2012 Boys U15 Teamprofile

At the National Championships in Toronto last summer, the U15 Team Ontario Boys won their five games by an average of 33 points. After they defeated British Columbia by 37 in the Finals to earn the gold medal, head coach Jeff Giovanatti spoke of his players staying on course and dreaming big. “I’m proud and humble; they’re a great group of kids to coach,” Giovanatti said.

Many of the players have indeed stayed on course and dreamed big, with some moving on to the U17 team. Going into the Nationals in Sherbrooke, the U15 team has almost an entirely new roster. Only Nolan Narrain of Hamilton returns from the team that won gold at Humber College in 2011. He’s joined, though, by a number of players who have won big at Ontario Cup for their respective clubs and at the high school level. Expect them to be ready.

Giovanatti will be prepared, too, back on the sideline with another great group of boys. Ontario Basketball recognized the deep talent pool in the province and has created a second team or “development” squad at the Under 15 level. These talented athletes will train with the provincial team, travel and compete in AAU events. Rest assured, they’re dreaming of more dominance.

CHRIS CHENGHEAD COACH

Cheng won a gold medal at Nationals as the head coach of U17 Team Ontario in 2011 and won a silver medal in 2010 … As assistant coach of U17 Team Ontario, he won bronze medals at the

Nationals in 2008 and the Canada Summer Games in 2009 … NCCP Level 3 certified coach and learning facilitator … 2011 OBA Elite Male Coach of the Year … A coach at the Centre For Performance for the past five years … Assistant coach of York University’s men’s basketball team … Won two provincial championships and made two quarter-final appearances at the National Championships as an assistant coach on the Humber College men’s varsity team from 2004-2008 … Head coach of Humber’s junior varsity team for two seasons, winning seven league tournaments and finishing with a record of 60-5.

Kemar Alleyne, Connor Gilmore, Marcus Lewis, Chris McComber, and Mackenzie Morrison just want to do it again. They were on the U17 Team Ontario Boys squad that won gold at Humber College in Toronto in 2011. They remember former Team Ontario player and current San Antonio Spur draftee Cory Joseph talking to them before they beat Nova Scotia in the Finals. That win avenged their loss in the 2010 gold medal game against Quebec.

This summer in Sherbrooke, Quebec, they’ll be joined by numerous players who won gold with the U15 boys last summer, including First-Team All-Stars Devonte Campbell and Brody Clarke. Five of the boys — Oakville’s Jake Babic and Anthony Pate, Toronto’s Malcolm Duvivier and Tyrell Green and Nepean’s McComber — will be coming off a taste of competition on the international stage. They were on Canada’s National Cadet Team this year, the group that competed at the FIBA U17 World Championship in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Head coach Chris Cheng and assistant coach Fatih Akser are back on the sideline for the third straight year, joined by Sherwyn Benn who returned after a couple of years away from the provincial stream. They all have the same goal in mind: sweep the tournament again.

2012 girls U15 Teamprofile

Having won each national championship since 2005, Team Ontario is riding a 40-game winning streak heading into Fredericton this summer. Last summer, they dominated the Nationals, beating Quebec 76-59 in the final game of a tournament that saw them without a lead at the end of a quarter just once.

This year in Fredericton, it will be about continuing that dominance with a mostly new cast of characters. Ten players from last year’s squad

to the U17 team. Returning are forward Bridget Carleton (Chatham) and guard Yasmyne Salhia-Bernales (Toronto). While the remaining members of Ontario don’t have experience at the Nationals, this team isn’t short on talent. This U15 team is loaded with players who have experience in the Ontario Cup and OFSAA, with most being very familiar with tournament MVP awards.

The coaching staff has seen some changes since the U15’s most recent gold medal, with Nate McKibbon taking over as head coach after winning gold as an assistant with the U17 team a year ago. With him are three assistants making their first appearances behind a

Team Ontario bench, but they all bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in coaching basketball in this province. With a quality training camp and AAU warm-up events, all are poised to keep the streak alive.

2012 girls U17 Teamprofile

Last summer in Winnipeg, the U17 Team Ontario girls, coached by Janine Day, won gold at the Nationals rather convincingly. The gold medal game was a rematch of the 2010 final versus British Columbia when Ontario dropped a heart-breaker in double overtime. This time around, revenge was sweet with an 80-41 dominating performance over B.C.

Those U17 girls relied heavily on their guard play from Dakota Whyte (Ajax) and Katie Polischuk (Brantford). Whyte was named Tournament MVP and Polischuk was a First Team All-Star. This year, the squad has a different look but has lots of Team Ontario experience. Forwards Cheyanne Roger and Sam Cooper return, joined by most of last summer’s gold medal-winning U15 girls team — 10 players including the MVP of the 2011 Nationals, Kia Nurse, and two All-Stars, Christina Buttenham and Mikalah Mulrain, made the leap from U15 to U17.

U15 alumni should feel right at home, though, as head coach Jodi Gram, who led them to their gold medal in Winnipeg, now leads this U17 squad. She brought assistant Lindsay Walsh with her, too. In Fredericton, they’ll try to duplicate their success.
