1 FROM THE EDITORAbduction reports continue, and multiply, and increase in

bizarreness of story content. Another example (Idaho, 1975).appears in this issue, and the Harry Joe Turner case (Virginia,August 1979) in which a trucker says he was abducted and flownto an alien world will be reported soon. Fred Whiting has completeda preliminary investigation of Turner, with the counsel of several ofus in the Washington, D.C., area. We have reviewed the follow-upinvestigation necessary to check on Turner's reliability as a witness.

' Nothing overtly derogatory about him has been uncovered to date.It is important to understand that investigation consists of far

more than merely obtaining an elaboration of the story from thewitness. A hard and critical look must be taken at the witness*personality, motivation, lifestyle, character, and family dynamics, among other things. Various hypotheses must be explored otherthan that the witness is relating a factual experience; this includeshoax, publicity-seeking, financial gain motive, and mentaldisturbance. Without such investigation — and it must be expertand exhaustive — we are left with nothing but entertaining stories. Are the new-wave abductees only the latest form of "contactees"(combining various ulterior motives and abnormal mental states), oris something far more significant involved? Only meticulousinvestigation will provide meaningful answers.

ANOTHER ABDUCTION BY EXTRATERRESTRIALS?

By Terry A. Hartman(Copyright 1979, Terry A. Hartman; '

It was in August 1977..I had justcompleted a number of radio and TVtalk shows in the Portland and Seattleareas dealing with my hypnosisresearch into the UFO enigma. Beingthe Mutual UFO Network statedirector for Oregon and investigator forthe Center for UFO Studies gave methe opportunity to discuss some of myfindings to the public. As a clinicallytrained hypnotherapist I had the abilityto work with said abductees and todisclose some of the patterns of thesecases to the media. The public ingeneral rarely gets to know what isgoing on with UFO research. So mycontributions on public talk shows arealways welcome.

I was in my study doing some workabout 7:00 PM one evening when thephone rang. It was from a woman by thename of Toni M... She said that sheand her husband experienced a strangephenomenon 2 years before (1975) inthe eastern desert of Oregon while on a3-day camping trip. She explained theywere doing some archaeological digs ina familiar area, but couldn't account for2 hours of missing time and otherunusual happenings. Plus Darryl,Toni's husband, had become extremelydepressed, which resulted in the loss ofhis job as a mechanic and the relocatingto another city. She wanted to know if Icould come to their home in westernPortland, Oregon, the following weekto discuss it. This was the beginning of along and intense investigation.

Both Toni and Darryl are reallyexceptional people: very warm, kind, and considerate. Toni pointed out tome on my initial visit that she has alwaysbeen psychic (clairvoyant), but theexperience in 1975 enchanced thisphenomenon. They told me about astorm and the washing away of the roadon their trip . . . that no one elseexperienced in the area. That they werein their boat on a lake and a water skier

almost hit them as if they did not exist. And that in the present case they gothome 2 hours later than normal on aregular 6-hour trip. (They often go tothis location a number of times a year.)They told me so many interesting thingsabout their lives and this experiencethat I spent almost 7 hours with them. Imentioned to them my hypnosisqualifications and that I'd like to workwith them to uncover Darryl'sdepression and why Toni's ability to bepsychic was enchanced. They didn'tsay yes or no, but that they'd let meknow. I left their house with a feeling ofemptiness. Seven hours of interview,on the brink of a case dealing with somevery unknown forces of metaphysicsand nothing about UFOs. But it was allintriguing.

One week later I received anothercall from Toni saying they decided to dohypnotherapy. When I asked why thehesitation at first, she said they thoughtI might be with the government andwanted time to check me out. Keep inmind many people with abnormalencounters are afraid of ridicule or oflosing their jobs, especially if they feelthe government knows about it. Westarted work the next week.

The first couple of sessions werevery involved and time-consuming. Ihad to keep both Darryl and Toniseparate because I didn't want them tocompare notes with each otherbetween sessions. Plus-I had to takeboth of them to deep levels so I couldinduce amnesia into their recent repliesto the questions. This procedure iscommon as it offers the hypnotist afreshness in their subject's mind beforethe next session. It also eliminates thepossibility of the subject recalling theincident consciously, thus keepingthem from deductive reasoning andtheir own conclusions. After over 30hours of sessions (combined), I came tosome conclusions that I kept to myself

for a couple of weeks. Then I returnedfpr extremely intense work. But first, here are .my preliminary findings:

The location was 82 miles SW of Boise,Idaho, in eastern Oregon along the OwyheeRiver. It was summertime and hot when theywere camping and on their way home theystopped at a small creek to cool off and toallow their pick-up truck to do the same.(They were pulling a boat up a long, windinghill.) As Darryl took his shirt off by the side ofthe truck he noticed a strange plane fly pastthe hillside. The unusual'part'of it was itlooked like a B-52 bomber, with no sound.Toni saw a plane too, but it looked to heV likea supersonic jet, with no sound, Neither oneof them thought enough of their ownsightings to mention it to the.other. Not until Idid hypnosis did this phenomenon come out.

The next thing they both rememberedconsciously was a shiny object sitting acrossthe valley from them on an adjoining hillside.Again, they never mentioned it to each otherlater. Then they got back into their truck andnoticed it started up right away. This wasunusual as when the truck is warm it isdifficult to start. Darryl noticed thetemperature gauge read "cold." (It wouldtake over an hour to cool off on this hot day.)But again no. problem or concern on-theirend.

They drove home with no unusualcircumstances except that the hill they wereclimbing by the creek is quite steep andaccording to other trips there they had todrive in 2nd gear. On this trip they drove up itextremely fast, in 3rd gear. When they gothome they realized it took them longer, bytwo hours, than usual. This didn't makesense to them, expecially driving faster thannormal.

Most of these details I mentionedweren't disclosed until' the hypnosissessions commenced. The next groupof sessions went this way:

After each saw his own interpretation of theplane and the shiny object on the hill, theybegan to walk towards the object as if in atrance, Darryl first, Toni following 10 feet

(continued on next page) ."'.

Page 4: Mufon ufo journal 1979 11. november

(Abduction, Continued). behind. When Darryl reached the object he

touched it and said it felt like teflon. Henoticed a hole in the side of it that wasn'tthere when he arrived. As he crawled up thenewly "materialized" ladder he turned backto look at Toni. She was standing therelooking at him in a daze. At this point in oursessions Darryl was unable to rememberanymore. Toni on the other hand.didn'tremember Darryl or herself going into thehole, but did remember being inside thisobject. (From now on both Toni and Darrylseparately began calling the object a craft, aship.) They both said the door was octagonalwith rounded corners and the color of theship was a dull silver. Darryl still maintainedan amnesia for more details but Toni talkedabout the walls on the inside as very dark, with small lights. Then, she couldn't go anyfurther either.

What happened here is a commonoccurrence. Once the subconsciouspart of the mind (remembering all pastdata) begins to open up, the consciouspart .tries to cover it up. Similar to anautomobile accident where the victimhas a hard time remembering thedetails and has to resort to hypnosis toopen the amnesia. It's our built-indefense mechanism to protect us frommental side effects of an uncomfortableexperience. What I had to do here wasto condition them more intensely touncover the rest. It should be

' mentioned here that while asleep thesubconscious part of the mind is active. Thus Toni experienced somephenomena that were uncomfortable.Darryl, not knowing about the details inher sessions, became concerned. Iassured him we would get it all out in theopen soon so they may rest both on thephysical as well as the mental planes.

One more month went by with meworking on the subconscious level onboth Toni and Darryl. They were nowready for the most intense sessions thatwere a part of this case. In the interimToni continued her hallucinations whileasleep. Once she saw an entity at theend of the bed who called himself"Ahab." He told her he knew her fromher "visit." I told her it was just anhallucination and not to worry. However, she said she knew I wasgetting close to something, or so shefelt. And she was right. There was noway I could know of the outcome and ittook a total of over 46 hours of hypnosison tape with both of them before the

A SIHPLE SKETCH OF THE naTE''~r 'T -ftf1- "V lights, colors, protrusions)

Initial sighting as sketched by Darryl

following information was allowed tocome out:

Toni found herself standing inside the roomwhere all the lights were, when a wall turnedinto a doorway that opened. She walked in.(Keep in mind while this whole experiencehappened they were both in a trance.) Whenshe entered the other room she noticedDarryl lying on his back on a table with hisarms and legs strapped down. The room waswhite in color and had curved walls. Therewere a couple of .chairs by a small tableacross the room and a strange instrumenthanging over Darryl. One wall had a roundwindow that was at first black, then a»if ashade was being drawn up. Outside wereclouds; then, a view of Earth.

