Page 5: UAV Pilot Training

Phase 1: Ground School• Checklists

– Setup and inventory– Transmitter switch assignments– Preflight– Takeoff– Error Messages– Landing

• General characteristics• Dimensions & weight• Motors• Propellers• Electronic speed controls• Wireless links• Fuel/Flight Battery• Flight Parameters• Limitations

– Airspeed– Power & Powerplant– Weight– Center of Gravity– Maneuver– Temperature– Weather– Range– Wireless link

5

• Emergency Procedures– Motor failure– Communication failure– Low battery power– GCS failure– Compass calibration error– Fire– Forced landings

• Normal procedures– Preflight– Takeoff– Post landing– Aircraft log book– Aircraft maintenance book– Pilot log book

• Performance– Flight times & wireless transmission

• Weight and balance– CG & Weight

• Air Vehicle Systems Description– Fuel/Battery required– Wireless communications

• Handling, service and maintenance– Propeller care– Battery care and use– Preventative maintenance

Page 6: UAV Pilot Training

Phase 2: Simulator

• Fly fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft• Become proficient using two joysticks.• Practice what is more difficult for you. – Typically when the aircraft is coming or facing towards

you because the controls can seem backwards• Practice unusual attitude recovery

– Push the joysticks up and together momentarily which will cause the vehicle to snap or spin uncontrollably. Practice recovering from this position.

• Practice take offs and landings

Phase 3: Flight Instruction

• Day 1– Pre-flight briefing– Manually fly fixed wing UAV

• Day 2– Pre-flight briefing– Manually fly rotor wing UAV (hex/quad/heli-copter)

• Day 3 – Pre-flight briefing– Program autopilot– Fly on autopilot
