On April 11 2013 students from the South Sumter JROTC program participated in an intramural orienteering event - score orienteering in the morning and a relay in the afternoon. Seven teams of four students each were part of the first orienteering competition to be held in Sumter County.

Twenty-eight students in the South Sumter High School NJROTC program participated in a day of orienteering competition at Dade Battlefield Historical State Park

Teams of four divided up and locate sixteen control points in as little time as possible

Some teams set off faster than others.However in orienteering it isoften better to be careful and know exactly where you are going.

When part of the team had completed their assignment they waited for the rest of the team to return before they could check in

As the Score Orienteering wrapped up, teams checked in and headed to a lunch break. The day included a lesson on the history of the area around the time of the Indian Wars.

The afternoon relay event was hotly contested with seven teams vying to find controls on new courses.