On the opposite wall a doorway emerged andslid'Open. Out walked two people. NotEarthlings. One taller than the other; theyranged from 5'2" to 5'8". They were wearinguniforms. Dark grey in color with the samecolor for skin. Their hands exposed wrinklyskin like a dried apple and "balloon"-typefingers. Their faces were of the same skintexture with no features for ears and slits fora mouth, nose, and eyes. They had no visiblehair.

The two people came over to Toni andcommunicated to her with a sound like"buzzing bees." However, like many of thesecases she understood them throughtelepathy or. some form of sound frequencychange. They meant no harm. They did notmean for her to follow Darryl but becauseshe was psychic they thought she couldhandle the experience eventually. This wasthe message they gave her.

The two turned to Darryl and proceeded toexamine him with the machine above him. Itproduced a pin beam of light that they usedto scan his body. The reason was notdisclosed to Toni. Perhaps to find somethingwe don't know about yet. One of the entitiesgrabbed Darryl's right arm and pulledsharply above and below the elbow as tostretch the arm, which caused great pain toDarryl. (He hurt his elbow when young andcould never completely straighten it outsince.) While under hypnosis explaining this,Darryl screamed out "They're hurting my

arm." I relieved him of the pain and he saidthat after informing them of this they tookthe pain away while examining him. He saidthey were friendly but he could not see thembecause his eyes were closed all the time onthe ship. When I asked why, he statedbecause he couldn't open them in the trancehe was in.

This was the extent of the physicalencounter. They were released and returnedto their truck to find the engine cold andstarted for home.

The experience Toni and Darrylhad was rewarding for them. Toni hasbecome more intuitive and grateful;Darryl no longer has trouble with hisarm (they evidently healed it) and moreimportantly found out why he becameso depressed for the 2 years betweenthe experience and our sessions. Hefeels that these entities were so full oflove that it made him upset to see ourplanet the way it is. His subconsciouswas allowing this feeling of sadness toprevail to him only on that level, thusnot knowing the basis for hisdepression. It should be noted here thatbefore our acquaintance Darryl did goto see a psychologist, but was tooemotional for hypnosis therapy. It hasnow been over a year since my lastsession with Toni and Darryl and theyboth are happy and prosperous. Thereis no doubt in their minds of theexperience they had and no doubt in mymind that they believe in thisexperience on both a conscious andsubconscious level. D

MYSTERY DEEPENS IN PILOT DISAPPEARANCE CASE

By Paul Norman(MUFON State Representative for Victoria, Australia)

Since April 1, I have been touringthe United States and Canada, talkingwith UFO Researchers, readingcommercial UFO magazines, watchingTV programs, listening to radiotalkbacks, and making a survey of thepublic with regard to the attitude ofpeople in general and ufologists inparticular concerning the subject ofUFOs. I have found that opinions hereas well as in Australia are easily swayedby journalists and authors who writeabout everything .and are experts onnothing. Thus, much confusion existsnot only in most every subject but inthe field of ufology in particular.

A typical example is that of thepilot Frederick Valentich's dis-appearance over Bass Strait, betweenVictoria and Tasmania, on October 21,1978, as he was being buzzed by aUFO. Although, this was the twentiethknown case, journalists were treatingthe incident as the first ever. Manynewsmen were giving the occurrencetheir own pet twist, demonstrating theirignorance of solid serious cases beingreported from all over the world.

For instance, there was the pettwist of a particular Melbournenewsman, "Anyone who reports a UFOhas been drinking or smoking pot."Naturally, his non-investigative opinionof the last sound heard after the voice ofValentich faded was that of "beer cansbeing rubbed together." This sort ofstatement would be readily snapped upby such non-investigating "experts" asPhil Klass, but does not convey thefacts. Even the officials have stated thesound to be like a "metallic click."Guido Valentich, the pilot's father, waspermitted to hear an edited copy of thetape at the request of the officials for thepurpose of identifying his son's voice. His report to investigators from theMoorabbin-based Victorian UFOResearch Society (VUFORS) confirmsthat the sound was that of a metallic

click.Mr. Valentich, in a recorded

interview before the above-mentionedinvestigators, also stated there was nosound of fear in his son's voice as longas the pilot thought the object wasanother aircraft. During the last fewstatements of the transmission whenhis son realized the object was not anaircraft is the only time his voice brokewith fear. The father stated that anunusual amount of static was heardtoward the end of the transmission.

Repeated efforts of the press andinvestigators have failed to secure thefull tape. The officials desperatelyrefuse to release the tape in full. Theprimary reason for the desired releaseis because this strange event was at firstbeing treated as an ordinary aircraftdisappearance. However, between 7:00and 7:30 on that same evening, otherpilots were flying and tuned to the samefrequency. Several witnesses heard thepilot's final words. One of these pilotsdecided to tip the press. Thus, theworld learned about this strangeencounter.

Two more reports have since beenreceived from aviation sources. One ofthem is that pilot Valentich was on amission for the Defense Department.According to a report from anotherpilot, Valentich was instructed tochange to another frequency for amessage. According to another pilotwho followed through with change offrequency, the message came from theDefense Department, instructingValentich to check on an unknowntarget since he was the only pilot in thatvicinity. It is a confirmed fact that thefirst question from Valentich toMelbourne Flight Service frequency, at7:06, was "Is there any known trafficbelow five thousand?" Perhaps sooneror later, other pilots will decide to speakup and make known to the outsideworld the total dramatic description of

this encounter with the unknown. Two months prior to this fateful

event, UFO reports were coming'fromall over King Island and were beingpassed on to the police and King IslandNews. Victorian and TasmanianInvestigators are still in the process ofinvestigating the origin and build-up ofthese sightings when a slow-movingUFO was reported to be passing amotorist, then disappearing at low levelover a nearby house.

At Maatsuyker Island, a large lighthovered low to the west of the island fornearly. 2 hours, while power in thelighthouse keepers residence isreported to have failed. Erratically, moving lights and daylight sightingswere also being widely reported as farsouth as Hobart, Tasmania. Thesereports have been followed up byinvestigators of the Tasmanian UFOResearch Centre. This famous flapreached its peak on October 21, the dayValentich vanished.

On that same day and nightsomething strange '. was in theMelbourne and Victorian skies. That isthe inescapable conclusion fromstartling files of evidence compiled byinvestigators in that immediate vicinity.Documented interviews with unrelatedpeople from locations up to 150 milesapart told similar stories, of roundobjects, star-fish objects, and two silvercigar-shaped objects moving slowly inthe sky with no apparent means ofpropulsion, no wings, and no sound.

Here are some reports fromobservers. Names are on file with theVictorian UFO Research Society andthe Tasmanian UFO Research Centre:

Currie, King Island, 2 p.m., Oct.21: A young housewife was sunbathingin her back yard. The sky was clear, except for one large cloud directlyoverhead. Out of this cloud came anobject similar to a huge golf ball about aquarter size of the moon. The object

(continued on next page)

(Disappearance, Continued)was white or silver in color and movedslowly to the west toward the sea. Shethought it most likely a satellite. However, it stopped at an angle of 70degrees to the ground, then startedmoving back in the direction fromwhence it came. Mrs. K. watched forapproximately 10 minutes, then had toleave and saw no more of it and thoughtno more about it until the pilot storybroke the next day.

Corio, Victoria, 3 p.m., Oct. 21:Less than an hour after the King IslandUFO was seen, 12 tennis players oncourts near Geelong, together with anumber of cricket players, watchedtwin cigar-shaped objects movingslowly from west to east. The objects, described as silvery in color andconnected together with two silverpipes, were moving with no visible*means of propulsion, no sound, and nowings. The UFOs were first seen at anangle of 75 degrees, moving west toeast. Size of both objects was estimatedas slightly smaller than jumbo jets.

Cape Qtway, Victoria, 4:15 p.m.,Oct. 21: One hour after these twinUFOs were last seen, Mrs. G. ofGeelong, and her 14-year old son weredriving to their weekender on CapeOtway. When a silver glint caught theireye, they looked up and saw two silvercigar-shaped objects moving slowlyfrom the southwest. Mrs. G. at firstthought the twin objects were gliders, but after noting they had no wings shestopped the car to step out for a betterlook. The UFOs remained in closeformation, with one slightly behind theother. The observers were puzzled bythe precision flying. The two objectsmaintained the same distance fromeach other during the entire period ofobservation. The size was estimated asabout that of light aircraft. If these werethe same UFOs as reported nearGeelong 1 hour earlier, they were flyingat a higher elevation and too high forany connection to be seen. Suddenly, the objects changed color to white, made a sweeping curve to the north andsped away. The mother and son couldhear no sound.

