The schools’ staff wellness committee will develop and oversee a multi-faceted plan to promote staff and student health and wellness including healthful eating, physical activity and other elements of a healthful lifestyle.

A staff wellness coordinator was hired for the district.

During the summer months, various exercise classes (i.e. kick boxing, cardio, step aerobics and dance) were offered to district staff at a local health club, free of charge.

USD 497 Employee Wellness website was launched September 10, 2008.

500 participants are signed up for Just Walk 10,000 Steps a Day.

Approximately 150 members are signed up for a 13-week Weight Watchers Program.

Each school site will have at least one identified Wellness Committee member.

This person will serve as a leader to facilitate and communicate district wide activities. This leader will also serve as a spokes person for their site to ensure school site needs are being met.

The District Wellness Coordinator will have monthly communication with each Wellness Committee member.

There will be a minimum of two Wellness Committee meetings during the school year and each school site will have a representative present.

A mission statement will be created by the Wellness Committee that incorporates the school district mission statement.

The Wellness Committee will evaluate programs throughout the year. Programs will be modified as needed.

At least 50% of the food items sold in vending machines or school stores meet the a la carte guidelines below:

Meetings and other functions will offer healthy foods and snacks. Food choices should be low in fat, sugar and sodium.

Increase employee awareness of healthy behaviors and available health resources.

Employees will be offered health risk assessments and biometric screenings.

A school district wellness and benefits fair will be organized annually.

On-site health education will be offered addressing topics of chronic disease prevention, obesity prevention, healthy eating habits, sleep habits and stress reduction.

Wellness Coordinator will distribute chronic disease prevention materials such as heart health, diabetes prevention/management and adult immunizations.

Employees will be educated on the exercise recommendations from the American Heart Association.

Do moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day, five days a week or

Do vigorously intense cardio 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week and do eight to 10 strength-training exercises, eight to 12 repetitions of each exercise twice a week.

Moderate-intensity physical activity means working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat, yet still being able to carry on a conversation. It should be noted that to lose weight or maintain weight loss, 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity may be necessary. The 30-minute recommendation is for the average healthy adult to maintain health and reduce the risk for chronic disease.

All employees will adhere to School District no smoking policy.

Information and resources will be provided to employees on how to quit smoking.
