First Week and Convey:Insight: A Simple Lesson Plan The first days of school are often daunting. You may not have textbooks yet. Or you simply may want a fun,but enlightening activity introductory activity. Here is a “lesson plan” that can be used by almost anyone. It works well with the Convey:Insight response system and as a way to introduce response technology It is best used for a history or social studies class, but really applies anywhere you want to emphasize that learning requires students to observe and question. This lesson costs about $1.50 to do. That is assuming you use it 5 times with 30 students per class. Begin by giving each student a penny. Then ask them to look very closely at the penny and observe everything they can For history or social studies teachers, the concept being demonstrated is that history is all around us and we have to stop and take notice. There is a lot of information on a Penny. Even without reponse pads, one could write questions on a board and ask the students about what they observe.

First Week and Convey:Insight:

A Simple Lesson Plan The first days of school are often daunting.

However, this serves as both a good first day activity and a way to introduce Convey:insight into the class. It would be easy to make questions abouthe penny into Convey :Insight Questions 1-Whose picture is on the penny? 2-What building is one the back? 3-What does “E pluribus Unum” mean (Latin: From many, one) 4-Why is it called one CENT? 5-What is it made of? (During World War II, pennies were made of steel, because copper was needed for the war effort0 6 What does the small letter D stand for? (D is for Denver Mint) 7 –If you VERY closely the building someone is sitting in the doorway? Who is it? (You can see Abe Lincoln) 8-A famous speech has given on the steps on this memorial in 1964. What was it? Dr. Martin Luther King gave the famous “I have a dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Here is the YouTube address for that clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smEqnnklfYs (School policies vary on using YouTube. Use your discretion, as always)

You can also use a “virtual penny”

If you have a visual presenter /documet camera, you can also use that , even in cojunction with “real pennies” to point out any of the aspects you are discussing.

Dukane, of course , offers a full ine of visual Presenters : http://www.dukane.com/av/products/VisualizersCameras.asp There are more questions and observations . You could discuss the Classic Architecture of the Lincoln Memorial. You may have students that have visited the Mall . A close up of the Lincoln statue there reveals a secret code. Lincoln’s right hand is making the symbol for “A” in sign language. His left hand signals an “L”. Some other “first week activities” 1-As a way to have students introduce each other, have each write down a true statement about themselves and 2 false ones. Example: A-Johnny plays in the NBA B-Johnny has driven in NASCAR C-Johnny has two sisters. Kids are curious about their teachers, so you can also use yourself as an example and Have the kids guess abou true or fales statements about their instructor. These ideas simply serve as ways to introduce the Convey:Inisight system. These ideas could of course be used without reponse pads.
