ARE YOU FEELING LICKED? I DO -- SOMETIMES!!! Like LAST MONTH when I spent nearly the entirety of JUNE, trying to figure a way out of that I-80 rest-stop just west of Vallejo (California)! Upon my Word! I felt trapped – like there was no way out. However, in collaboration with Sarah Elizabeth Beckon, Editrix, I finished the Commemorative Edition of the Ledger… Refer back to the Last INJUN COUNTRY Issue !! [July 14, 2013 – Ed.] PLAYERS: I had wanted to give her the scoop! We’re colleagues of a sort!! Of course! But the process of working up my own de facto obituary was a bit un-nerving. Can you imagine? The tension; the stress. I felt like I was writing POE!!! …. I mean, poor pastiche POE, of course!!! And PLAYERS, how I agonized over the future of my family, and whether they were FATED to a tragic death as triple-meat toppings for a massive ROAD-PIZZA !!! We were all very, very lucky to make it out of that spot alive!! And safely on to our next destination -- MARYSVILLE!!

The Extreme NW point in the Wackenreuder Composite – [Sheet I] precisely on the edge of Terra

Incognito -- is the city of Shasta City, an 1850’s gold mining BOOM TOWN – now a ghost town, just west

of Whiskey Creek, between Clear Creek and the Sacramento River – in Shasta County, California. Today, the remnants of Shasta City are preserved as a California State Historical Park, along Hwy 299, just a few miles east of Whiskeytown Lake… and a few miles west of Redding (Cal.)!!! NOW:

Recall, as was pointed out in the INJUN COUNTRY Issue, that on the Wackenreuder Composite, Terra Incognito has been Positively

Indicated by Wackenreuder, through the overlap of the Double Negatives !!! of …..

1) first, Wackenrueder’s “actual” unrendered topography of the foothills of the Shasta-Trinity Alps of

the California Coast Range, in this region west of Shasta City. This appears as the BLANK ZONE !! in the northwest corner of

Sheet I of the Composites !!!, and is to be “coupled with” …..

2) second, the overlapping unrendered zone [NOT SHOWN !! Has to be conceptualized !! – Ed.] extended from SHEET II of the Wackenreuder Composite, from the [UNRENDERED!!! – Ed.] surveys of the Clarence King Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel in Nevada [Also NOT SHOWN!!! Might have to be referenced!! – Ed ] as referenced in the C.G.S. legend, in the NOTE on the bottom of SHEET III of the Wackenreuder Composite …

…which the NOTE indicates includes territory up to 41° N – although the Wackenrueder Composite does not actually extend to this latitude!!! Got it? So the note is indicating territory not covered by the actual map!!! Quite clever!!!

PLAYERS!! Just as an ASIDE, if you still think Clarence King’s 40th Parallel Survey had anything to do with the 40th Parallel, or had in fact anything to do with parallelity, or, parallelism – you have another think coming!!! Only on Sheet V does King’s Survey even include the 40th parallel !!! OOPS!!! It’s really a 41st Non-Parallel Survey ……. See?

So … point being, that Herr Herman Ehrenberg’s “Private Notes” map, is precisely the requisite COVERAGE of the area INDICATED but not SHOWN by the Wackenreuder Composite!

Ehrenberg’s “Private Notes” map of the Klamath and Trinity River Watersheds, as I have said, is the map which I had earlier called the Map of TERRA INCOGNITO – way back in the rare world-famous TERRA INCOGNITO Issue !!

[Never released!!! – Ed.] Later re-titled the HIDDEN VALLEY Issue !! […and still never released – Ed.] !!!!

RIGHT? PLAYERS!! It’s pretty simple …

Ehrenberg was the first surveyor into TERRA INCOGNITO – in 1851.

Ehrenberg was the one who first charted the Josephine valley, and thus documented the arrival of the Rollins family wagon train into the Illinois River valley, that same summer!! Into what is now Josephine County (Oregon). And the Rollins family brought with them the little adopted Native American boy, from the burned-out city of Robin’s Nest (Oregon) Whom they had nicknamed NAPOLEON

OH, HECK!!! I Almost Forgot !!!

PLAYERS ! UNK is in TERRA INGONINTO now too!!! That’s right!!! As you will recall, Native American anthropologist UNK-NOWN had turned off Coast Hwy 101 at the mouth of the Klamath River , moving easterly, up to it’s confluence with the Trinity River … and then, his plan was to strike straight through the Trinity Forest up into the Trinity Mountains, to reach the ancestral area of the HOOPAS, and their Reservation their … But, PLAYERS!!! Like all the tribes, The Hoopas had HUGE hunting ranges, and so they were ALL OVER in those mountains and labyrinthine watersheds !!! You can bet they were all the way up the TRINITY RIVER as far as Weaverville (California) and further still, for eons, maybe, before Weaverville was even founded!!! Wowee!!

“Sierra Nevada to be the Seat of Science” !!

Players: Everyone knows the story!!

YES!! Of the dream of California pioneer and legendary businessman James Lick to found the world’s greatest ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY in California!!

WHAT A DREAM!!!!

PLAYERS: Lick himself knew nothing [technical] about ASTRONOMY … He had no training and no scientific background!! And yet, he had an inner aspiration -- which he made a determination to realize -- to apply his great accumulated wealth to found just such a serious, long-range scientific installation – which became the LICK OBSERVATORY we all know now!! [Now know? – Ed.][No – Ed.] It‘s situated atop Mt. Hamilton in the hills south of San Francisco Bay! The site is near San Jose, (California)

PLAYERS: Mt. Hamilton was actually the FOURTH LOCATION JAMES LICK SELECTED !!

