Thomas really scared us all. Long days and nights of endless rain. Emergency along the coast. However, as every coin has another side, we
ended up with a beautiful new stretch of the Coastal Highway near Piñuelas beach, adjacent to the ocean and with breathtaking views of Ballena Island.
On the other hand, Bahía is proud to now have paved access to the Marino National Park.
We are highly compensated with the colors of the summer that change everything. The best time is just before sunset when the green of the lush vegetation changes into golden green, followed by the most spectacular sunsets.
The macaws are returning to Costa Ballena. Since the tree felling and burning of vast lands has diminished, the exotic birds have found their food
again in the almonds trees. We are preparing for another big
surfing competition in Costa Ballena: February 19th, 2011, at Hermosa Beach. And don’t miss the Full Moon Parties in Uvita on January19th !
We’ve got it all in Costa Ballena for your enjoyment: beaches, mountains, rivers and waterfalls, fine dining and endless activities. In the pages “What to do?”, you’ll find suggestions for action or leisure. You’ll see that Ballena Tales is sectioned by location: Blue – Dominical, Orange – Uvita, and Green - Ojochal.
Remember that we are not in Disneyland; adventure takes you to the real jungle. We are happy to have you back with us. Welcome and take good care of what we love so much: our Costa Ballena. nCordialmente ~ Cordially

This was what he first offered at his cabinas in Dominical, the night for $5. This is some 16 years ago; now the guy from San Clemente,
Southern California, owns the San Clemente restaurant and bar in Dominical, just where Rancho Memo used to be. At that time there were only a few restaurants, and with the introduction of his Mexican-American food, soon thereafter all the locals and tourists from the States showed up at his place. Some of them well known, such as Roy Gonzalez, who has long been an icon in the surfing industry's art and design circles. He actively participated in the decoration of the San Clemente surf theme
restaurant. The elevated VW-bus at the entrance to the place, the Elvis shrine, the mirrors and the photo gallery of antique surf boards, and the legendary father of surfing Duke Kahanamoku, are his creation. Friday night the in-crowd meets at the San Clemente disco. If you take your broken surf board and sign it, you will have a free beer and tapas to cheer you up. The next morning a big burrito is waiting for you, if you want it, with the best hot sauce that in 97 received the Fiery Food Challenge Award. San Clemente has become famous; it has been written up in the New York and Los Angeles Times and some TV shows. So, who is that guy from San Clemente, Southern California? n

The challenge is to find our soul’s deep calling under all the layers of external
experiences and accumulated expectations that have built up over our lifetime – from friends, family, school and others. Perhaps the way to find it without fighting is to simply let all this mental conditioning go and put greater attention into what we really enjoy doing on a daily basis. Some people can find their Dharma through challenges or personal tragedies, or through an obstacle that can teach us a path to follow. Our Dharma is to do that which gives us a purpose in life that is fulfilling. It enlivens our spirit and opens our hearts. It is something special within us
that we can perform in order to serve others that fills us with contentment. It is about finding our path. Maybe you are gifted with a great amount of creativity that you can develop in order to provide some form of art to the world; or maybe your path can be lead to healing people, leading a movement, defending people’s rights, and many other ways. Our Dharma is what fulfils us. It lifts our spirit and opens our heart and is a powerful energy that makes our work special and unique. Following our Dharma may not always be comfortable or easy, but it brings a sense of serenity that makes us stay strong even through difficult or challenging times. n

Finding our own Dharma
Leí u na frase del
libro Comer, Rezar
& Amar de Elizabeth
Gilbert que dice “Debes
encontrar alguna otra
razón para trabajar que
no sea el deseo de éxito,
dinero o reconocimiento.
Debe venir de otro
lugar.”
En términos de yoga,
le llamamos a esto:
Encontrar nuestro
Dharma.
I read a quote from
the book Eat, Pray
& Love by Elizabeth
Gilbert that says “You
must find a reason to
work, other than the
desire for success, money
or recognition. It must
come from another
place.” In Yogic terms,
we call this: Finding
your Dharma.

