When mourning a friend, we are grieving the loss of that person, and also the many roles they played in our lives. Recognizing these roles can be helpful in understanding the impact of the loss.
Friend as coping partner in life’s challenges. Often it is our friends who have gotten us through other tough times. Facing their death without them here to provide support can feel like a double loss and force us to find new ways of coping at an already challenging time.
Friend as activity partner. Our friends are often the people with whom we enjoy fun activities and diversions. When we lose our Bridge partner, member of our golf foursome, Mah Jongg friend, or fishing buddy, we are experiencing not only the loss of that person but also an upheaval in how we spend our time and how we meet our need for meaningful, enjoyable activity. Finding new ways to fill this need, while also feeling bereft, can feel daunting.
Friend as keeper of shared history. Our friends are often those who were there with us for memorable life events, from the mundane to the momentous. The death of a friend can mean losing the ability to share special memories with someone who was there alongside us and can feel like losing a portion of one’s own past as well.
Given the multifaceted losses we face when a friend dies, what can we do to help ourselves through?
Allow yourself to feel/grieve. Often people try to avoid or fast-forward through difficult emotions. But feelings that are ignored don’t just go away, and often they come out in other, less healthy ways. The feelings we try to avoid often cause us greater pain than those we allow ourselves to feel.
Seek out people who you find supportive (even if they’re not the people you might “expect” support from). People are often disappointed when significant people in their
Honoring your FEELINGS, Honoring their MEMORYThe loss of close friends is one of the more distressing challenges of older adulthood, yet also one of the more under-acknowledged. Family members of the deceased are typically recognized as mourners and afforded the rituals and allowances of the grieving role. Yet, close friends may be left similarly bereft but without the same validation and support for their loss.
Sadly, the lack of validation can lead to further isolation, sadness and loneliness, in addition to that of the loss itself.

lives do not respond to their grief in ways that they find supportive. It is helpful to remember that people’s responses are influenced by a multitude of factors that may have very little to do with how much they care, and more to do with their own underlying issues, coping styles, and possibly their discomfort with seeing us in pain. Sometimes we are so focused on those we wish would respond in a supportive way, that we overlook others who are willing and able to support us in the ways we need. You may find that your greatest support comes from someone you didn’t expect, so keep an open mind.
Honor your friend’s memory by carrying forward their legacy. Think of small ways that you can keep their memory in your heart and their goodness in the world. If your friend always put you at ease, try doing that for others. If you used to treat one another for coffee, consider paying for the person behind you in line the next time you go out for
a cup. If you became friends performing in plays at your old high school, consider a donation to the district’s theatre program. Making something meaningful come from their life and loss can be a powerful outlet for your grief.
If you have experienced the loss of a friend, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team of Seniors of Syosset if we can be of support to you in your grief. Call 516.822.3535, x383.
