Eat less. Eat better. Move more. “Unhealthy diets and a lack of physical activity in the US cause more health loss than smoking, alcohol, or drug use.”

– Ali Mokdad, PhD, director of Middle Eastern Initiatives and professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME)

The United States has made significant health improvements over the last two decades, including:

• Lower disease burden rates since 1990 of nearly all childhood conditions and diseases

• Lower mortality rates for people at every age since 1990

• Significant reduction in death and disability from HIV/AIDS

But Canada and other countries in Europe and Asia are improving at a faster rate.

Why is the US less healthy than other countries? The researchers point to poor dietary practices and

inadequate physical activity as two of the driving forces. In fact, dietary risks moved ahead of smoking as the leading cause of disability and death in the study released recently in the American Journal of Medicine.

Christopher Murray, MD, DPhil, is a professor of Global Health at the University of Washington and director of the IHME. He presented the findings of the study at an event hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama as part of her Let’s Move! campaign.

Bad choices and risky behaviors fall in the category of “lifestyle-related risk factors”. Genetics are important but not as important as lifestyle practices. Touchmark recognizes the importance of providing healthy lifestyle options in its 11 communities in the US and Canada.

To find out more about the Full Life Wellness & Life Enrichment offerings at Touchmark, contact any member of the Full Life team. And ask about Touchmark’s celebration of Active Aging Week, coming up in September. It’s never too late to gain the benefits of eating better and moving more!

Each year, Touchmark celebrates Active Aging Week the last week of the month.

Promoted by the International Council on Active Aging, the week focuses on the many positive things that people can do to change the way they age. The community’s theme this year is Experiencing the Full Life.

Painting Art Class.• Sept 23, 3:30 pm: Men’s

“Touchmark has continually met the needs of my parents. My dad has had increasing memory loss, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that Touchmark’s memory care is about to open. It is comforting that both my parents can live at the same community and be well taken care of.”
