The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) built several ‘grand hotels’ across the country in varying ‘chateau’ styles: the Château Frontenac, the Banff Springs Hotel, the Royal York Hotel, and the Empress.

The grand Hotel Frontenac, more widely known as Château Frontenac, sits on a hill high above the city streets of Quebec City along the St. Lawrence River.

Although it rests in Canada, Hotel Frontenac was actually designed by the American architect Bruce Price and opened at the end of the 1800s, in 1893.

The Château Frontenac was named in honour of Louis de Buade, Count of Frontenac, who was governor of the colony of New France from 1672 to 1682 and 1689 to 1698.

The Château was built not too far from the historic Citadelle, whose construction Frontenac had begun at the end of the 17th century.

In 1980, Château Frontenac hotel was designated a National Historic Site of Canada and rightly so as this beautiful structure is widely recognized as the heart of Quebec City.
