UNIT 1.- THE TECHNOLOGY PROCESSWhat is technology?...
How can we define Technology?
Introduction: we can say that Technology is the bridge between technique and science
Science Technique
Technology
How can we define Technology?
Complete definition:
Technology is the practical application of knowledge (science) and skills (techniques) to create solutions
(technological objects or systems) which satisfy our needs or solve our problems.

Steps and actions in the technological process
1º) Identifying: Problem Analysis
What three conditions do I need for a workman´s protective helmet to work
correctly?
Problem: Design and build a workman´s protective helmet.
Problem Analysis
2º) Identifying: Exploration of ideasIf I search for some images on the Internet I
can be more accurate as to what kind of conditions my technological object will
need to solve the problemadjustable
bright colour
resistant safety
hard
3º) Propose solutions (sketch)
I draw a sketch to express and communicate my idea in an informal way.
My sketch:Is drawn only with a pencil (without using
any tool drawings, like a ruler).Has three dimensions.Has measurements. Specify the materials that I´m going to
use.
3º) Propose solutions (sketch)
I draw a sketch to express and communicate my _____ in an ________ way.
My sketch:
only with a pencil.three dimensions.measurements. materials.
idea informal
4º) Best idea selection (technical drawing)
The technical drawing is a formal draw.My technical drawing:Should be drawn with pencil and others
drawing tools (ruler and set square)Has different views (front, floor and left
profile)Has a numbered Cut out with
measurements (each of the pieces that make the technological object)
4º) Best idea selection (technical drawing)
The technical drawing is a _______ draw.My technical drawing:ruler and set squareHas different views numbered Cut out
formal
5º) Action plan definition: the process sheet
In this step you are going to plan the construction process and decide:
What you are going to do.How you are going to do it.
When you are going to do it.How long it is going to take.
5º) Action plan definition: the process sheet
In this step you will do the process sheet:
6º Building
We make the object.Make sure you follow the working procedure and respect the Rules for the Workshop.
Each day you have worked at the workshop you have to write down, as homework, at the point 6. of your Memory (Building Process) the date and the things that you´ve done at the workshop.
7º TestingIs a critical analysis of the final product to
help improve it.Questions to help your testing:
Appearance: analyse the aesthetic aspects of the object. Could you improve it?
Use: Does it work? Is it easy to use? Durability: how long will the object last? Is it
likely to get broken easily? Possible modifications: based on your
previous answers, is there any part of the design that you could improve?
The workshop
In the workshop we have three areas
Class area
Working area
Storeroom
Rules for the workshop
TOOLS MANAGER: will control the tools. She/he will sign the control sheet at the beginning and end of the session
CLEANING MANAGER: will make sure that everything is clean.
All of you will take part in each task, so you will use the tools, materials, and you also have to clean and follow the safety rules
Rules for the workshop
The material is expensive, so try to take care of it
Working procedure: First of all: think for yourself how to do it Then: make sure you know how to use the
tools and the machines and try to do it by yourself
Finally: if you can´t do it, ask your teacher for help
Rules for the workshop
Hygiene rules at workKeep your hands clean and dry. You
are going to work with high voltage electricity
In order not to get trapped by a rotating machine don’t wear loose clothing
Clean and keep your desk in order while you are working
Rules for the workshop
You should pay attention to these rules: At the beginning of the class you will sit
down in the class area and review what you made in the previous class
Tools check: you are responsible for the tools, so if you break anything due to misuse you will have to pay for it
Ten minutes before the end of the class, all of you have to start cleaning the floor, tools, materials, and putting the chairs on the table
Five minutes before the end, we will check the cleaning and the tools. Then we will ask you what you have done during the session
Rules for the workshop
You are not allowed to move from your working table, unless you want to ask me something
Never shout my name, If you need something you have to come close to me
If I count to three, or I raise my hand you have to stop IMMEDIATELY