Cape Otway, Victoria, 6:45 p.m.,Oct. 21: Just 21 minutes before pilotValentich told Melbourne FlightService he was being buzzed by a UFO,

6

Roy Manifold , of Melbourne, photographed on 35 mm film an objecthurtling in a blur of speed and mist outof the ocean near Cape Otwaylighthouse. All modes of computeranalysis were used to gain data, including edge enhancement, colorcontouring, digitizing, computerizingand filtering. Analysis was made byGround Saucer Watch and critiqueissued by William H. Spaulding, GSWDirector. Publication of the photobrought the officials out of their cornerfor the umpteenth debunking attempt:"The photo showed a cloud or a puff ofsmoke." VUFORS advisors quicklyexploded the hasty announcement. The object appears only in the last sixpictures taken at roughly 20-secondintervals. The length of these intervalsis confirmed by the setting sun'sposition. In the last picture the so-calledcloud is already 9 degrees into theframe. This means it would have spedinto the shot at up to 200 mph—impossible for a cloud on a calm day.

Altona (Western Suburb ofMelbourne), 6:50 p.m.: A doctor and hiswife observed a round object withbeams of light toward Geelong aboutthree times larger than the evening star. They watched the object for only 5minutes thinking no more about it untilthey read about the pilot's remarks thenext day.

Near Cape Otway over Bass Straitfrom 7:06 to 7:12: Frederick Valentich'ssighting and disappearance.

Frankston (Southern suburb ofMelbourne), 7:10 p.m., Oct. 21: AFrankston widow, her 14-year-old son,16-year-old daughter and friend, Janie, age 16, were motoring to a property tothe south of Frankston, when theynoted a glowing object to the southeast.Their impression was the exhaust of asky rocket, although, the object wasstationary. The sighting occurred justbefore darkness. The sky was clear. The color appeared to be a mixture ofred, pink, and white. The five observersestimated its size as about one-quarterof the moon at a 30 degree angle. Theviewers lost sight of the object whenthey turned onto another road. Themother said that at the time of sightingshe did not realize it was a UFO, butfound later that other people had seenthe same' thing and had thought no

more about it until news of the missingpilot became known the following day.

Brooklyn (Western suburb ofMelbourne), 7:10 p.m., Oct. 21: BankManager, Mr. C. Morgan, and othersobserved a star-fish shaped object overthe Melbourne-Geelong road. Theynoticed green flickering lights at oneend. They have the impression thatthey had watched the object beingdescribed by Valentich.

Ormond (Southern Suburb ofMelbourne), 7:15 p.m., Oct. 21: Mrs. G.McNiece was standing in WicklowStreet, when she noticed srahge lightsto the northeast. She was busydirecting her children across a busystreet and only had a brief look. Thelights appeared to fall or were turned offfrom top to bottom. They looked like"silver rain." At first glance the lights

• appeared to be arranged in shape of acigar.

Elwood (Southern MelbourneSuburb), 7:15 p.m., Oct. 21: Mr. JamesMortimer reported a red object movingover the bay in a south to" westdirection. He called attention to his cabdriver who agreed it was not a knownobject:

Ringwood (Eastern Suburb ofMelbourne), 8:00 p.m., Oct. 21: Reportby John Thompson of VUFORS: Atabout 8:00 p.m., David and Martin ofRingwood were out playing with theirwalkie-talkies down at the end of 'theirstreet. They were no more than 50yards apart when Kim, who wasstanding on the rise of a hill, noticed astar-shaped object in the NW at a verylow altitude estimated at 2,500-3,000feet. The object moved slightly fasterthan an aircraft on an approach run, heading in a NE direction where itdisappeared behind a grove of tall pinetrees. During the observation bothwitnesses recall that a sound like a lowpulsating hurri was associated with theobject, but once out of view was notaudible any longer. Each of theircommunicators became inundatedwith static so that even within 3 minuteswalking distance they were inoperable. The object appeared from theirdescription to have bright white lightsplaced intermittently at each tip of thestar-fish-shaped object and at variouspoints along the arcs to the tips. Thehull itself had irregularly placed

HUMANOID ENCOUNTERS IN MALAYSIA

By Ahmad Jamaludin(West Malaysia MUFON Representative)

UFO occupants or "humanoids"present themselves in various shapesand sizes,,as do the UFOs themselves.Worldwide reports have from time totime given rise to new types or speciesof humanoids, from small wingedcreatures to huge hairy creatures. Butfrom reports as early as 1897 it hasbecome clear that one type — the 4feet-5 inches Oriental type — has beenconsistent. They were seen widely inFrance during the great 1954 UFOwave and continued to be sighted as

recently as 1979 in South Africa. While other countries have been

experiencing close encounters withhumanoids of diversified forms, I wouldlike to draw attention to the reports in',Malaysia where humanoid encountershave been confined to only one type —tiny entities measuring from 3 inches to6 inches in height. Though reports ofthe other UFO categories bearsimilarity to the global sightings, encounters with humanoids in Malaysiaon the record so far are in a class of

their own. There has not been a singlereported incident of encounters withUFO occupants measuring taller than 6inches in height. If is also to be notedthat there has not been a single case of aUFO measuring greater than 3 feet indiameter landing - on Malaysian soil. These observations consti tute apuzzle, and if any explanations can begiven it is. hoped that some relationship'with the global UFO landings may give aclue to the UFO phenomena.

(Disappearance, Continued)rectangles emitting all the visible colorsof the spectrum with a soft glow effect. They both distinctly remember onebright light which appeared in themiddle of the underside.

Queensclift, Victoria (Across baysouthwest of Melbourne), 9:00 p.m.;Mrs. Barbara Bishop reported anobject which appeared to resemble aferris wheel spinning in the sky.

Warrnambool, Victoria (West ofCape Orway), 9:00 p.m., Oct. 21: Twowitnesses observed a light about 4 or 5times the size of the evening star in thenortheastern sky. The object wasdescribed as being orange-red in colorand to be hovering at a height of 75degrees. It remained stationary forseveral minutes, then suddenlychanged color to yellow and movedrapidly to a 10 degree position in thesoutheast, where it hovered again for afew minutes before speeding away tothe south.

Blackwood, Victoria (Northeast ofCape Otway), 10:30 p.m., Oct. 21:Report by John Thompson: Mr. andMrs. C. Rossito, Mr. and Mrs. R.Petersen, and Mr. and Mrs. G. Williamswere at a holiday house in Blackwood.Mrs. Petersen together with the otherswere watching TV in the lounge room. The front of the room has largewindows, out of which they observed

an extremely bright light in the east. The light was bright as a spot light, witha small red light to the left and a smallergreen light to the right. Mrs. Petersennoticed the object for a period of only 5minutes through the window. It was atan azimuth of 20-25 degrees and madeno sound. At this particular time thetelevision began to malfunction. Theywere unable to control the picturerolling no matter how much they tried.

At approximately 11:10 p.m., allthree parties observed the object in aposition of 90-95 degrees. Mrs.Petersen and Mrs. Rossito becamequite fearful of the object now that ithad stayed for so long and not changedposition. Mrs. Williams was notaffected. They all then watched theobject for a period of 15 minutes. Theyall state that during the event the objecthovered in one position then at timeswould appear to go up arid down, andside to side with a very rapid speed. They all state that the object was thenemitting beams colored red/green inthe form of a dotted line. The lines weredirected to the earth's surface butdisappeared seconds later. Each beamwas estimated to be 100 feet long. Stillawake, they observed that at approx.1:30 a.m. the object had moved again toa position of 45 degrees still hovering. The object had changed shape to theform of a cricket bat, still white in color,

then later into a long straight line, white •in color and quite thin. Mrs. Rossitoobserved this, then turned her headaway for a second and the object wasgone.

Next morning, all members were ina cheer fu l mood. During theobservation the kitchen and loungeglobes blew out for no apparent reason. The TV was switched off early, due to itserratic behavior. Their horses in theback lot were more restless than nor-mal. After the incident, Mrs. Rossitowas depressed and suffered wateringeyes, aching ears, irritated nose, and asevere headache. The other two ladiesfelt normal, except that Mrs. Williamsfelt an extreme impulse that she shouldnot leave the house that Sunday after-noon. She did not want to leave.

VUFORS is in receipt of at least 50good sighting reports made before, during, and after the event whichoccurred on that fateful day. Sinceinvestigation of these sightings requiresmany miles of travel over severalhundred square miles of the area andsince investigators must bear the fullcost of these investigations out of theirown pockets, several months may passbefore a full report is possible and theextent and meaning of this series ofincidents will be known, if ever.

