Deadlines

Deadline Met the deadline

Unit 13 – LO 2Monday 13th October

Unit 13 – LO 4Tuesday 3rd February x

Unit 13 – LO 5Friday 13th March

I missed the LO4 deadline because I needed more time than predicted to make sure my pitch was the expected quality to complete it, I turned the speed of my work around afterwards to ensure I met the LO5 deadline. I did this by staying after school and working late until the work was done to a high enough standard.

Programs used

Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Microsoft Word 2010

I used Photoshop to construct my magazine pages. Photoshop was the correct program to use because it had a range of tools and feature that were key to making the high quality pages I needed to make. This was the correct program to use for the first issue of Klashed as it would help give the end quality needed for a magazine issue with their range of useful tools.

I used Microsoft word for my proposals, draft interview and the write up of my double page spread article and photography plan. Word was a useful program for these tasks as they ensured I had the correct grammar and spelling for the written tasks.

Font

These are all quite ‘edgy’ font styles which are similar to Kerrang!. I have narrowed my font style down to similar ones to Kerrang! because they will battle the competition with Kerrang well.

Fonts

I used the font “insomnia” from www.dafont.com this was copyright free. The font style was free to download and once downloaded I could use this font in Photoshop as I would with a default font, this meant that choosing and using the font style of my choice would be easy and not waste time with methods around the problem of not being able to use it for my masthead.

House Style

NameI have decided to use the name ‘Klashed’ for my magazine. My choice was generated from the noise made by drums which almost sounds like crashing and clashing of metal. This was founded with intention because ‘Kerrang!’ uses their name because it is a derivative from the sound of a guitar.Since ‘Kerrang!’ is my magazine of inspiration, this is appropriate.

Colour SchemeI have chosen to use this colour scheme because it reflects different types of rock music. The dark purple is associated with Rock Pop. The purple symbolises brightness and pop and the dark element in the purple always refers to rock which is known for being dark.I have chosen black because it represents pure rock and the yellow colour to show modernised rock.

Tools Used

Quick Selection ToolI used the quick selectiontool to highlight the artist, inverse the selection and then remove all of the background so that Icould place the artist on the front cover without any unnecessarycontent.

Shape ToolI used the shape tool to create boxes in which the other headlines and articles would be.Type ToolThis tool in particular was important in creating the pages for Klashed as a lot of text was needed on the front cover, including the masthead.

Eraser ToolThis was used to straighten out mistakes made if there were issues with other tools.

Eye dropper toolI used this tool to keep a consistent colour scheme which would establish a brand identity

Safe working practices - Colour

Eye Dropper ToolThis is evidence of me using the eye dropper tool, I used the eye dropper tool to establish a brand identity throughout the DPS.

I added the colour that I collected with the eye dropper to my swatches to make sure I didn’t compromise the brand identity.

Safe working practices – Pen Tool

This is evidence of me using the pen tool to ensure that the text would wrap around the drop capital perfectly and give a professional finish to the way the article was being presented.

For accuracy purposes I used the ruler tool (cmd R and to hide it once finished I used cmd H) so that I could make the DPS look neater and more accurate.

Safe working practices – Quick Selection

This is evidence of me using the quick selection tool. I used the quick selection tool to remove the background from the image of the artist so that I could then place the artist on the front cover of my magazine. I did this by selecting the artist and inverting it to remove the whole background as a pose to individually selecting parts of the image.

Safe Working Practices - Swatches

There are 3 main colours in my colour scheme, a gold shade of yellow, black and white. The only colour I needed to add to swatches was the yellow, I named it ‘KLASHED Colour Scheme 1’. To add it to swatches I needed to use the eye dropper tool to sample the colour so that I could then add it to swatches.

The advantage to doing this is that it will make sure I use the same colour every time to establish a brand identity.

Changes made to FC

The changes made to the Front Cover were not as many as the DPS, all that I changed on the FC was the pull quote off the interview’s font. I changed the font because it did not stand out enough and did not follow the colour scheme, this would have contradicted the brand identity.

Page 17: UNIT 14 LO4

Changes made to DPS

Changes MadeOnce I had finished my DPS I reviewed it and found some areas that I wanted to change. I added a guitar to the right hand side of the page to fill the dead space because otherwise the page would look empty. Another thing that changed was the differentiated questions and answers, the answers and questions are different colours fully now and more distinctive to which is who.

There is now a social media promotion at the top of the page encouraging readers to follow the artist on Twitter, this draws more attention to the artist and makes more people who read the articleaware of the singer. Before

Conclusion

LO4 focuses on the final stages of production for example editing. I analysed my final pages in my magazine and also reflected on my strengths and weaknesses throughout production. Slide 3 was about my ability to meet deadlines and why (if I hadn't) I missed them.

Throughout the LO there were slides on accuracy and what measures had to be taken to ensure the best possible work and quality for my magazine pages. There were specific tools I used to ensure this and they had to be used with precision which is analysed in my safe working practice slides.

The location of where the photos were taken are also an important part of the process which were recorded and explained so that the location was safe and usable.
