- Relevance of Sociology and Anthropology to Education- Agent of socialization: family, peer, church, mass media, and school

What is Sociology?

- Sociology is the study of human behavior in society ( Anderson & Taylor 2004)

- Sociology is scientific study of human society and interactions. ( Thio 1994)

- The systematic study of human society, dedicated to the understanding of social interaction as people form groups , communities and societies. ( Barnard, Bugees and Kirby 2004)

What is the importance of sociology?

Sociology helps us make our lives better by knowing the different societies.

Sociology also helps improve the way we think about the attitude of different people in society

Relevance of Sociology to Education

Sociology helps teachers to understand children's backgrounds and why they act the way they do.

Sociology helps teachers to be aware of certain outcomes of a group's behavior, and to understand that attitudes, values and beliefs of those around them in order to affect teaching.

Relevance of Sociology to Education

Sociology is very significant as it introduces a teacher to a collection of techniques that are required in classroom teaching. Such techniques include; understanding and applying interaction in the classroom, the disposition of norms to the students by the teachers, understanding teacher-student relationship and communication, provision of career guidance and finally understanding social roles of teachers and students.

In sociology teacher learns how to manage students, both those who are morally upright and those morally decayed.

What is Anthropology?

Study of humans – their origins, biological characteristics and cultural development, social relationships and more- based in scientific methods.

It examines the cultures of mankind and how well all came to be where we are.

Is the study of humankind from its beginnings millions of years ago to the present day.

What is the importance of Anthropology?

Anthropology gives you understanding of world affairs and world problems.

Anthropology gives you skills for constructing solutions to human social and environmental problems.

Anthropology gives you deeper understanding of yourself.

Anthropology gives you deeper knowledge of humankind—at all times, in all places.

Relevance of Anthropology to Education

Anthropology is an important part of education for many reasons. One of which is that it allows people to study how humans and other organisms react to certain environments.

It gives us insight to how things work, live, and coexist. Through anthropology, we can determine how things were made, how things live and react to different scenarios, how different texts and our perception of ideas changes us, and how to examine the changes that happen upon us via nature or from ourselves or other organisms.

It shows us a great deal how much more advanced we are to become, and how far we have traveled technologically and psychologically through the ages. 

Are various groups or institutions that play a significant role in the socialization of an individual and in shaping that person’s personality.

Agents of socialization

- the family as the basic unit of the society serves as the primary agent of socialization and can also be the main agent of socialization.

FAMILY

enables children to view the world through the same eyes, not with those they refer as person on authority.

PEER GROUPS

-Influences the values, personality and behavior system of the person exposed. -- Function to inform, entertain, and educate.

MASS MEDIA

the school is an institution that is established explicitly for the purpose of socializing people.

Also serves to function in teaching children cultural, values and attitudes and preparing them for their roles as adults.

SCHOOL

Influences individual belief and value system by it’s religious beliefs and guide.

Plays a major role in socialization
