Queridos lectores

Dear Readers

This time my words are somewhat emotional. As a result of the incident involving our Art Director, Philippe Chapuy, that left Ballena Tales without a

design base, we have received tremendous support. Philippe was given a computer only 10 days later, with all the necessary design programs licences.

For the first time, Ballena Tales met as an editorial team of nine freelance collaborators, and reached the conclusion that the magazine must re-emerge as a Phoenix from the Ashes: better format, more beautiful, better design, more space for good photography and articles, all related to Costa Ballena.

We have worked as never before to recreate the NEW BALLENA TALES from scratch. It is impossible to be perfect. Our goal has always been to publish the magazine on time: September 15th, Costa Rica’s Day of Independence.

Special thanks to our printers Colorgraf, who have always given us their assistance. n

Was it worthwhile? What do you think?

In Dominical is where the Surf begins – nevertheless, there are a lot of beaches along Costa Ballena which are apt for this sport.

El poder mágico de la mente

The magical power of the mind

diferencia! Te hace feliz o triste, enfadado o molesto.

Watching a soccer game, my state of mind changed within a split second. With that change my entire feeling shifted: from scared/uncertain to cer-tain and happy. That same fact changed the feeling of my neighbor from

happy to sad. That fact was ‘just a goal’. Every fact has different effects on a person. No news, I guess. But what do we do with that knowledge? Do we use it to our advantage? Most people accept feelings as facts. This is perfect for positive feelings, but too bad for negative ones. But consider it again, taking this soccer match as an example. A fact is a fact. Nothing more, nothing less. But the way you look at it makes all the difference! It makes you happy or sad/angry/upset. You choose how to looks at facts.

The way you look at things is set up in your mind! That’s the magic. By changing the focus, you change (the effect on) your life. It might take some training but it’s definitely worth it. You choose! Are you taking control of the way you look at things or are you a victim of your own thoughts? To start changing from victim to being in control, try this exercise, which every kid can show you. Sit down and look at the clouds. What do you see? Just clouds? Look again and shift your focus. There are ani-mals, heads, mountains, etc. With every adjustment of your focus you’ll see different things. Just like in real life. n (To be continued...)

Las fuertes y hábiles manos de Jutta

Jutta s strong,skilled hands

Precios populares. n

Jutta was born in Germany. At 16 she met a gifted master masseur who recommended she first strengthen her hands through rigorous exercise. At the age of 20, she

had completed her training as a massage therapist and decided to travel the world. She lived in Thailand and Hawaii - to escape the cold in her home country that had constantly punished her with cold fingers and toes due to Raynaud’s Syndrome..

Her first stop in Costa Rica was Uvita. In 1996 she had an accident that almost killed her. Then she worked for 9 years at the Bosque del Cabo Ecolodge, near Puerto Jimenez. Now she lives in Atenas. To celebrate her 32 years experience as a therapist, she returned to Uvita where she is giving treatments at the Farmers’ Market. Much to her surprise, she met people there whom she had treated at Bosque del Cabo. From now on, Jutta will come every two weeks to Uvita to provide treatments. She also treats chronic cases. Affordable pricing. n

DESCUBRIMIENTO ~ DiScOvery

Thirteen months ago, Greg Ely from Oregon, South Carolina, came to Costa Ballena and fell in love with the exuberance of nature in

the area. He bought Finca Bella Vista up in the Es-caleras Mountains where his Bella Vista Adventure Tours team invites you to guided horseback excur-sions. The tour takes you to the crest of the moun-tain, following the trails of the Indians who first li-ved on these hills. It is so impressive when you leave the lush jungle and find yourself on wild pasture land on top of the world. Towards the West you have the view over the immensity of the Pacific Ocean with the Nicoya Peninsula in the distance. Towards

the majestic mountains on the other side, you can distinguish Diamante Falls. Greg´s property in-cludes a large volcanic crater from an extinct volca-no. Wildlife is intact up here. You can observe tracks of jaguars, panthers and wild pigs. Each day they find more petroglyphs, vestiges of ancient cultures. The ancestors knew why they lived here. Greg offers horseback rides in the mountains, to the Poza Azul waterfalls in Dominicalito, to the beach, and of course to the magnificent Nauyaca Falls. There will be plenty of time to swim and enjoy a de-licious picnic. Transport from the Coastal Highway is available. n

Dr. Fernando Riera Silesky

Peligro en la Costanera Sur…

Danger on the Coastal Highway...