(Malaysia, Continued)The following alleged encounters,

the full stories of which are incompletesince the principal witnesses cannot belocated, are listed below.

morning saw a small UFO and tiny 6-inch tall creatures. The boys soonreported it to the headmaster and sinceit occurred in the school premises, thenews broke out and soon' the wholeschool were combing the area lookingfor the creatures. One small burntpatch on the ground was found. TheUFO was gone.

CASE 2: Gambang near Kuantan,1973

Two schoolboys claimed to haveseen tiny humanoids only 3-inches tallin the school compound. It is said thatone of the creatures was actually.caught by the boys, which attracted theattention of a teacher. He arrived intime to see it before the tiny creaturefinally managed to escape.

CASE 3: Bukit Mertajam, 1973A group of boys playing football in

a school field sighted a small UFOlanded nearby. From it emerged tinycreatures which immediately one of theboys tried to catch. A beam of light wasfired at the boy's hand. The UFO flewaway.

CASE 4: Ipoh, 1973A small UFO carrying tiny

humanoids landed in a school field.Several schoolboys who sighted itexcitedly called their teachers. Theycame just too late to see the objectspeeding away.

CASE 5: Miri, Sarawak, 1973Several boys saw a humanoid

about 6 inches tall wearing a white suitcutting a fence wire with an intensebeam of light. They tried to catch it butit was lost in the bushes. No UFO wassighted.

CASE 6: Miri, Sarawak, 1973Several people on vacation along

the beach sighted a group of tiny beingswearing white suits. There were aboutsix or seven of them. They wore no

mask and resembled humans exceptfor their tiny size. This group consistedof possibly males and females. Thefemales were notable because of thelong hair. An attempt to catch themfailed. No saucer was sighted.

CASE 7: Bukit Mertajam, 1979A small UFO landed on a field near

some boys. A boy tried to catch a 3-inchcreature that emerged from it. It fired abeam that temporarily paralyzed hisright arm. The UFO then flew away.

There were not less . than 7reported landings in Malaysia from thefirst known landing in 1970 throughMay 1979. From these reports therewere,5 cases of close encounter withtiny humanoids and 2 other casesreported, from East Malaysia but noUFO was sighted. The creaturesmeasured, in all cases, either 3 inchesor 6 inches tall. All were equipped with atype of ray gun. They were described aswell dressed in one-piece suits. Somehad slightly larger head and round eyes. The 3-inch humanoids sometimes hadtwo antenna-like structures protruding'from the head. Case 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7occurred in West Malaysia, all reportedby school children and all landings tookplace in school premises.

There were 3 more probableencounters with tiny humanoids inMalaysia, but unfortunately the originof the incidents cannot be traced. Onerecent case, a probable landing, occurred on May 26,1979, near Kulimwhere the witnesses, 3 boys and 2adults, claimed to have sighted a smallUFO hovering a few feet above theground perhaps in an attempt to landsince its three landing gears werealready down. As the witnesses tried totouch the object an intense light rayshone into their eyes which temporarilyblinded them. This shows that the smallUFO was intelligently controlled frominside. Considering its small, size, estimated about 2 feet in diameter, theUFO occupants if any.inside wouldhave to measure about 3 inches tall to fitcomfortably in the object.

Of the 9 reported landings orencounters with humanoids, 7 casesoccurred in broad daylight. Only 2landings were known to have takenplace at night. There have been noreports of encounters with UFOoccupants after dawn. Almost all of theUFOs sighted close range on theground or hovering close to the groundmeasured on the average less than 3feet in diameter.

UFO SIGHTED IN THESOUTH OF CORDOBA

City and country of incident: CordobaProvince, ArgentinaDate of incident: May 5, 1979Name of paper and date of clip: Clarin,May 22, 1979City and country of paper: BuenosAires, ArgentinaCredit: Jane ThomasIn Los Molinos dam, Dept. ofCalamuchita, Cordoba, an amateurwho was trying to photograph ahummingbird saw how a UFO suddenlyappeared in his field. He pressed theshutter with much presence of mindand thus obtained what may be the bestsnapshots ever taken of a UFO. Themysterious navigator is shaped like ahat and has three openings, presumably for observations.According to experts it is a "flyingsaucer" which may be manned or not.but depends on a "mother ship" whichpossibly finds itself over Argentinaterritory in an unknown mission.

Cordoba (From our agency) - LuisFerreyra, a local miner, wasphotographing a hummingbird flyingbetween the foliage near the Los

Molinos dam, Dept. of Calamuchita, when a UFO suddenly appeared in hisviewfinder. The man, with greatpresence of mind, pressed the shutterseveral times and it is possible that thephotographs obtained are the best andmost valid as a document since thestrange appearances began to berecorded the world over. The strange"encounter" occurred on the 5th of thismonth, but Ferreyra only handed thenegatives to the afternoon paper"Cordoba" yesterday (to whosec o u r t e s y C l a r i n ' owes t h e i rreproduction), which permitted theobservation with exceptional fidelity, ofthe characteristics of a vehicle whichcould have come from the cosmos.

Ferreyra said that around 0300 p.m. ofthe 5th, with a Minolta fitted with a500mm lens, he was trying to follow thefast zigzag of a hummingbird againstthe sun, when unexpectedly a UFOentered his field of vision.Without hesitating, he took severalsnapshots, although he added theappearance had made him nervous. "Icannot estimate the altitude at whichthe mysterious object was flying, whichwas of a metallic color. It suddenly tiltedat an angle of 45 degrees with respect tothe earth and was silently lost in space. That was all." Upon consulting some

students of the phenomena whichthrow mankind into conjectures, theyexplained that at first sight thephotograph is authentic and thesuspicion of a trick may be ruled out, although it will be necessary to studythe negatives. . . .

A detailed observation of the objectphotographed in the Los Molinos damshows two small openings over theouter edge of the wing and another —c i r c u l a r — in the b o t t o m .Morphologically, the craft resembles ahat and seems to have been built withopaque materials. The space traveleronce again opens a discussion which, with this new testimony, assumesfascinating intensity. The obligedquestion is: What do UFOs want in theArgentine sky? One of the hypothesesalready mentioned refers to theparticular geographical position of ourcountry, far away from places where anatomic holocaust might occur. Butwhile conjectures abound, theremarkable quality of the photographsis eloquent in itself, as much as the storyof the man who wanted to catch ahummingbird on film and ended up bycapturing a flying saucer.

IMFCSf̂ OAT

(Malaysia, Continued)UFOs that were sighted in the air

were usually of large size. There havebeen reports of a disc-shaped UFO asbig as a house flying over the hillycountry in East Malaysia and a longelliptical object like a neon light was alsosighted high in the sky.

UFO sightings near or withinschool compounds have been aworldwide occurrence. It is notsurprising, therefore, that most of theMalaysian landings occurred in or nearthe school area. UFOs, as suspected bysome researchers, have shownconsiderable interest in schools by thefrequent sightings recorded. InMalaysia the case may not be soconsidering the nature of the land. From the air Malaysia offers half adozen types of landing grounds, namelyjungles, rubber and oil palmplantations, rice fields, tin-mining areas,

and football fields. For a landing thethick jungles and rubber plantations donot offer enough clearance. Rice fieldsand tin-mining areas are almostisolated, and if there were any landingsmost would go unnoticed (consideringalso the small size of the UFO). Theonly landing spot that would attractattention in the event of a landing wouldbe a field.

Why do Malaysian encounters (theUFO and the humanoids) come only intiny sizes when compared to otherparts of the world? Why do most

. landings occur in the daytime when allother worldwide landing reports usuallyhappen at night? If deception is part ofthe UFO phenomenon then their tinysize may allow them to easily escapeunnoticed. Since there have been noreports of encounters with bigger orhuman-size humanoids in the darkhours, then we again ask, why do most

landings have to be conducted in theday time?

It has been observed that UFOswere mainly attracted to the fracture-zone areas of high seismic activity. Infact it can be seen that earthquake-freeareas or countries have fewer UFOreports compared to the bulk of theUFO sightings reported originatingfrom earthquake zones or areas thathave records of or have "felt" even theslightest earth tremors.

Malaysia is an earthquake-freecountry. The areas of gravity andmagnetic anomalies which UFOs mayuse to operate so excellently is lackingin this region. Is the tiny size acompensation for the maneuverabilityto land and take off on a magneticallystable area?

MISSOURI TRACE CASE FOLLOW-UPBy Ted Phillips

(The original report appeared in MUFON UFO Journal No. 135, May 1979.)

