The word Pentecost comes from the Greek language and means fiftieth
Pentecost was one of three important Jewish festivals and all males were required to appear before God
Pentecost was celebrated on the fiftieth day after the second day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread or the Passover
It is celebrated 10 days after the Ascension
Pentecost is also called Whitsunday especially in the United Kingdom
The term Whitsunday means white Sunday and is a reminder of the white robes given to those who were baptized at the Easter Vigil
Pentecost is also know as the feast of weeks
It occurs seven weeks after the beginning of the harvest (Lev 2310ndash11 Deut 169) and it also coincides with the giving of the law to Moses on Mt Sinai
The feast has its beginning in the Torah the Pentateuch or the first five books of the Bible and is mentioned in four of those five books
Returning to Genesis 12
The earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God rdquo
In Hebrew the language of the Old Testament the word used for spirit is breath wind or spirit
Jumping ahead to the Acts of the Apostles often just called ldquoActsrdquo we read ldquo22 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like a rush of a mighty wind
