The key conventions of a film opening is to introduce characters, genre, and create expectations. Film makers use different techniques to help the audience imagine what a film will be like. Unlike a childs film, such as Kung-Fu Panda, a horror movie will have a simple, non-italic font which is usually red (examples: Cabin in Woods, Paranormal Activity and Splinter). This helps show the seriousness in a movie and the represents blood. 3. In our production we introduce the audience to the setting and character by using establishing shots of the forest. This is important since it helps the audience imagine how isolated the character is and how much danger he may get into. In other horror films, like Scream, it shows a character being isolated, defenceless then murdered, which our movie conforms to. 4. We conformed in the credits in which a movie always shows the name of actors with a higher value first. We originally put the title first before the actors names, but we changed it to show it during the end. We had this idea since many films, like Cabin in the Woods or Scream, do this to add dramatic effect after a death of a character. 5. Film makers use iconography to give a hidden message or an aspect of a character, to do this they use symbolism or give a character an item which they use later on in the film. In our film we gave our villain a mask which is also classified as iconography, an example could be the famous Jigsaw mask from the Saw franchise. We used multiple camera angles and tried experimenting with different and more challenging shots which helps the mise-en-scene. This helps mise-en-scene since the 180 degree isnt broken and we can see the chase from different angles. 6. Our title sequence leaves on a cliff hanger which many horror openings do, weve shown the credits in a suitable format which conforms the horror genre. By leaving it at a cliff hanger questions will run through the audience heads making them more excited for the rest of the film. Silent Hill is a horror movie which also leaves off at a cliff hanger at the opening, making the audience question why has the girl been cursed. We havent conformed with regards to the characters since theyre opposite to the roles in the stereotypes in other movies. Also our location, in a forest conforms since it is eerie.