¡PURA VIDA! n
In 2007, 14 year old Jimmy O’Connell and his family stayed in Escaleras. One day while out hiking they came across the
local one-room school and Jimmy wondered about the children and their families. Barbara Kozcak, their hostess, told them about PRO - the local group that helps children continue with their education after leaving grade school.Visits were arranged to both Escuela Puerto Nuevo and the Colegio (High school) in Uvita. Initially everyone was a bit shy, but somehow they communicated. Realizing how different his life was, the effect on Jimmy was profound. He vowed to do something to help his new found friends
further their studies. And he did!By organizing raffles and a golf contest, in 3 years Jimmy has raised $9,000 which he has sent to PRO to be used for High School scholarships. His classmates have now joined him in this wonderful endeavor.Next year he goes to college. A good student and a great athlete, he knows what it means to give back. A short walk in the woods meeting with local students impacted not only his own life, but most importantly, the lives of all those who have been helped.Thank you Jimmy - we wish you luck in the future. Consejitos Legales
Por ~ By Kristi Penland
Legal Tips
Being an Employer in Costa Rica can be a gratifying and beautiful experience if you know the law. I always get the same question: “Should I make an employment contract?” Yes, even if your employee only comes once a week. Although verbal contracts are accepted in different work relationships, proving the details is difficult. A written contract is an
effective way to verify the reality of the work relationship in the event of a labor dispute.
To define such relationship, Costa Rica’s legal system looks for three factors: 1) A service being provided, 2) an employer-employee structure 3) payment of any type.
Without a written contract, all of that could be altered, such as the extent of the work as well as the type of labor, and in which case it is the Employer’s responsibility to prove otherwise. As they say in Costa Rica, “Papelitos Hablan” meaning: “Papers talk”. While a contract signed by both parties may not guarantee an entirely flawless work relationship, it may defer an employee from pursuing legal action if there is any discrepancy. Plus, a contract is also helpful to later calculate the correct amounts for the required Christmas bonus as well as to know when an employee should receive his or her yearly vacation. More legal tips to come. n

She has 35 dressing recipes of her own for fish and meat. But one does not live by bread alone; this mother of three children is also a dedicated muralist. The first presentation of her art here in the area can be seen in the Catarata de Uvita. n

Misión Milagro No. 27 ~ Venezuela
miracle mission no. 27
Invited by the Venezuelan government, Mrs. Noemi Duarte Fonseca from Bahía traveled to Maracay, Aragua state, for the removal of a pterygium (abnormal growth of tissue over the cornea). This abnormal tissue is easily inflamed when exposed to the sun, wind or other
irritants. The patient has the sensation of a foreign body in the eye and it looks congested (red eye). Naomi had been suffering for a long time from this progressive disease with no chance to stop it, since this surgery in Costa Rica costs between 700,000 to one million colones. A relative told her that Venezuelan and Cuban doctors were examining prospective patients in Perez Zeledón. She qualified for the operation and traveled to Venezuela with a group of 52 others under the responsibility of their government and with all expenses paid.“For 15 days we stayed at the Hotel of the Military Circle in Maracay, a city about 100 km from the capital of Caracas. The regime was quite strict; we were not allowed to leave the premises. The food was good and the military and nurses very friendly. At the Social Security medical volunteers operated on us with local anesthesia. I felt it when they injected the eye; I felt everything even when they sutured the eye”, says Naomi. “We were ordered complete bed rest. After 24 hours, we all felt well and happy. Back home I always wear sunglasses. I am extremely grateful for the medical care and the good treatment”. n

Excuse me, but what is your name again?
And what excuse are you using? ‘Sorry, but I’m bad with names’. How does that make you look? Stupid? Not interested?I have good and bad news for you… Remembering
names is easy to learn. And yes, you look stupid and not inte-rested when you don’t remember a name. That is the bad news.Remembering names is all about attention. When you really pay attention to the person you meet, you will hear the name correctly (step 1), combine the name with the face (step 2), and use the name (step 3).
So here are the tricks!1. Be really interested in the other person (sounds easy, but is very difficult). And listen to his or her name! If you didn’t hear it well, just ask for it again! The first time you meet someone, no one minds if you ask!2. Combine the name with the person. There is a nice trick to do that. Make a name directory with the most common names. Get for every name an object which reminds you of that specific name. Let me explain. John is John Bon Jovi (so long hair and a guitar), every person whose name is John you picture (in your mind) with long hair and a guitar. Brian is Brian Ruiz (every Brian wears a national jersey from the CR national team) etc. 3. Use the name in the conversation and repeat it in your mind. So good luck trying these tricks and never forget my name again! (What’s the object related with Maarten?). n

