Stages of Abuse

Experimentation Learning how to use, how much to use, and a

potential “friend”. Four outcomes:

-Remaining experimenters

-Immediate negative or painful results,

-Sudden intense positive experience

-Social use (vast majority)

Rules of a Social User:-Limited Amount

-Limited Access

-Limited Importance

Primary reason: the “high”

Emotional costs, principles violated, values compromised

Use Rules:-Amounts Increase

-Stronger Access

-Non-using activities decrease in significance

-Suffer harmful consequences-continue to use

Addiction Stage

The most severe of cases

Incapable of quitting independently

Change lifestyle to accommodate use

Blame others

Consequences significantly increase

Only feel normal or happy while they are using

Behavioral and Physical -harmful situations, no regard for others, risky sexual activity, brain effects, liver effects, alcoholism…Effect on Growth

Facts Alcohol youth had harder time remembering words

and basic geometric patterns after only 10 minutes (age: 15-16)

Teens who begin drinking before the age of 15: Four times more likely

Kids of alcoholics-more likely to develop dependence

Over 20% of 8th graders have been drunk (study)

Tradition at the University of Virginia:

-Drinking Practice Tied To Last Home Football Game-Has killed 18 since 1990