I have waited to submit my reportonly because I had hoped to haveanalysis results. The following mayprovide additional information: Asketch of the landing site with the grid;soil profiles taken across the site N - Sand W - E; a sketch indicating the flightpath and turns described by the objectand the wind direction at the surfaceand at 3,000 feet altitude.

The only objection I have to thepublished report is the mention of"tripod circles" which is somewhatmisleading. In the soil profile there was

no indication of any depressions in thesite. Compression tests were made intwo of the areas and there was noindication of weight. The three areasmentioned were somewhat drier andwere barren but nothing to indicatelanding imprints.

When I arrived at the site I took 31color photographs and 19 color slides ofthe landing site and surrounding area. Anumber of photographs were taken ofthe site from various directions showingthe grid in place. A transit was used tolay off a grid with 1-foot square

increments. The site was thenmeasured and sketched and theadditional photographs taken. Thetransit was then used to take a soilprofile across the site N - S and W - E.Bearings were then taken for the flightpath, turns described by the object, andposition of the witnesses.

Soil samples were located withinthe grid and taken in l/2 inch increments.Samples were taken at the followinglocations:

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 6 (EFE) -Leaders of the Center for SpaceResearch traveled today to this city toinvestigate a UFO which last nightparalyzed the Pampulhas district, 5km

from Belo Horizonte.'According to two witnesses, policemenfrom a patrol car, the UFO landed on afield near the military school of BeloHorizonte and remained on the groundfor ll/2 minutes. Policemen VanderCampos and Benedito Mantos, of thehighway patrolling unit, said they sawthe object at less than 50m, it spewedfire through a "kind of turbines on theground and gave off intense red- andorange lights."They added that, 'the car's enginestopped as well as the radio, for 55seconds. The strong light from theobject did not permit them to seewhether "there was someone observingthrough the large number of portholesthe craft had," and the vehicle took off"vertically at great speed."

Thetestimony was obtained by police of theIV Regional Unit when it was on aroutine patrol in its jurisdiction. InBigand, Pedro Celotto reported that inhis field located to the west of an urbanarea, a UFO had landed on a soybeanplantation. Once there, police couldverify that a certain area of theplantation was burned in a circle ofsome 8 meters diameter. On beingquestioned, some residents said thatearly last Saturday a luminous objectstarted to move in the sky. Someclaimed that several cars along NationalRoute 33 had their engines stoppedwithout any apparent reason. A relativeof Celotto said he had seen an "intenselight that blinded me" a few minutesprior to the alleged landing. Earthsamples and calcinated grass weretaken from the spot and sent to Rosariofor analysis. It is expected that resultswill throw some light on this event, which is the cause of excited commentsin an extensive area of the Caserosdepartment. The "Daily Bulletin"of Legaspi, in the province of Albay352km to the SE of this capital says theresidents flowed into the streets to seethe object and marveled at the range ofcolors from the flash it gave off, until itdisappeared. The paper says themanager of a radio station reported thecraft had an "extraterrestrial bright-ness" and that if projected in theperspective, it had the size of an adult'sfist. This is the second time a UFO wasseen in the Philippines in one week.Last Sunday an American scientist saidthat he and hundreds of villagers saw aUFO fly over the area near the highestpeak of the Philippines. That UFOseemed to have two unfolded antennasand the scientist said he saw it throughhis binoculars and that he thought hesaw figures moving inside.According to observers, these figureshad a human or humanoid shape. At agiven time it seemed as if they weregreeting people through the portholeswith their hands, "very similar to smalloctopus tentacles," claimed theflustered neighbors.

UFO SECRECY UPDATEBy Larry W. Bryant

NO UFORESIGHT IN CONGRESS

If you're unhappy about theFederal Government's handling (ormishandling) of its role in UFOlogy, allyou have to do is make your viewsknown to your elected representative, right? Wrong. Expecting yourcongressman to take any positiveaction toward resolving the UFO.controversy is like expecting him andhis colleagues to produce a practical, timely solution for the nation's energyproblem.

True, a few individual represent-atives and senators in times past haveshown some inclination to take a closelook at the subject. Once, in fact, theHouse held a so-so hearing (1968) to tapthe scientific community's interest. Butby and large, no congressional member(or body of members) wants to get hishands messy over such a politicallyexplosive issue as UFOlogy.

Where does this leave the averagecitizen who would welcome morecandor, more verifiable information on.the continuing role of the ExecutiveBranch in UFO research? Aside fromefforts of privately funded UFOresearch groups and the even lessregular product of those investigativereporters who dare brave the murkydepths of the UFO vortex, youraverage .citizen has little to gain byputting the UFO question up for con-gressional scrutiny. This sad state ofgovernmental responsiveness to agenuinely perplexing social andtechnological phenomenon is reflectedin the recent inability of two Virginiasolons — Sen. Harry F. Byrd, Jr., andRep. Joseph L. Fisher — to give anymore than lip service to the need forcompelling the Central IntelligenceAgency to cut the cagyness and deliverthe delicacies. Oh, they'll give you afairly prompt reply to your letterrequesting their intercession, but they

draw the line at any proposed actionbeyond t h e i r se rv ice as acorrespondence "tickler." . . . Thankyou for writing, dear citizen. Weappreciate hearing your views. (And,between the lines, please remember usin November.)

What can be done about this all-too-typical apathy? Not much, exceptmaybe once in a while publicizing it inthe pages of the UFO press. Meantime, until a congressman or a member of hisimmediate family is abducted byUFOnauts, or until the body of "hardevidence" now being sought by certainprivate researchers materializes with abang, Congress might just as well bewritten off as a waste of time and efforton the part of any UFO-oriented citizenwho seeks its guidance or assistance.

On the other hand, at the slimprospect that the Rip van Winkles onCapitol Hill will be roused by anoutraged citizenry, MUFON standsready to relay, in the pages of thisjournal, your concern about theirapathy. If you do decide to contact yourcongressman about a specific UFOincident or about the UFO fiasco of theExecutive Branch or about the future ofgeneral UFO research; and if you doreceive more than a form-letter reply,by all; means keep us informed. We'replanning to do a comprehensive studyof congressional interest in UFOlogy, and we'd be pleased to receive anydocumentation bearing on the subject. We hope to summarize the results ofthis study in a later installment of thiscolumn.

CITIZENS' ACCESS TO NSARECORDS SUFFERS SETBACK

On October 29, 1979, a three-judge Federal appeals court ruledunanimously in a freedom-of-information case that records of theU.S. National Security Agency (NSA)

generally are so sensitive to the statusquo of "national security" that they canbe afforded special dispensation fromthe scrutiny of any adversary actionpursued under terms of the U.S.Freedom of Information Act.

What does this portend for thoseof us intent on using the FIA to ferretfrom NSA closets a well of thus-farundisclosed UFO data? Well, if theappeals court decision is upheld by theU.S. Supreme Court, we can expect tosee that well dry up before our veryeyes. For what the decision does is todeny FIA requestors the right to have aFederal District Court judge inspectcontested records to determine if theytruly represent what the agency saysthey do in terms of any potential threatto national security that their fullrelease might pose.

It's perfec t ly permissible, according to the decision, for the judgeto accept at face value the swom-in-secret protestations of agency officialsthat a contested record must remainunreleasable if court ordered release, inthe officials' opinion, could endangerthe security of the United States. Theplaintiff in such a case, without-beingable to review (or have the courtreview) the records, now must prove tothe court's satisfaction that theirrelease would not endanger nationalsecurity. In other words, the onus is onthe requestor, not the agency, toconvince the court that the records'release would be in the public interest.

One hopes that the plaintiffs in thiscruicial case will press their appeal.Meantime, you can bet that any effortto compel the National SecurityAgency to release its withheld UFOrecords will be met with renewedresistance.

Indeed, it's not hard to imaginethat the Central Intelligence Agency willtransfer its unreleased UFO records to

BOOK REVIEWS

The UFO Handbook by AllanHendry (Doublcday, 1979), 384 p.,$8.95 pb.

(Reviewed by David K. Hackett,Director of ORION, and Richard Hall)

.. As we begin the fourth decade ofthe UFO mystery, we :find thecontroversy has changed little.Thousands of. UFO books have beenpublished; alleged factual accounts, debunking analyses, and religious andcult texts. Virtually every book in printhas-had one'goal: to convince thereader that its premises hold the validtruths on UFOs. With all that "truth" inprint,. why do we still have a UFOmystery? . The phenomenon is anemotional one,.and many people wantto believe despite the facts. The years ofstudy have shown that most (85-90%)UFQs a re m i s i d e n t i f i e d o rmisperceived natural or man-madeevents.: It has been very. time-consuming to sift through thesereports. Allan Hendry's new book isdesigned to help the reader identifythese sightings, and free the ufologist todevote more time to the 10-15% of thesightings that may hold.the key to themystery; or that may perhaps prove tobe more complex misperceptions.

