The Plane CrashDocumentary Analysis
Type of documentary: Mixed as it shows different range of clips including interviews and
footage of a plane crash.
Themes: Planes, Crash, Airport, Skydive, Near death experience
Narrative structure: Multi stranded because it was about different story about plane crash and how to stop them. It was non linear because all these events happened at different times such as they would cut to a plane crash in the past
then cut to the present. Closed ending because all the questions where answered
CameraworkThe camera work on this documentary was intense as it starts off with an establishing shot of a plane crashing in the ground. This gives an idea of what type of documentary the audience is watching. It then shows big close up of a the pilot, this give an understanding of what it is like to be a pilot on a plane. The interviews used medium close up with the interviewee giving direct address. This makes the interview even more intense
and serious.
Mise En Scene
The mise en scene is mostly shown outside. Such as open dry land where they used to crash the plane. This shows the amount of space they need to crash the plane. The shot of a co-pilot wearing skydive gear on the plane shows the inside of the plane. This give an idea of what a plane looks like for audience who have never experience this.
EditingThe editing used quick fast paced when ever they would show a clip of the plane
crashing. This then build up tension for the audience. They also used a dissolve at the
start of the documentary for when the screen dissolve to a black screen.
SoundThe voice over was a clear standard English male. This made
the documentary clear. It also shows what type of target audience this documentary is aimed at. The voice holds the
narrative together and left the documentary opinions open for the audience. They used an upbeat non-diegetic sound to
build up the tension of when they where crashing the plane or a interviewee would mention something dramatic and the
sound would build the emotion for the audience
GraphicsThe graphics used a lot of a lot of white text such as the title of the documentary and when they cut to a black screen with the text written on it saying "One Month Earlier" this was done to make it clear and understanding for the audience. When the interview appear they place the interviewee on the left side and put the text on the right side. This was done to make it clear. They also put subtitles of what someone was saying. This was done so the audience could understandable and know what the person was saying as it was not clear.
Archive Material
The archive mostly used material of the public video footage of an actual plane
crash. This makes the documentary more realist and place the audience in their place of actually feeling what a plane crash would
feel like.
