WORLD’S WATER CONSUMPTION

How many water do you think you spend in your house?

How many washers do you do in a week?

How do you wash the dishes?

Think about how many uses you do of the water:

Page 8: Wateruses

In your house, do you drink tap water or bottled?

Page 9: Wateruses

While you are brushing your teeth, is the tap open or close?

Do you throw the oil down the sink?

If you have an individual/community swimming pool, how many times is it

filled?

TREATMENT OF WATER

✤ Sewage treatment

It consists on a process of removing organic matter and pollutants from waste water and household sewage.

SIMULATION OF WATER TREATMENT IN THE LAB

✤ Filtration removes particles from water.

✤ WHAT ARE WE GOING TO PURIFY?

✤ We are going to purify :

✤ H2O + oil, meaning liquid + liquid.

✤ And H2O + Organic Matter, meaning liquid + solid.

✤ HOW ARE WE GOING TO PURIFY IT?

✤ To purify these mixtures we are going to use:

✤ A set purification system mainly composed of activated charcoal

✤ A filtration kit column that you can buy it ready to go.

Activated charcoal setup I

PROCEDURE

1.We take a baker and we place a funnel at the top.

2.We pour activated charcoal.3.We set a strainer that contains cotton wool.4.And above all an inverted half plastic bottle containing pebbles.

5.We pour 100 mL of water and 100mL of oil, in a baker, and we mix it.

6.We pour the 75% of the mixture, and we wait for the filtration to happen.

Filtration Kit PROCEDURE

1. First of all we have to set up the structure reading the manual instructions

2. We place the four containers in a column 3. At the bottom we put the filter paper4. In the container above we pour activated charcoal

5. At the top we place sand and above it little pebbles.

6. We filter two different samples 1) First, we pour the rest of 25% liquid mixture 2) We pour the rest of 25& liquid-solid mixture

7. We wait for the filtration to happen.

CONCLUSIONS

1. Our set of filtration works even better than the filtration kit , is easy to clean for reusing and obviously cheaper.

2. Pebbles or/ and sand layers trap and strain both oil and solid organic matter allowing water to pass through it but not oil or organic matter.

3. Activated carbon and cotton works primarily through adsorption - a process in which the solid organic matter and oil from water "sticks" these materials .

4. The aim of filtration is to eliminate colour, taste, odour, and other organic matter problems presents in water.
