A

messageto the man

who broke

my daughter’s

heart

Lena Ross

MARCH 2015

You broke my daughter’s heart.

For that, I want to

thank you.

And I want to

slap you hardat the same time.

Really hard.

You didn’t tell her the truth.

I know the truth hurts.

But it hurts

morewhen you uncover it later,

through other sources.

By not being honest,

you’ve cheated yourself.

Your break-up speech was an

“Oscar-winning performance”.

Your tears were not for her,

they were for you.

For your facade

and for your conscience.

If it hasn’t happened to you, it will.

And when it does, I hope you have the support of a loving family.

And the wisdom of a motherwho will resist the urge

to slap the personwho has hurt you.

Please don’t contact her.

Being friends rarely works.

It’s just a platitude.

And she values honestytoo much

to rate youas a friend.

Now, on a more positive note.

Thank you

Thank you for loving her.

Thank you for sharing

some wonderful moments and experiences

with her.

And an even

bigger thank you

for

letting her go.

By letting her go, she’s feeling lost.

This will

develop her character.

She is already

amazing.

You’ve helped build her

fortitude.

Her heart may be broken.

But you haven’t broken her.

You’ve helped make her

...more resilient

...more amazing.

I know this message is

harsh.

One day you may have a daughter.

And you will want to slap him –the man who hurts her.

You’ll understand how I feel right now.

And you might remember this message.
