The Truth about Databases: Getting to the FACTS on SAP® Sybase® Adaptive Server® Enterprise

Let’s set the record straight. Our competitors have propagated some MYTHS about SAP Sybase ASE so herein are the FACTS about SAP Sybase ASE. No mud-slinging, no name calling, no innuendo — just the FACTS about SAP Sybase ASE costs, performance, efficiency, security, reliability, availability, and application suitability.

efficient Operations SAP Sybase ASE is very complex and difficult to manage.

In fact, SAP Sybase ASE requires significantly fewer IT staff resources and fewer hours of training. For typical enterprise customers, IDC estimated a cost savings over 5 years of $340,000 per 100 users of ASE over other database management systems. Bloor Research found license savings of 28%, support savings of 32% and DBA savings of 32%.

Security SAP Sybase ASE is complex and requires frequent and extensive maintenace before it is considered secure.

In fact, SAP Sybase ASE is highly secure and according to Bloor requires 22% fewer security patches than Oracle, suggesting that SAP Sybase ASE is less vulnerable. In addition, IDC’s research showed ASE had 39% less unplanned downtime than other enterprise database management systems, proving the robustness of ASE Security and resiliency.

investment Protection It is risky to invest in SAP Sybase ASE, especially if there is ANY consideration to move to SAP HANA in the future.

In fact, ASE has been the fastest growing database for supporting Business Suite applications, with a large number of successful customer installations since ASE’s Business Suite certification in April 2012 — both new and migration customers. In addition, SAP will provide complete and total investment protection with SAP Sybase ASE when customers migrate to SAP HANA — 100% of what was invested in ASE will be credited towards the SAP HANA license acquisition costs.

availability SAP Sybase ASE does not have a disaster recovery solution.

In fact, disaster recovery for SAP Sybase ASE is provided by sophisticated clustering and unique logical replication that allows long distance recovery options (e.g. a single storm or earthquake will not knock out all recovery sites).

Optimized Data Stores

SAP HANA and SAP Sybase ASE are competitive technologies. Customers must select either a disk- based OR in-memory option, not both.

In fact, the SAP Real-time Data Platform (RTDP) delivers a single platform with embedded engines for in-memory, historical, streaming and mobile data management requirements in addition to standard RDBMS database. Both SAP Sybase ASE and SAP HANA are key components of the RTDP platform that interoperate together. A customer choosing to run a custom application on ASE can replicate data from that application to HANA for real-time reporting and analytics. A custom application running on HANA can transparently access, virtualize and analyze data stored in ASE without any data movement or data duplication. With RTDP, SAP lets the customer decide what type of data management is best for EVERY application need.

reliability DBAs are hesitant to work with SAP Sybase ASE due to concerns over product stability.

In fact, 90% of top global banks and security firms trust SAP Sybase ASE to run their business. IDC found ASE to be 39% more reliable (39% more uptime than other database systems). Bloor Research found ASE to have 22% less time applying security patches and 21% less time to resolve support issues than Oracle.

Suitability for Globally Distributed Systems

SAP Sybase ASE is best suited to simple regional systems.

In fact, SAP Sybase ASE is proven on Wall Street with multiple globally distributed systems — for round the world trading — 24x7x365. Indian Railways serves 20 million passengers daily using a distributed SAP Sybase ASE system for ticketing and train scheduling.