Without a doubt, the new highway has helped develop the area. However, this progress in turn has brought death to many animals which are hit by cars, especially the wild species of Costa Balle-na. I would like to raise awareness that if we run out of fauna and flora, the reason for which tou-

rists are attracted to our coastline will be lost forever. What is more beautiful than to see a toucan or a parrot flying by, or a monkey or a sloth with her baby on her back? Perhaps you have seen them before in a zoo, but you will never forget the exciting first impression when you see a wild animal in its own environment; especially if, like me, you did not grow up in an area as rich in biodiversity as Costa Ballena. The amount of animals killed or badly hurt by cars on the Costanera Sur is alarming. We find everything from iguanas to big cats. In my clinic we have treated at least five big cats including Margay cats and ocelots. We need to draw the drivers´ attention to this fact and perhaps build speed bumps. What we could do in short term is put signs up to reduce the speed, especially for the semi trucks and trailers. At the same time this would help reduce noise pollution and increase the safety of our Coastal Highway. If you have any comments on this topic, please write to the following address:

Cuasran inspects the blood that runs through the woods and feels the breath passing through the trees, Cuasran protects his children from evil, from arrogance of those who want to silence, those who want more. He fights for his children that promise life, who want peace and light, and one day die were they were born with bright eyes, fresh skin and free of marks.

In Talamanca there is also the Térraba village, which was characterized in the past by its fierceness, which led them to avoid to be dominated by the Spanish,

involving large displacements. Nowadays their struggle is not against other villages, but against the time, in order to recover the traditions that were lost when whites forced them to abandon them.Even their language was dispersed in the past, and today they have only a few phrases that were saved from their grandparents. They have started to write them in order to teach them at school. This is part of the mission of the Association for the Defense of the Térraba´s Indigenous Rights.Tourism has been instrumental in this task, because the resources the visitors leave can be reinvested, at the same time their culture is getting known. while encouraging kids and youth to learn, respect and care about it. n

Interview with Otto Geesink (founder) BT: Otto, what do the colors of the new logo mean?Otto: Our logo has three colors: green for the forests, yellow for the beaches and blue for the Pacific Ocean.BT: What is the purpose of the club? Otto: Costa Ballena is a place of different cultures and languages. To understand the cultures of our neighbors it is necessary to meet regularly and exchange ideas. The Costa Ballena Club is a multilingual society, open to ALL who live and work in Costa Ballena. The Club does not intend to solve problems; it just tries to inform its members. n

Interview with Tom Nagel - Costa Ballena ClubBT: Tom, do you think the club will fill a void of information in Costa Ballena?Tom: This is one of the purposes, to present experts we can refer to on a given subject of interest to the area. Topics may be proposed by the club members.BT: For what kind of audience are the talks intended? Will there be translation?Tom: It depends on the subject: the next presentation will be on health insurance, so I think it will be more interesting to foreigners. Ideally, these meetings will help form new friendships and business partnerships. We also need to talk about our social obligations with the schools, lifeguards, the police etc. Everyone is welcome to listen and participate. If we have the time we will translate.BT : Does the Club have its own headquarters?Tom: Not at the moment. The idea is to meet each time at another establishment. The last time it was at Sueños Tranquilos. Meanwhile, Otto’s email address is our headquarters. n

to learn how to surf you have to really want to do it, because the effort required at the beginning iss so great, that many abandon

this sport on their first day. It is important to use the correct board from the very beginning. Your surf shop can help you select the best one.

Important: It is essential to know how to swim - Do not enter the ocean by yourself - Do not surf when there is a threat of a thunderstorm - On your first tries, only get into the ocean when it is calm - Avoid rocky areas or corals, look for sandy bottoms - Find places where there are no people around to avoid accidents.

Always remember to put the rope or «leash» on the ankle of the foot that will be in the back before entering the water.

It is best to start with the froth, rowing strongly in the direction of the beach, while looking back to measure the distance and time it takes for the froth to reach you. Do not get up until you are sure that the wave can carry you and that you feel you no

longer need to continue rowing.Once you are on the wave, try to propel yourself

and jump in one movement trying to fall with one foot in front and one behind. Don´t kneel to stand up. Keep trying until you can do it!