. The. UFO Handbook, then, is notanother UFO. reader full of juicy, incredible stories. It is a text book, designed to help people explain whatthey are misperceiving and distinguishUFOs f r o m IFOs. E x c e l l e n tphotographs combined with a text thatconcisely explains what 30 years ofUFO research, and ll/2 years of Mr.Hendry's -intensive research, has.discovered. While neither this book orany other book is likely to lay the UFOquestion to rest, at least some rationalillumination is shed on this dark cornerof our culture.

Do not expect platitudes designedto please the avid UFO reader or to sellthe book. This book is not likely togarner priase from UFO hobbyists andsupporters of "pet theories," because itis brutally frank in its assessment of thecompetence of witnesses andinvestigators alike. However, it is

14

destined to become the premier text onthe UFO phenomena.

Mr. Hendry uses to excellentadvantage his investigations to pointout the proper and thorough way tohandle sightings. There are manylessons to be learned from the IdentifiedFlying Objects. His drought ofspeculation is much appreciated withrespect to the monsoon of hypothesesbeing pushed elsewhere. His onechapter on speculation reveals him tolean toward a Jungian hypothesis, which provides a great working latitudefor a skeptically curious investigator! The chapter on tools of the trade is amost valuable layman's guide to theseoft misunderstood tools. As herhetorically queries, why, after 30years, have I had to amass theseresource lists. But it is a sign of thetimes and the public's changed attitudethat Mr. Hendry is one of the first to beable to devote full time to UFOresearch. There may be no more toUFOs than misperceptions, hysteria, and a powerful desire to believe, butregardless, our ignorance must beconfronted, and this book does itsquarely, and head on. Perhaps thenext 30 • years will see the mysterysolved. Towards that end, this textcannot help but be of use to "ufologists"of all bents, and I recommend it highly.-David K. Hackett

The UFO Handbook encompass-es under one cover information aboutpractically every stimulus that can (and, unfortunately, often does) cause a falseUFO report by unsophisticatedobservers. In that respect, it is avaluable compilation both for thegeneral public and for the amateurinvestigator. Mr. Hendry rightlystresses the generally poor qualityinvestigation work done by well-meaning "ufologists," and he advocatescareful and thorough investigation, providing many useful suggestions tothat end. His section on "tools" forinvestigators is good and highlyappropriate. All this is to his credit.

The other side of the coin is thatthose of us with considerably moreexperience will find little that is new andwill have covered this ground long ago.In fact, at NICAP in the 1960's we keptlogs of IFO possibilities and routinelychecked such things as advertising

planes. Also, descriptions of commonIFOs have appeared in the MUFONField Investigator's Manual since 1975.

More bothersome to many-"veterans" is the fact that Mr. Hendryhas spent so much time and effort onlyto rediscover (as has been well-established for years) that most reportsbecome IFOs. By now it should be clearthat the real problem for science, if any, lies in the well-articulated, highstrangeness UFOs. Why hasn't theCenter for UFO Studies used itsprecious resources to delve into thehard-core cases instead of dwelling onIFOs?

To some extent, this criticism maybe unjust, because it is all too true thatlow-grade reports (and amateurishinvestigation) have obscured seriousevidence all along, and the IFO problemwill not go away. This will undoubtedlybe the definitive work on IFOs, and onmethods of investigation in general. The codification of IFOlogy for ageneral audience clearly is worthwhile.

Mr. Hendry implies that carelessand inexper t inves t iga tors areresponsible for a l lowing manyexplainable reports to masquerade asUFOs in the published literature.Indeed, his criticisms of "ufologists" areharsh to an extreme (incidentallytarring all of us with a broad brush). Thebook strongly challenges "Ufologists"and exhorts them to clean up their act.On that point, I couldn't agree more.--RichardHall

By Ann Druffel We're All in This Together

Last year in August a valuedresearcher and friend, Bobbie AnnSlate, was taken from our midst. Now, afew weeks ago, another bright soulsped her way toward eternity.

She was not known to the UFOresearch field, but because she wasgenerous, wise, and loving, shecontributed to the wisdom of many. Her passing points up a cogent factwhich we should understand andremember — that there are numerouspersons oh this earth who, although notinvolved in our field, are neverthelesscontributing toward our gradualcomprehension of what UFOs 'mightbe.

The question of UFOs is not theprovince of investigators and scientistsalone. They are everyone's problem.Fifty-seven percent of the Americanpopulation are now convinced thatUFOs exist, and the percentage climbshigher each year. There must be someoverwhelming reason why the subjectof UFOs is important to the majority ofpeople. More and more researchers arebeginning to suspect that UFOs mightbe inextricably linked with ' thecontinuing evolution of the humanspecies.

Mary Terri Taylor was a radio andTV writer for many years and also, fortwo decades, taught film writing tohundreds of students of varyingdegrees of ability in the Hollywood(California) High adult educationprogram. After retiring, she continuedfor ten more years participating as tutorand guide in private writing workshops.Under her instruction, many buddingwriters emerged into the mainstream ofHollywood's entertainment industries.

Mary, being wise, was a specialperson. Her mind was always open tonew ideas. A staunch ChristianScientist, she nevertheless opened her

, heart to people whose lifestyles were

vastly different from her own — and to acertain UFO researcher who broughtto her class ideas for scripts rangingfrom time travel to intradimensionalvisitations. All ideas were, to Mary, worthy of consideration, not only asvehicles for visual entertainment, butalso as carriers for man's eternalpreoccupation with his own nature andthe reasons for his existence.

When she left us, Mary was a fresh-faced septuagenarian whose snowywhite hair was always coiffed incharming curls, setting off her Irish blueeyes and smiling pink cheeks. A tiny, compact person, her clothes fitted herpersonality — bright, modern, andattractive. She was the veryembodiment of a cheerful, giving soul.

I remember her best, however, as apseudo-stern, demanding teacher -whowas satisfied only when her studentsgave her their best efforts. No episodein our association together pointed upthese qualities better than our worktogether on a UFO screenplay entitled"The Red Hand of the O'Neills." When

. I first wrote the screenplay, I entitled it"The Trouble with an Irishman." Itsmain character was a scientist of Irishancestry who was struggling alone withthe knowledge that UFOs weremalicious travelers from man's future. The man was full of troubles, for all thefactions of society he attempted to alert— colleagues, local authorities, government officials, even family andfriends — none believed him. In the firstaspects of his "trouble," the plotelements were probably pure sciencefiction, but in the second, his troubleswere all too real, as any UFOresearcher can testify.

Mary did not differentiate between .the science fiction elements and thoseparts of the plot which were more trueto life. All the plot elements seemed, toher, to blend into a "good story." I do

not know to this day whether she wasprivately convinced that UFOs werereal; she encouraged me nonetheless. She helped me mold the filmplay intothe tightest, most dramatic formpossible and afterward contributed herstrength and personal contacts towardmarketing it. Now, several weeks afterher death, it seems her efforts were notin vain, for the script is now in the handsof a capable Hollywood agent whounderstands and values the ufologicalelements of its plot. :

Mary did not concern herself withthe intricacies of UFO research. Yetshe generously gave of her time andtalent in this particular project. Why?Perhaps she instinctively realized thatthe subject matter, even though indramatic form, u;as important. If it firedthe imagination and determination ofone of her students to spend a yearwriting the "Red Hand of the O'Neills,"did she, perhaps, begin to think that thesubject was not merely wild fancy?Mary, therefore, represents anessential cross section of humanitywhose help we researchers desperatelyneed. Scientists cannot solve the UFOproblem alone. They must necessarilydepend on the backing of largeelements of the population whoseinterest in the subject might at best bepe r iphe ra l and unc lea r , butnevertheless intense. There are severalreasons why this is so.

The first reason is our desperateneed for funding. Monies will not comefrom dogmatic, official science. Theirworld view is simply not yet able toaccept UFOs. Funding will not comeeither from government channels, those few functionaries who possessproof tha t UFOs exist c l ingpossessively to their imperfectknowledge. They will not make it publicbecause they cannot bear the thought

UFO INVESTIGATIONCAN HAMS HELP?

By David L. Dobbs, K8NQN

You bet they can! Amateur radiooperators and UFO investigators gotogether like ham and eggs. A fewinvestigators are hams, of course. Butyou'd be surprised at how manyamateurs are interested in UFOs. TheMUFON UFO nets are a vital part ofthe organization's activities. Netmembers are privy to a great deal ofinformation which never reaches therest of you, and we're going to dosomething about that. But how canradio amateurs help you as aninvestigator? By communicating, ofcourse.

