Background – important statistics

• Around 4,500 children suffer from limb deficiency yearly• 1,500 babies born with limb reduction every year• Congenital limb reduction twice as prevalent as traumatic amputation• Ratio of upper amputation to lower limb amputation 1:4

What is prosthesis• An artificial substitute or replacement of a part of the body such as a

tooth, eye, the leg, an arm, etc. • A prosthesis is classified into functional and aesthetic reasons or both.

History

• First recorded illustration of prosthetic replacement appears in the Rig-Veda, a religious text written in Sanskrit, compiled between 3,500 and 1,800 B.C. in India.

• The 5th Egyptian Dynasty (2750-2625 B.C.); archaeologists have unearthed the oldest known splint from that period.

• In the early 1500’s, French military doctor Ambroise Paré invented a hinged mechanical hand and prosthetic legs with locking.
