• Typhoon Morakot hit TW on Aug 8, 2009
• Existing response systems were overloaded
• One user mentioned about Sahana on Twitter
• Dr. Hsiao built Sahana on 11th, Aug then called up several volunteers to do translation with some helps from the simplified-chinese PO file
• IBM Taiwan also contributed to the translation work before they demonstrated Sahana to National Fire Agency

• Several local developers set up various situation/alert systems from scratch and got lots of response soon
• Doctor Billy Pan worked on a situation map based on Google API and was supported by google day after

• SahanaTW conference for 200 people will be hold on July,30 which is supported by III
• Modification for PHP is almost done
• Combination with PHP and PY(mapping, hospital,
messaging) is on the way and expected to be done by Oct.
• Migration from php to py is a plan for 2011

Challenges• For government, adding budget is usually the first
response after a disaster• With mandate budget to execute, “free” is usually
not the top priority for government • Biz giants provide expensive one-stop solution for
the public sectors being the common practice in Taiwan
• Most users for SahanaTW are non-programmers• Non-profit orgs are picky for software, both UI and
functionalities• Fear of IT is still an issue for people in npo

Opportunities
• Some small NPOs would like to try SahanaTW as a daily operation tool
• Key persons from gov will join the conference on 7/30 and in-person meeting with government official has arranged