Long distance contacts on the low(short wave) bands are far from themost useful means. In the larger citiesand many smaller ones, repeatersoperating in the two meter FM amateurradio band make it possible for hams incars, open areas, or walking the dog tocommunicate with others over a multi-county area. With their hand-heldtransceivers, they can access thetelephone network through autopatchcapability, or contact someone to dothis for them. The implications forsighting, tracking, and reporting UFOsis obvious. At any hour of the day ornight, a large number of potentialwitnesses can be alerted in seconds, and investigators called in while anevent is still in progress. Some of therepeater groups in larger cities number500 or more, and at any one time aconsiderable number will be listening.

OK, you're sold on the usefulnessof ham radio liaison, but you don't knowan amateur radio operator. How do youcontact one who is interested in UFOsand willing to cooperate with you? There are lots of ways, easier for thosewho live in cities. But persistent inquirywill no doubt turn up a willing ham inalmost any part of the country, or theworld for that matter.

• License plates. In almost everystate, amateur radio operators have

16

special plates listing their call letters. These will be from four to sixcharacters with a single numberdenoting the call area in the middle. Some examples: N1JS, WONC,K8NQN, WA3QLW. There may ormay not be a special antenna on the car.If you see one of these fellows in aparking lot or drive past his home, strike up a conversation. Even if he orshe isn't interested in UFOs, theyprobably know another ham who is.

• Antennas. Look for towers inbackyards carrying large beams havingsevera l h o r i z o n t a l m e m b e r s .Distinguish these from CB antennas, which may have only two verticalmembers or an umbrella shape. Ask theowner or neighbors about it andintroduce yourself to the ham.

• Radio clubs. Watch forannouncements of radio club meetings, classes or hamfests in your area, whereyou can meet large numbers of amateuroperators. There may be a ham columnin your city paper, or a ham who ismentioned in an article. Radio clubs arealways looking for speakers, and wouldwelcome a talk on UFOs. This couldbring you many new and helpful friendsin a hurry.

• Public events. Look for hamswith their handhelds at parades andother events where they oftencoordinate effor ts and providecommunications. Show some interest, and then bring up your UFO work.

• Listen on 144-146 MHz. If youhave a radio which covers the publicservice bands, listen carefully on thesefrequencies for two meter FMrepeaters or simplex transmissions, thehams will be in your city or area, andcan be tracked down from their callletters by consulting a Callbook in alocal radio store.

• Ask TV repairmen and electronictechnicians if they are hams or know a

(California Report, Continued)that the "people" will think themimperfect, too. Funding, when it comes, will most likely emerge from groups inthe general population whose thinkingis less rigid than scientists and whoseminds, unlike officialdom, are less afraidto accept the unknown.

Secondly, the purpose of UFOs.does not seem to be directed towardchanging science's world paradigm.Instead, their purpose seems to be toopen up a larger view of the essentialnature of man. UFOs seem to beteaching the human race what liesahead in the future for us all.

Mary Terri Taylor took the time tohelp a floundering student develop anidea about UFOs into professionalscreenplay form. Multiplied thousandsof times over, it is individuals like Marywho help -other investigators andscientists in many other ways. Behindeach researcher stand numerouspersons not intimately connected withthe subject per se, but who support andencourage them. These unknownpersons are making a vast contributiontoward understanding the nature ofUFOs. When the answer finally comes,it will be a triumph not only for theinvestigators and scientists but for theentire human race.

The Fund for UFO Re-search, Box 277, Mt. Rainier, MD20822 has obtained tax exemptstatus by a ruling of the InternalRevenue Service dated 26November 1979. This rulingclears the way for Americancitizens to contribute money tosupport specific UFO researchprojects and to deduct thecontributions from their Federalincome tax. Proposals frommembers of UFO groups — oranyone else — will be evaluatedby a National and InternationalBoard, and grants will be made tosupport specific research projectsthat show promise of advancingpublic knowledge and under-standing of UFO phenomena.

(Hams, Continued)ham. Radio and TV engineers are ',•frequently hams. Call your local .stations and ask. Policemen usuallyknow of local hams as we'll, or one maym a i n t a i n t h e i r c o m m u n i c a t i o nequipment.

This list of suggestions is by nomeans exhaustive. Use your ingenuity.During a local flap, CB operators canalso be of great assistance. There areREACT or emergency coordinationgroups in most areas who can mobilizea large number of local people in a

hurry, or access the telephone via abase station when necessary. Thepotentialities of two meter amateurradio repeaters will enable a ham friendto be of much greater value to you, however. Through the MUFON nets,he can monitor and exchange currentinformation about UFO sightings, publications and developments yourgroup would otherwise not knowabout. He need not necessarily be aMUFON member to provide such aservice.

So if you're not a ham, and not

interested in amateur radio, don't beturned off by it. You can make use of it,and it can help you. This is by way ofintroduction to NET NEWS, a MUFONUFO Journal feature which will attemptto bring you the latest UFO informationbeing discussed on the nets. I think

' you'll be interested. So don'tjbypass thecolumn because of the title and thebunch of figures at the top. Read on.You may be surprised enough to go outand find a ham to work with.

MUFON AMATEUR RADIO NETS:

SATURDAY 7237KHz 0800 EDT/EST NIJS3975 KHz 0800 CDT/CST WA9ARG

What happened to the 15 meterinternational UFO net which, waspublicized this summer? Dr. Hynekhimself heralded it in' the August issueof the Internationa! UFO Reporter.Supposedly meeting on 21.375 MHz at0200 UTC, the net was to facilitaterapid transfer of information on UFOsightings between countries. Yetmembers of MUFON and other UFOnets have monitored the frequency andcalled on it week after week to no avail.Attempts to contact the ham cited asnet control in a Florida publication haveproven fruitless. If there is such a net,we're not aware of it. Efforts to resolvethe problem are continuing. We'll keepyou informed here.

Meanwhile, at least two other netsnot affiliated with MUFON are knownto be thriving. A two meter UFO net isactive on 144.250 MHz SSB Fridayevenings at 0000 UTC. The time will notchange w i t h Dayl igh t Savings.WA3QLW and WA3BIB reportcoverage throughout the Harrisburg,Pa, area including York, Lancaster, andas far east as Baltimore at times. Bothcontrol operators are regulars on theMFUON 40 meter net.

A ten meter net has been active fora year now on 28.8 MHz (alternate27.795) on Thursday evenings at 0100UTC, also regardless of DaylightSavings. This is the Cincinnati AreaUFO Net. Net control is KA8BVO, withK8NQN assisting and providing liaisonwith the 40 meter section of theMUFON net. .

B e g i n n i n g J a n u a r y 5, theCincinnati Area UFO Net will convenean afternoon section on Saturdays toextend coverage to the Southwest andwestern states. Listen on or about 28.8MHz at 2000 UTC. We'll give it a tryduring January and see what happens. There is great need for a west coast

.MUFON net and liaison with theexisting central and east coast sections.Perhaps a 40 meter section could beorganized in the west, with liaison laterin the day through stations in thecentral part of the country. Be thinkingabout it.

The existing MUFON nets servethe eastern and central parts of the U.S.fairly well. NIJS, Joe Santangelo of TheAndreasson Affair fame, guidesinformation exchange 'from Maine andNorth Carolina west to-Michigan and

Missouri on the 40 meter section.WONC, Bill Armstrong, has to get upearly to make the net at 7 AM onSaturday mornings in St. Louis. For therest of us, it's not quite so early. He alsoacts as liaison with the 75 meter sectionwhich convenes an hour later.WA9ARG, Marshall Coins in Quincy,Illinois, takes care of an area fromIllinois and Missouri as far west asOklahoma. In the winter time, Ohiostations find it possible to check in. Newmembers are welcome in both nets. Butwest to the Rockies and beyond, nothing. CQ out there! WA5CTJ inTexas can sometimes make the 40meter section, but how are we going tofind out about the big flap or crash in thesouthwestern states or along the PacificCoast?

Readership assistance is solicitedin obtaining more information on twoimportant subjects recently discussedon the MUFON nets:

The first is an unsubstantiatedrumor, but a fascinating one. Netcontrol for the Cincinnati Area UFONet met a local college student fromColumbia who wanted to contact his

"UFO Phenomena and theBehavioral Scientist," a new bookedited by Richard F. Haines, Ph.D., hasjust been released by ScarescrowPress, Inc., 52 Liberty St., P.O. Box656, Metuchen, NJ 08840. Depite thefact that UFOs have been with us formany years and seem to be of morethan passing interest to increasingnumbers of people, relatively fewprofessional scientists have taken timeto comment on the wide variety ofphenomena associated with UFOs. It isbelieved that this is the first bookdevoted to this very purpose.P s y c h o l o g i s t s , s o c i o l o g i s t s ,anthropologists, a psychiatrist, and aparapsychologist have contributedauthoritative, scientific appraisals ofnumerous, phenomena associated withUFOs. This hardback book contains464 pages, numerous illustrations, andis priced at $18.50. Dick Haines was afestured speaker at MUFON's recentsymposium in Burlingame, Calif..