Are surfing lessons any good? Of course, they are very useful. It is in your best interest to take at least three lessons in a surf school. Then you have the basic instructions to try on your own. n

Susana and Edward met in Mallorca, Balearic Islands - Spain. They agreed that both wanted to live in Costa Rica. In Bahia they found what they were looking for: the Pacific Ocean, lush nature, friendly people, the

most spectacular sunsets and very little infrastructure for tourism. Susana is a biologist and expert in marketing. For years she worked with German pharmaceutical giants. She has left this very stressful part of her life behind. “Spain”, she says, “the country where I was born, has been exploited for tourism for the last 40 years. I have observed the damage caused by excessive and uncontrolled developments. What we need in Costa Ballena is a tourism marketing approach that takes into account sustainable development thus disallowing the abuse of its natural resources”. Susana’s dream is to create a school for Environmental Studies and a Research Center, providing support to local groups. We will interview Eduardo in an upcoming issue, only anticipating that for over 15 years he was a well known disc jockey of the scene in Barcelona and Ibiza. n

although scuba diving is considered an extreme sport, it is safe and lots of fun when basic security rules are followed:

Get certified. Never dive alone. Follow safe diving practices and never dive beyond your level of competence. Choose a competent dive shop, member of a recognized dive association such as PADI. Credentials and experience are irreplaceable. Ask questions: Are regular, independent air quality tests being done and are reports available? Is all dive equipment well maintained? Nothing can ruin a dive more than faulty equipment, not to mention the safety hazards involved.

Tanks need a visual inspection every year and a hydrostatic test every five years. This is easily verified by

looking at the stickers and punch marks. The boat should always carry a first aid

kit, an oxygen kit and perhaps a defibrillator. Divers know that salt water dehydrates the body which in turn can affect diver safety. So having sufficient water, juice and fruits on board is a must. Little snacks not only give energy between dives but can help ease sea sickness. Radio contact between the boat and land is mandatory

as well as emergency equipment. This may seem like a long and daunting list to go

through. However, it can be easier. Shops that have credentials are proud to show them, guaranteeing you

a safe dive. n

Behind every great man there is always a great woman

a golden wedding anniversary as found in fairy tales: In an emotional celebration, Herta and Waldemar renewed their vows after 50 years of marriage. The elegant Austrian couple, owners of the Cristal Ballena Hotel and valued members of the community, were very much a couple in love.

Waldemar, giving his beautiful wife all the credit, provided the following recipe for a long and happy marriage:«Every morning she smiles at me and tells me that I look great. She has taken good care of her body and soul. She always supports me. There is mutual respect and there is room for personal development. She is patient with me. We plan the future together and express our love every day».The dance group of the Uvita High School, the Mariachis, and the trio “Brazilian Beat” from San José enli-vened the party. n

Siempre me apoya.

The kIngS of the swampcrocodiles and caimans are species of great evolutionary success. They populated the earth more

than 300 million years ago. The human being, as homo sapiens, has only been on the planet for about 195,000 years. Thus, long before the first settlers arrived in Costa Ballena, these reptiles

were already here, walking freely along the shores with no one daring to bother them.Crocodiles feed on other predators in the mangroves, and are therefore very important for the balance of this delicate ecosystem. Thanks to them, many crustaceans and fish survive in these dark waters during their youth, being able to swim to the ocean as adults. During the months of August and September the crocodile eggs hatch and the waters of the marshes are filled with crocodile babies. From birth

on, they are able to feed themselves by hunting insects, amphibians, fish and other small prey. Remember that in the mangroves there are crocodiles, that they have an important mission and are therefore protected by law. Some adults may reach up to seven meters in length. Crossing the estuary carries risks, especially for your pets. So it is better to use the bridges, and especially not to disturb the kings of the mangroves. n

reserva Playa Tortuga

RPT is poised to promote Awareness, Action and Alliances with different agencies, national and international. The main areas of study concentrate around Ojochal, Playa Tortuga, Isla garza and the Térraba River. With many other activities scheduled for volunteers, it is sure to have a draw from locals and tourists alike. With much work to be done throughout the year, volunteers are needed from July –January. historia ~ history

