be a cause to why all types of body image may not be represented since its something that is strongly recommended to all actors.

What types of people are being

represented in my

film?

• In the actual film I made, I have represented:• Teenagers, single mothers, different generations,

gender, different regional identities.• In the overall film, I would have represented:• All of the above, ethnicity and class and status.• Status is definitely expressed since the villain is

seen as a slave first of all and shows how the social hierarchy wasn’t just based on money but on the colour of the persons skin. If you were from an African descent, your status was extremely low.

• Ethnicity is presented through the antagonists back story and the difference in class and status does result on his skin colour. My film presents accurate historical events that happened in the past and represents the change from this period in history to how the black community are presented in society.

What language have you

used?

• The dialect is very clear in my film that the family have originated from London, or have heavy roots in London. This is because all of the actors including myself have heavy familial roots in London. This dialect is very recognisable almost universally, however, it isn’t seen in most films as the majority of films are American. This can be an interesting film to film audiences since it isn’t American and it can particularly have an impact on British film audiences since it is set in the rural countryside of England yet the people have the same dialect that is seen in the urbanised capital of the country.

• I also wanted to make sure that the lexis used in my film correlated with what society uses in general and in normal day life. For example, I included an obscenity in my film to make it relatable for teenage and adult audiences and make it seem natural – as if people were talking in real life and therefore this naturalistic approach would engage my audiences even more.

What are the

subjects addressed

in my film?

• In my film, there is a focus on many subjects, and one of the subjects is quite taboo in todays society. My first real subject was of course murder. The last shot we see does not make it resolute that they may have been murdered, however, in the synopsis of the film in its entirety, the brother is killed in that scene and the aftermath of his death, whilst the scarecrow finds its next victim. This is a convention of horror and it has many sinister tones, but as a society we do forget that there are many twisted people and murder is something that happens too often.

• The next subject I would have addressed was the single mother family unit. It wasn’t definite if this woman was a single mother, however, I feel that this would be a good idea as it is unconventional to see and it represents the single parent audiences, which can have a big impact on sales of the film and the film may be praised and regarded in that sense.

• My next subject I wanted to briefly look at was the controversial topic of molestation. Of course, none does take place, but it is something that needs to be addressed and film is an effective way of highlighting the problem. Molestation is a repulsive act and unlawful, it impacts the victim and their family for the whole of their life. However, when someone accuses someone of doing the act and they haven’t done it, there is a big impact on their lives. By addressing this subject, it represents the people falsely accused and the victims of molestation, which makes people more aware of the subject.

• Also, the subject of slavery is shown. This represents a part of Western history that was very shameful and how the treatment of the black community has improved but in some cases, currently, black people are still being oppressed.