LICK did considerable scouting around to find the optimum site for the observatory. One of the first choices was right downtown in San Francisco!!! After a few false starts like that, LICK sought out professional expertise …..

IN 1873, Lick asked famed High Sierra Surveyor Colonel Alexiy Waldemar Von Schmidt to select a suitable location for the new observatory, and he accepted.

It is worth noting that at the time, Von Schmidt was already ALL OVER the Sierra Nevada, as he ran the lines for his 1872-73 survey of the eastern border of the State of California – no simple task !!! Congress had appropriated $41,000 for this task -- to run the Cal-Nevada border line -- and it should not be a surprise that von Schmidt would want to integrate other contracts – like Lick’s -- with the federal border contract, and thus introduce “economies of scale” to the federal work, consolidate costs, and so forth!!! It should NOT be thought that von Schmidt was two-timing on his contract work!! He was already in the area!! WHAT HARM, then if von Schmidt picked up a modest ancillary contract with Lick, for the location of the new Observatory? ! [Sacramento Daily Union, October 27, 1873 – Ed.]

NONE … obviously.

After much careful investigation and due deliberation -- and drawing on his decades of field-work in California – Von Schmidt selected Lousy Point in Lake Tahoe, as the optimum situation for such a noble scientific enterprise. NOTE: Lousy Point was evidently also once called Cellar’s Point!!! Read the article !!! PLAYERS!! NO -- not in that article !!! TURN THE PAGE!

[Sacramento Union, October 29, 1873 – Ed.] RIGHT HERE!

Lousy Point!! AKA Cellar’s Point!!! [Sounds like “Lousy Cellular Point” !!! – Ed.] Not the most heart-warming names – and so “Dollar Point” replaced “Cellar’s Point” and then the name was quietly changed to Observatory Point, in recognition of Von Schmidt’s selection. See the cover illustration of This Week’s LICKED ? Issue !![ In fact, the entire history of Von Schmidt’s location of the Lick Observatory is a great way to learn the shoreline of Lake Tahoe as it stood in the years prior to 1873! Wowee!! GO AHEAD!! Try it at home !! Works great in combination with the TAHOE TAVERN method-- Ed.]

Although there were immediate questions, this site was even bigger news in San Francisco. Von Schmidt returned to the city to run the proposal by James Lick, and to verify clear title to the promontory. The story ran on the front page of the Daily Alta California, October 28, 1873!!!

LICK’s dedication, in the early 1870’s, to apply his great fortune amassed through commercial enterprise -- to purposes advantageous to the public welfare, through founding a scientific installation that would serve to place American astronomical research at the CUTTING EDGE worldwide, plays an early and very important chapter in the history of AMERICAN PHILANTHROPY !!!

Naturally, the LICK OBSERVATORY also played an early and important role in attracting and seating other astronomical and SPACE SCIENCE research facilities in the San Francisco Bay area!!! PLAYERS!!! Sometimes you have to understand how these American science driver projects get their START – including FALSE STARTS -- before you can know how and where they were – and will be -- ADVANCED!! But NOW you KNOW !!!

RIGHT?? Never pretend you’re as smart as you think you are !!! You may not be that good an actor!!!

WELL, PLAYERS: Von Schmidt’s site looked pretty good … for a moment or two. The weather was optimum, and naturally the air was crystal clear – like the waters of LAKE TAHOE. Indeed, as the next few years played out, work began to develop the site of LICK’S OBSERVATORY there on Lousy / Cellar / Dollar/ Observatory Point on the brink of the lake, just north of Tahoe City (California) and very near the site of the famed …. TAHOE TAVERN!

THE SITE was opened to access by a wagon road from Tahoe City, just north of TAHOE TAVERN. Work was done to clear the now famous Observatory Point, and further site prep was underway.. and the American public was anticipating “Scientific Fun on Lake Tahoe” Sacramento Daily Record, July 24, 1875.

But by the year 1875, the opinion among members of the scientific community, which had star questioned Col. Alexiy Von Schmidt’s choice of a Lake Tahoe site from the beginning, began to shift strongly against a location so remote… The challenge posed by the difficulty of access was one consideration, and this was coupled with concerns about reaching an installation that might be under several feet of snow, throughout much of the winter. In addition there was concern over constant evaporation off the lake – and the effect of the high moisture content of the air, on the sensitive optics that were to be installed on a promontory nearly totally surrounded by water , and, worst of all, a situation that would put the telescope actually BELOW the horizon!! NOT GOOD [See, the Sacramento Union, October 29, 1873 – preceding page!! Ed.] …

U.S.G.S. Tahoe Quad (1955) -- about eight years before the TAHOE TAVERN was destroyed by fire…

SO, PLAYERS!!! James Lick was eventually dissuaded from locating the groundbreaking scientific research installation – the LICK OBSERVATORY -- on the site selected by the peripatetic, uniquely ambitious, always enterprising, but frequently frustrated engineering and surveying genius Col. Alexiy Waldemar von Schmidt !!! Lick, with the Trustees of the Observatory, shelved the idea of locating the telescope on Observatory Point, at Lake Tahoe. [See above – Ed] And another site was selected, one that was, in1875, still fairly “remote” from the San Francisco lights, in the area of …. San Jose (California) !!