It is with the utmost sympathy thatwe acknowledge the passing on August30 of Virgina Planz, the wife of ourAlabama State Director, Ed Planz. Onthe more joyful side, may we extend ourcongratulations and best wishes toCarol Janet Walker and Forrest R.Lundberg who were married onOctober 27,1979, in Des Moines, Iowa.Forrest is the State Director for Iowaand served as the Chairman for the1975 MUFON UFO Symposium. TheOctober 16th issue of the Kansas City

Times featured an article andphotograph of George Eberhart,MUFON Staff Librarian, under theheading "Now That's Weird." The storytouched upon a few of the 100,000strange happenings that are related inGeorge's forthcoming 1,100 page bookto be published by Greenwood Press ofWestport, Conn., in 1980. Titled"Anamolies," the book will become thefirst comprehensive bibliography ofpublished accounts of mysteriousevents, conditions, behaviors, anddiscoveries in North America. Mr.Eberhart is a reference librarian at theUniversity of Kansas School of Law.

An article "Preserving the UFOLiterature — A .Status Report" byWilliam E. Jones, MUFON FieldInvestigator, will soon be published inthe MFUON UFO Journal. Bill hasoutlined his work and the positive stepsthat have been taken to interest majoruniversity libraries in establishingcollections of UFO material to bestored in an area of limited access andused on a non-circulating basis. Sincethis is a project sponsored by theMutual UFO Network, participatinglibraries will receive a complimentarysubscription to the MUFON UFOJournal and all symposium proceedingsfrom 1975 through 1979. Seven librarieshave already expressed their interestand desire to preserve the literature ofone of the most fascinating andchallenging aspects of our history —the search for the meaning of the UFO.

Jacques Vallee can now say "I toldyou so." I personally do not have toapologize, because this message (notan editorial) depicts the superb workbeing done by volunteers around theworld and is recognition for theiraccomplishments in UFOlogy.

REPORT ON "RETRIEVALS"MUFON plans to publish a

monograph by Leonard H. Stringfieldreporting the latest information fromvarious informants about allegedretrievals of crashed UFOs and smallhumanoid bodies. Stringfield firstreported publicly on these claims at theDayton, Ohio, ' MUFON UFOSymposium in 1978, and promised tocontribute a follow-up article to the •Journal as more information was

obtained. Despite the offer of a largesum of money from a well-knownpublication if he would reveal some ofhis sources, Stringfield not only haskept his promise but also has refused tocompromise his sources in any way. Somuch new information has beenobtained that MUFON has decided ona separate publication to do thematerial justice. Details will beannounced.

In Others' Words

Are there real "star wars" takingplace in outer space? According to anarticle in the September 25NATIONAL E N Q U I R E R , themysterious explosions in deep spacewhich have been detected by varioussatellites may well representintergalactic warefare of some sort. TheOctober 9 issue presented a summaryof the incident in which Minnesotadeputy sheriff Val Johnson wasstunned by a low-flying UFO. thedifferent types of reported UFOoccupants are detailed in the October16 issue, based on the researchconducted by'MUFON's HumanoidStudy Group. Former astronaut DekeSlay ton tells of his 1951 encounter witha UFO in the October 23 issue.

THE STAR for October 2 presentsadditional in fo rmat ion on theMinnesota deputy's UFO experienceand tells of other happenings in thewestern portion of that state.

BEYOND REALITY'S "UFOSpecial Issue" (not to be confused withthe quarterly UFO UPDATE from thesame publisher) is nothing more than

reprints of articles appearing in pastissues of BEYOND REALITY. It willapparently be published on an annualbasis at $2.00 per copy.

James Oberg's "UFO Update"column in the October issue of OMNIrehashes the 1908 Siberian explosion ofwhatever-it-was. Oberg, of course, favors a natural explanation for theevent, quoting various "experts" whosuggest the object in question was asmall comet.

Those pundits who loudlyproclaim that life on the other planets ofour solar system has been shown to bean impossibility should take the time toread David Chandler's LIFE ON MARSbefore continuing their negativepronouncements. Chandler's bookcontains no information on UFOs, butin his analysis of the results obtainedfrom the Viking landers, the authorconcludes that "most people are notaware of how close we are to the proofof life on Mars." Not only might there bemicro-organisms and plant life on Mars, but Chandler's examination of suchthings as the "Pyramids of Elysium"

show that intelligent (and, apparently,highly-advanced) lifeforms may haveexisted there at one time. If so, theremight well be significant implications forUFO research. For an excellentsummary of what we now know aboutMars and what we might find whenmanned expeditions land there, LIFEON MARS is highly recommended. The price is $9.95 from E.P. Dutton, 2Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016.

According to compiler/editorRonald Story, Doubleday's long-awaited project, THE ENCYCLO-PEDIA OF UFOs, is now set forpublication in June 1980. It will be alarge volume of around 500 pages, selling for about $25.00 in hardcoverand $12.95 in paperback. Additionaldetails will be presented in futurecolumns. Story is now working onanother book, UFOs AND THELIMITS OF SCIENCE, to be publishedby William Morrow in 1980. This will bea presentation of the "best" UFO cases,as selected by various researchers.

(Hams, Continued)father there. Learning of his interest inUFOs, the young man told him of anarea in his country which was guardedby American soldiers. Local citizens areangry because, they are denied accessto part of their country by foreigntroops, the student said. Located about100 miles south of Bogota in an isolatedregion, it is known as Sierra DelaMacarena. And what is being guardedthere? The people all believe it is aUFO! So says the student. Hamscontacting Columbia are asked toinvestigate this rumor. PerhapsMUFON's South American represent-atives can shed some light on thematter.

We are also researching the UFO

movies which were shown to radarspecialists in various branches of themilitary service during the 1950's.Investigators who are able to providefurther information on this subject areasked to forward it to the author.Leonard Stringfield now has threeconfirmations of such a movie and weare seeking more. Former radarspecialists are likely to have becomehams.

And a late flash to update theMinnesota incident in which a UFOapparently smashed the windshield andheadlight of a police car on August 27.Through WONC, we learned that theFord Motor Company is piecing thebroken glass together arid also has thebent antennas. John Schuessler told

Dr. Armstrong that Ford is cooperatingclosely with Allan Hendry of CUFOS inthe investigation.

. The lull in sightings and landingsevident throughout the summercontinues. None were reported on the40 meter net on October 6. One Bigfootreport was relayed, in which footprintsand a thumbprint were said to havebeen collected in Danville, Michigan, inSeptember.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE byWaltAndrus

Jacques Vallee may have madereference to the MUFON UFOJOURNAL in the book 'The Edge ofReality," which he co-authored with J.Allen Hynek when he made thefollowing comment on page 223: "So ifyou buy the typical bulletin of one ofthose groups, you will have a two-pageeditorial that says Mr. Such-and-Suchresigned; Mrs. So-and-So's kneesaren't getting any better (club news);So-and-So gave a lecture and it wasenthusiastically reported in theMorning Star Register; and we'remaking great progress." The Director'sMessage may vary from an editorial onthe scientific techniques for improvingthe study of UFOlogy to "news aroundthe network." This month's messagemay confirm Mr. Vallee's evaluation.Jacques may be critical of the UFOorganizations, but he fails to take intoconsideration that a dedicated group ofvolunteers can accomplish far more in ashorter period of time that he can as anindividual. If it wasn't for the UFOreports that researchers worldwidehave shared with Mr. Vallee, hewouldn't have a computerized catalogtoday.

In retrospect, Jacques ac-knowledges the fine work of Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos on page 79sharing his catalog of close encounterswith UFOs in the Iberian Peninsula. Wewould like to echo Mr. Vallee'ssentiments as it concerns the seriouswork being done by Mr. Ballester, as weannounce his appointment as theRepresentative for Spain working withPedro Redon-Trabal. Vicente's mailingaddress is Guardia Civil, 9, Derecha-16a, Valencia-10 Spain. Vicente hasserved as a Research Specialist toMUFON for several years, but now willtake on a more active role representinghis nation. It is a pleasure to welcomeone of the foremost UFO researchersof Europe into our midst.
