HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
Rotary Club of Sylva
September 10, 2015
Ron Mackert, RC of Haywood County
YOUR ROTARY CLUB’S LOCAL ACTIVITIES
I’d like to start by asking a simple question: Can you name some local activities or projects in which your Club has been involved? Why aren’t these local activities enough? Simply stated, there are serious problems outside WNC that also need our help.
If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep…
…you are more fortunate than 75% of the world’s population
If you have money in the bank, a wallet or purse, and
some spare change…
…you are among the top 8% of
the world’s wealthy
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness…
…you are more blessed than the million people that will not
survive this week
If you have never experienced the danger of war, the agony of imprisonment or torture, or the horrible pangs of starvation…
…you are luckier than 500 million people alive and starving.
If you can read this
message…
…you are more
fortunate than three
billion people in the
world who cannot
read it at all

SO,…WHAT DID WE DO?
First, we worked to get all members of The Rotary Club of Haywood County to become EREY’s (contributing $100 per year)
Once successful, we focused on helping everyone to become a Paul Harris Fellow ($1,000 total each) Contacted District 7670 for help
Sought immediate member contributions
Sought contributions over several months
Sought PHF Recognition Points to transfer
AS A RESULT, OUR CLUB RECENTLY RECOGNIZED:
2 – Multiple Paul Harris Fellows 1 - Paul Harris Fellow status given by a Rotarian to a business
6 - Paul Harris Fellow status given by a Rotarian to another individual
10 - Members of The Rotary Club of Haywood County achieving Paul Harris status for the first time
WE REACHED OUR GOAL
Thanks to the combined efforts of District 7670 officials, our club members, former club members and resource staff from The Rotary Foundation, our club achieved the rare distinction of becoming a
“100% Paul Harris Fellow Club.”
ARE THE WORLDWIDE ISSUES TOO OVERWHELMING?
According to UNICEF and the World Bank, it would take about $28 billion dollars a year to:
end malnutrition,
immunize all the children against preventable diseases, and
end illiteracy across the globe
We spend just a portion of our money on. . .
Cosmetic products $ 30 Billion Pet products $ 31 Billion Candy $ 24 Billion Other snack foods $ 18 Billion Ice Cream $ 20 Billion Soft Drinks $ 60 Billion Beer $ 45 Billion Fast food $ 103 Billion Weight control products $ 33 Billion Legal gambling $550 Billion
EACH YEAR IN THE US…
WHAT CAN YOUR CLUB DO?
Engage members in dialog and develop a plan to maximize knowledge of, and a commitment to, The Rotary Foundation
Actively involve members, officers and Board to obtain “buy-in” from everyone
Plan and schedule your follow-up
Publicize the plan to members, including any
scheduled activities
COMMUNICATION
Regularly remind members of their PHF status and available recognition points
Conduct Foundation-oriented Club programs (i.e., understanding PHF funds, contributions, recognition points, the grant process, Bequest Society and Benefactors, etc.)
Regularly communicate information about TRF (i.e., bulletins, newsletters, newspapers, e-mails, radio, television, social media, etc.)
OTHER POSSIBILITIES
Start now to contact former members about donating their available recognition points
Make a PHF contribution part of the dues
Publicize a list of special occasions for making a contribution to the Foundation (i.e., birthday, anniversary, graduation, job promotion, Mother’s/Father’s Day, etc.)
Make multiple PHFs, and recognizing “others” with a PHF, a BIG deal at a special event
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE
“No one can tell us what Rotary will be tomorrow, but one
thing is certain. What Rotary will
be tomorrow depends on what we Rotarians do
today.”
- Arch C. Klumph