Permaculture is a term coined by an Australian farmer and scientist named Bill Mollison in the 1970’s, and means permanence in agriculture and culture. Permaculture is a philosophy aimed at designing self-sustaining human farms, settlements, and communities. Permaculture farms share many features with organic farms as they are free of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Permaculture differs from organic farming in that a Permaculture farm tries to generate all the necessary resources directly on site. Both organic farming and Permaculture contrast sharply with modern conventional agriculture which depletes natural resources, pollutes our environment, and produces unhealthy food. Permaculture is a system of design based on patterns and cycles observed in Nature. Permaculture designers aim to arrange the elements within a farm or settlement in a way that is logical, energy-efficient, and harmonious with nature. If you would like to become a certified Permaculture designer, you can do so this February and March right here in Costa Ballena. UTSI, the Uvita Tropical Studies Institute, will host a two week Permaculture Design Course and one week Practicum with legendary Permaculture instructor Scott Pittman from February 19th to March 5th at Finca Carolina on La Union de Uvita. n

the Costa Ballena Club organized the Costa Ballena Fair at the Perla del Pacifico building in Uvita. It was the first time that 50 exhibitors – including hotels, retailers, tour operators and artists – gathered in a single exhibition. There were representatives from the entire coast and the best
decorated booth award was given to our neighbors from Ojochal: A dinner for two at Hotel Cuna del Angel. Visitors came from Palmar, Cortes, Quepos, Jaco and Perez Zeledón, and of course hundreds of local residents. On the same day the restaurant La Flor de la Sabana was opened on the ground floor of the building. Here the Tracopa bus line already has a fixed stop. The fair was enlivened with music, folk dances and the participation of the FantazzTico Circus from San Isidro. Thanks to all the collaborators and volunteers who made this event a great success! n

lA nuevA ComunidAd de BAhíA BAllenA-uvitA:
Oportunidades para un Desarrollo Comunitario Integrado
Phd. david matarrita/universidad texas A&m
Many communities in Costa Rica are experiencing dramatic changes as a result of the arrival of more people to the coastal and mountain communities, attracted by their
scenic beauty and nature. Typically these communities are not prepared to deal with the changes that are associated with the arrival of large numbers of temporary, seasonal, or permanent visitors. To identify the feelings and opinions of the residents, and to suggest solutions to problems that emerge, a group of researchers from the University of Costa Rica and Texas A & M are now working together. In our community, this effort is an implementation of a study which seeks to have greater understanding of the changes that Bahia Ballena-Uvita is currently experiencing. To achieve this objective, last July researchers from both universities spoke with members of our community - both Ticos and foreign residents. The study seeks to approach Ticos and foreign residents in order to improve the quality of life of the community. A better understanding of the perspectives and feelings of the residents can iron out differences and broaden a common ground, always with the purpose of developing integrated programs and activities for the benefit of Bahia Ballena, Uvita. n
The New Commu NiT y of Bahia BalleNa-uviTa:
Opportunities for an Integrated Community Development

¡Buena suerte! n
Although Costa Rica is not the cheapest country in Central America, when it comes to medicines, the prices seem exorbitant,
even more coming from a European country where you can purchase drugs at a much better price. Since I did not understand the reason why I had to spend much more in Costa Rica, I started researching. I found an article by Walter Marin Levy, a graduate in political science from The Republica.net from September 28, 2010, that gave me an explanation. The Costa Rican government itself encourages a monopoly on importing and distributing drugs through an executive order that says that only those who register a product, are also authorized to distribute it. Another explanation is that international manu-facturers can sell at a price that seems appropriate.
Knowing the strength in union, for the first time in 2010, Belize, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica got together to negotiate prices directly from pharmaceutical manufacturers, without intermediaries. They were to submit their best offer, a price reduction of up to 46%, mainly for hospital use drugs (Michelle Soto article in La Nación). A pharmacist in Uvita told me that the recom-mended profit margin on drugs is 25 to 30%. There are pharmacies that apply up to 40% or more. When the dealer gives them a discount, they do not pass it on to the consumer. That explains why the same drug may be more expensive in another pharmacy. For the consumer it means you have to compare prices or negotiate with the pharmacist. Good luck! n

