When starting a new design project, there are steps of the graphic design process to follow that will help you to achieve the best results.

Rather than jump right into a graphics software program to try to create a final version, you can save yourself time and energy by gathering the right information, researching, sketching and allowing for revisions.

Five Phases of the Design Process

Page 3: The Design Process

• The “Creative Brief”

• Background

• Target audience

• Objectives

• Single message

• Mandatory elements

1. Discovery Phase

• Timeline• Budget• Approvals• Project Output

Page 4: The Design Process

• Identify the competitors

• Research current trends

• Gather information

• Don’t always rely on the computer

2. Research Phase

Page 5: The Design Process

• Step Away from the Computer!

• Write every thought regardless of whether or not it ‘makes sense’ (we’ll sort it out later)

• Sketch, sketch, sketch!

• Consider possible themes & concepts

• Refer to your Look Book for ideas

3. Brainstorming Phase

Page 6: The Design Process

• NOW you can open the software!

• Make sure your document is set up properly

• Output settings

• Spec Sheet Guidelines

• Refer to your sketches, notes, and Look Book

• Always ‘check yourself’ against your Design Principles (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, etc.)

• Never design just 1 layout

• Communicate!!

4. Production Phase

Page 7: The Design Process

• Know how to ‘sell it’

• Make the file ‘client-friendly’ for reviewing (via email, web, print)

• Use proper communication skills for presenting the end result

• Submit the file properly if dealing with a printer

• Allow enough time for any revisions

5. Presentation Phase
