Welcome Back! A message from your Western Region Vice President; Jordan Bond Villeneuve:

Members of DECA’s great Western Region! I’d like to be one of many to officially welcome you to the 2007-2008 school year! We have an exciting year ahead of us, and I am pleased to be joining you for what promises to be an eventful ride! I hope you’ve all had busy yet relaxing summers and are all ready to [X]perience the difference that DECA can make! National Officer Team 62 has worked tirelessly throughout the summer preparing for the year, and is ready to serve you! It is our hope to meet as many of you as possible, and can’t wait to see you at your state and regional conferences. Your National Officer Team is here for you; we are a resource for your chapters and members, so feel free to contact us if you have questions, or are looking for ideas on that next project!

While You Were Out… News and Regional Happenings:

The summer has been a busy one! Aside from summer homework, reading, and studying (which I’m sure you’ve all been doing) DECA members had several chances to get involved before the school year started. The 41st Annual Western Region Officer Training Camp (WROTC) was held in sunny Flagstaff, Arizona and members from five states and ten chapters attended. Representatives from Ontario and Michigan made WROTC an exciting time to network with other State teams, and prepare for a promising year.

In addition to WROTC, National DECA also offered their own leadership training experience in Washington, D.C. Members from all over the nation joined in our nation’s capital for four days of intensive leadership training and preparation for the year ahead.

Don’t worry if you missed these conferences… They’ll be plenty more activities to get involved both locally, and on a National level. Talk to your advisor, and National Officer Team about more ways to get involved!

Beyond the Classroom…What is happening in the world of DECA?:

Volume Two, Issue One

Page 2: September, 2007

The MDA Labor Day telethon was held on September 3rd through September 4th, and featured MDA guests, Jerry Lewis, and DECA’s own National President Kelly VanWoerkom. To learn more, contact your National Officers, or check out MDA’s website online!

WRLC (Western Region Leadership Conference) is approaching fast! Travel to beautiful Seattle, Washington on the 17th through the 19th of November and experience inspiring speakers and general sessions, informative corporate tours to over sixty major businesses, and workshops and seminars to prepare you for a successful year!

Check it out! National Officer Team 62 Program of Work Update:

Below are just three of the many initiatives Team 62 has begun work on. Throughout the year, your National Officers will continually work toward completing their Program of Work, in order to improve your experience. Ask your National Officer Team for more information, and learn how to get involved!

I Pledge to Vote (IPTV) – a program which allows member to pledge to vote when they are eligible to do so. The National Officer Team can then approach Senators and Congressmen and convince them to support DECA based on our level of civic involvement. Ask for more information about running IPTV in your own state!

[X]perience Fund – Team 62 is hard at work creating a scholarship for deserving members who can’t afford to attend the ICDC in the spring. Stay tuned for more information, and inquire about creating a similar scholarship in your own state; we’ll give you all the tools to do so!

Boardroom – The Boardroom is a means for DECA members and advisors to connect with individuals who support DECA in the local community. Whether

it be job shadowing, volunteer judges, or in-kind resources, this page on the national site will allow you to get in touch with people who want you to succeed. More to come!

Center Stage! Western Region State Spotlight:

Have you checked out www.wrdeca.org lately? You may have noticed that our regional site has a page which features a State Officer Team from around our region each month. If you’d like your team featured, feel free to send me an [X]perience, and we’ll do our best to feature your team! In addition, in each issue of Hey Western Region DECA! we will be featuring a State Officer Team who has achieved great things. Get out there, show your stuff, and most importantly act as role models for your state associations; your work will not go unnoticed!

From the Top - A Message from our National President; Kelly VanWoerkom:

Hello Western Region! As your National President I look forward to serving you in the upcoming months. I will be working intently with Jordan Villeneuve (your Western Region Vice President) this year to ensure that the Western Region has the best representation possible and the best opportunity to excel in all your endeavors whether related to membership, competition, or chapter and state activities. I hope to have the opportunity to meet with many of you throughout the year. Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments, or just to talk. I am here to serve you and will do my best to make sure you get the best DECA experience this year!

-Kelly Van Woerkom, National President
