AIM: How do mitochondria make ATP energy for cells?

DO NOW:1. Where would we find more

mitochondria: muscle cells or skin cells? Why?

2. Where can we find mitochondria?

Cellular Respiration

• Process that takes energy from sugar molecules (organic molecules) & places it into molecules of ATP

• Glucose (sugar) energy is converted into ATP energy

• ATP is the usable form of energy for all living things

• Requires oxygen aerobic respiration• Takes place in mitochondria of both animal &

plant cells

Mitochondrion

Let’s Look at the Reaction!Glucose & Oxygen Carbon Dioxide & Water & ATP

WORD EQUATION

C6H 12O6 & O2 CO2 & H2O & ATPCHEMICAL EQUATION

Question: What are the reactants / substrates in the reaction?

Question: What are the products of the reaction?

Question

• What kind of organic catalysts are involved in cellular respiration? Hint: They speed up the rate of this reaction, making it more efficient!

Answer:___________________

ATP Breakdown

• ATP energy, which has 3 phosphate groups, is released, when it is broken down into a molecule called ADP, which has 2 phosphate groups

Common Misconceptions

• Cellular respiration is breathing it’s not! It is a chemical form of respiration

• Typical respiration is a physical process & involves the exchange of gases which are needed for cellular respiration

• Inhaling & exhaling does not give you ATP energy

Humans & Anaerobic Respiration

• At times, humans may be forced to get energy by way of Anaerobic Respiration (without using oxygen) we produce LACTIC ACID, during these times, which accumulates in our muscles, & causes the “burn” & pain that you feel

• Ex. strenous exercise• Less efficient or less ATP made

Q: What will build up in this girl’s muscles?