Around the end of October we began hearing the distinctive "craak, craak" sounds of the lapa. The
frequency of the calls increased rapidly and after a week or so, sightings were reported at Playa Ballena beach. Rapidly thereafter there was an increase in the presence of pairs of lapas passing over, which quickly increased to become groups of six to twelve that were seen flying over to the north in the mornings and back south late in the day.
Now it is a daily occurrence to see groups flying over in that same pattern and about a month after the initial calls were noticed, small groups of birds began occasional visits to the almond trees around Villa Leonor. It is inspiring to watch the the big birds gliding into the highest reaching trees for fresh seeds, realizing that right in front of you is an example of conservation allowing a great creature like this to reclaim its ancestral territory. n

The CasaKit concept
When he first came, about 18 years ago, he arrived at Palmar Sur and from there took a taxi that drove him over sticks and stones, crossing un-bridged rivers to
finally get to Ojochal. He was surprised that with his passport in hand he could buy land, so he invested and resold. Very soon he was a reliable address for newcomers. At his famous ceviche stand in Piñuelas, the idea was born to establish a real estate agency. Being very familiar with customers’ needs when they are waiting for their construction to be finished or when they have acquired a lot in a
maritime terrestrial zone where constructions are not allowed, he invented the portable CasaKit. These pre-fabricated houses can adapt to any clients´ requirements and can be used as office space as living quarters. They can be placed on top of a container thus allowing for additional storage or parking space. No permits are necessary. The units can be equipped with air conditioning, solar panels and a bio-digestor. Starting price at $5,985.Product made with pride in Coronado and marketed by Osa Tropical Property (see ad back cover). n
Remy Champagne from Quebec really is an interesting character here on the coast. as a successful business man and owner of a well-known real estate agency, he knows the customs and laws in Costa Rica.

The best meat in Ojochalel Fuego is known for its steaks. The open air restaurant has a nice dining room with lots of
space between the tables. The owners have relied on landscaping and why shouldn’t they? The surroundings are so beautiful.
The menu definitely had a French slant with the appetizers being eggplant flan, cold carrot ginger soup, charcuterie and smoked fish. The house smoked
fish was delicious; the charcuterie was nicely presented and tasted good. For the main course one could chose either steak, pork, fish or chicken. We decided for the whole fish cooked in a banana leaf for two of us. We were more than satisfied. The steak was perfectly delicious and prepared exactly as ordered. The veggies tasted great and the potato dish was very yummy. We ended with a completely wonderful coconut flan that was definitely a high point.I’m certain that because of the time of year but there was only one choice for white wine and it was French chardonnay. There was an Argentinean Chardonnay by the glass. Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of French wine nor chardonnay. On the bright side the Carmenère from Chile was perfect. Portion sizes for the meat dishes were ample. The service was wonderful and as a testament to the restaurant’s popularity, the dining room was well attended on a Monday night. Consider El Fuego for a wonderful dining experience. (See ad opposite page)

enero 2011: gran apertura de Osa Mountain village Resort
INFO: guestservicesOMv@gmail.com - www.osamountainresort.com - 8976-5909 (see ad opp. page)
The jungle adventure resort opens with brand new 1, 2 and 3 bedroom villas and a community center, swimming pool, and a restaurant-bar with many of the veggies and fruit coming from their own gardens. And best of all: cooler temperatures than at the
beach and the most amazing views of the Grand Térraba River, the Fila Costeña Mountains and the Térraba River Valley. The moment when the sun sinks over Coronado Bay into the Pacific
Ocean will take your breath away. The accommodations are on the edge of the forest and you can walk right into your own jungle
adventure where birds and wildlife abound. This sustainable development resort sits on over 750 acres of land, starting at an elevation of 1,400 feet, and reaching an altitude of over 3,000 feet. Most of
it is primary and secondary forest. It is located about 40 minutes south of Dominical and 20 minutes north of of Palmar Norte, and is close to the Corcovado National Park, the Ballena Marine National Park, and the Sierpe mangroves that are teaming with wildlife. This eco-adventure resort features the already very successful zip line canopy tour with three waterfalls. Beach and other activities are also nearby.Aventure tours at the resort also include: Night-time Nature Walk - Jungle Camping Tour - Waterfall and Wildlife Hiking - Eco and Bird-watching Tours - Butterfly Paradise of Osa - Horseback Riding n
