INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF ASTRONOMY
The KSSP, being a voluntary organization involved
in popularization of science, with 35,000 members
and 1250 units, attempted to make use of International Year of Astronomy
(IYA) to initiate a major Science
Communication Mission in the State of Kerala, India

International Year of Astronomy (IYA)inaugurated by Dr T K Alex, Scientist Indian Space Research Organization
1000 GALILEO NIGHTS Night sky watch camps for children and adults
with amateur telescopes were organized in 1000 locations. This has lead to the formation of nearly thirty-five amateur astronomy clubs
TELESCOPE MAKING CAMPS
Telescope making camps were conducted
by trained school teachers all over the State
using kits prepared by the organization. Few
thousand pieces of simple two inch
refractor telescopes were made with locally
available materials.

PRESENTING PROGRAMS IN EVERY NOOK AND CORNER OF KERALA
SPEECHES
Around 3200 interactive classes and discussions were conducted in 1050 locations spread
across the state of Kerala. All classes were taken by nearly 600 trained resource persons
working on voluntary basis. Classes were differentially organized for students (linking
with curriculum) and public (linking with life). It will be continued in the year 2010 also,
especially in schools.
Seminars were organized in Universities and Colleges to introduce Astronomers and
Scientists from Kerala such as Vainu Bappu (who was the President of
International Astronomic Union) R S Krishnan ,Janaki Ammal and G. N.
Ramachandran
Reminiscence of R S Krishnan inaugurated by Paloli Muhammad Kutty ,the Minister Kerala
Reminiscence of Vinu Bappu & Janaki Ammal inaugurated by Dr Savyasachi Chatterjee Indian Institute of AstroPhysics Bangalore.
Reminiscence of GN Ramachandran inaugurated by Prof Pappootty Director Encyclopedia
Reminiscence of Gopinath Kartha inaugurated by Dr B Iqbal ,the former Vice Chancellor Kerala University
23 books on themes related to astronomy with a print-order of
1000 - 16,000 each were published/ reprinted and sold. In addition 6
pamphlets and special issues of 5 periodicals were brought out.