“Volando Canalete“

margarita Dinarte Rosales is the first woman to set foot on the wild grassland in what today is known as Ojochal. She came with

her husband Manuel Valdes from Cortés and stayed at La Chácara, Punta Mala. Years later the Hotel La Posada was built there. All they had brought with them was their clothes, a hen and a dog. Manuel soon found work with a man who had acquired large tracts of land in Ventanas. Margarita at home was managing an ever growing bunch of kids, planting maize and beans, bringing firewood and water from the Balsa River, sewing garments from sugar bags, sometimes showing the brand on the back of the new shirt. They ate whatever Manuel brought from the beach, fish and turtle eggs, or what he had hunted on Sundays in the forest. It was dangerous since tigers, lions and snakes abounded. All ailments were

cured with herbs. Sometimes they went by boat along the mangroves of the Térraba River to Villa Cortés where they bought kerosene or changed rice for a machete. With the help of a neighbor, Margarita gave birth to thirteen children, nine boys and four girls. “Those times were hard, we were very poor, but we gradually overcame our difficulties. How proud I was when, for the first time, I could make a gift to a dear friend of the family, Dr. Tomas Casas. I bought a shirt and some handkerchiefs for him, which cost me a fortune: 50 colones,” recalls the 92 year old lady with perfect posture and sparkling eyes. Only after the revolution of ‘48, did more and more people come and settle in Ojochal (the village of the Ojoche trees) as they fled from the capital in search of a new life. Margarita and Manuel were the ones who subscribed the name of Ojochal in the official registry in Cortés. n

for years Philippe and Mireille from Montpellier in France, sought a politically stable country with a favorable climate. After visiting Costa Rica for the first time, they knew that this was the country of their

dreams. They sold their bakery in France and came to Ojochal, a town where people speak Spanish and French. They recently opened their small Pancito Café near the entrance to the village. Daily they bake croissants, chocolate rolls, French baguettes, and sweet and savory pastries of all kinds. Also the coffee is excellent, and from the lovely terrace you can listen to the river not far away and watch the passers-by. Their 15 year old son Simon learned to surf in Costa Ballena and goes to high school in Uvita. n

We know now that the six first of the Ten Worlds: Hell, Hunger, Animality, Anger, Humanity or

Tranquillity, Heaven or Rapture, depend on external circumstances. In these worlds, we are governed by our environment. We feel happy if everything goes right and unhappy when things turn bad. Buddhism considers it a danger to base our life and happiness on something in perpetual movement. That’s what we call “the impermanence of phenomenon”, similar to quicksand.

What are the next four states of life? The next four states: Learning, Realization, Bodhisattva and Buddhahood, require our efforts. Learning is a state or inner world where we acquire knowledge of life. When we learn to improve or find a solution, we are

in the world of Learning. When we obtain responses to questions about our life, we are in the state of Reali-zation, or self-enlightment that is generally achieved by discipline. The scientist who finds a solution or discovers something new, attains a new understanding of the world. Or a musician, getting in the groove of a jazz pat-tern, exploring a thousand variations could have this state of chill that we feel when we master a difficult technique. But this state is dangerous because, very often, people fall into Anger (arrogance). A mother, who loves her child or a person visiting a friend at the hospital, manifests a piece of the state of Bodhisattva, which is the inner compassion. It’s characterised by the desire to help the others. nTo be continued...

We continue the dialogue about buddhism with our art director Philippe Chapuy. in the previous issue, we learnt about the six lower worlds. in this edition, let see what are the four noble Worlds...

in cases of acute, strong and/or spontaneous pain, it could be pain caused by pressure. When chewing on the suspect tooth, significant pain is experienced. Pushing on the tooth or tapping on it with a hard object creates pain. The tooth may have periods of no pain. Antibiotic therapy prescribed by a qualified

dentist usually reduces or eliminates the pain for a while. Pain on pressure may be indicative of a dead or dying tooth, but it also may indicate a cracked tooth or a tooth that has been affected by heavy chewing or bruxism. If the dentist finds a dead or dying tooth, you have the following alternatives: A Root canal (endodontics), or tooth extraction. n

• The examination for contact lenses is not the same as for glasses, eventually the recipes could be matching but that does not always occur. A contact lens patient, ideally should have his/her glasses, because if in case of inflammation or deterioration they are forced to discontinue the use of contact lenses, the bottom line is that the patients continue with their normal vision. • Use and replacement: a pair of contact lenses (depending on the brand) can be used for one day, a fortnight, a month or a year. When indications for replacement are given, you will as well be informed of the consequences on your eyes that could occur by using them too long. You as the user are responsible to remember when to discard your lenses. • The expiry date starts from the moment you remove the lens from its sterile blister or recipient, just as it happens with the cleaning solution for the contact lenses.Your optometrist as an expert in visual health is the only one who may indicate the proper use and replacement, as well as proper lubrication, disinfecting and wetting techniques of contact lenses. n
