What is A

Weather?

The weather is the state of the atmosphere at any time. Weather includes such things as precipitation(rain), temperature, air pressure, and cloud coverage. Weather changes from day to day. Daily changes in weather are due to winds and storms. Trends in temperature and weather conditions tend to be predictable during a season. Seasonal changes are due to the Earth rotating around the sun.

Rain

o Rain is also called precipitation.o Water droplets form from warm air.o Rising warm air carries water vapor

(invisible water in the air) high into the sky.

o Water vapor cools forming water droplets around tiny bits of dust in the air.

o Several factors cause rain: Mountains, low-pressure areas, cold fronts, and jet streams.

Fun fact: Raindrops are shaped like hamburgers.

Snow Snowy o Snowflakes form when water vapor freezes into ice crystals in the clouds.

o The ice crystals attract cooled water droplets to form various shapes.

o The crystals get heavy and fall toward the ground.

o If the air is cold enough, the snow falls all the way to Earth without melting.

o Snow forms at a temperature of less than 32 degrees F.

o No two snowflakes are alike.o Snowflakes are made of many

ice crystals and are six-sided.

Fun fact: More snow falls each year in southern Canada and the northern U.S. than at the North Pole.

Cloudy

CloudyClouds

o Clouds are a large collection of tiny water or ice crystals.

o The droplets are so small and light they float in the air.

o Clouds are water.o Clouds form when

water vapor turns back into liquid water droplets (Condensation).

o There are different types of clouds that form in different ways.

o Each cloud brings it own kind of weather.

WindyWind

o Wind is air in motion.o Wind is made by the

uneven heating of the Earth’s surface by the sun.

o When the sun warms the air, the air expands and gets lighter, and rises.

o Two factors needed to specify wind: direction and speed.

o Warm air rises, then cool air moves in and replaces the rising warm air which causes the wind to blow.

o Air blows from High Pressure to Low Pressure.

Suno The Sun is the

largest object in our solar system.

o The Sun is the center of our solar system.

o The Sun provides light, heat and energy to Earth.

o It is made up of gasses, mostly hydrogen.

o The Sun is a star. It is the closest star to Earth.

o The Sun is very bright.

o The Sun rotates every 25-36 days.

Fun Fact: The Sun can fit 109 planet Earths across its surface.

What isTemperature?

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness that can be measured using a thermometer. Temperature is measured in degrees on the Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin scales.

First Grade

Science3. Weather can be observed, measured, and described. As a basis for understanding this concept:     a. Students know how to use simple tools (e.g., thermometer, wind vane) to measure weather conditions and record changes from day to day and across the seasons.     b. Students know that the weather changes from day to day but that trends in temperature or of rain (or snow) tend to be predictable during a season.c. Students know the sun warms the land, air, and water
