What is big data?

Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data — so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. This data comes from everywhere: sensors used to gather climate information, posts to social media sites, digital pictures and videos, purchase transaction records, and cell phone GPS signals to name a few. This data is big data.

3 General Benefits of DataViz 1.  Great visualizations are efficient; 2.  Visualizations can help groups

achieve more insight into the nature of a problem and discover new understanding; and

3.  Great visualizations create a shared view of a situation and align folks on needed actions.

John Sviolkla, “Swimming in Data? Three Benefits of Visualization,” Harvard Business Review Blog Network, December 4, 2009..

Why Tableau? •  Shifts ownership of creative analytic

work from expert or “techie” to the average user.

•  Enables the average librarian to gather and analyze data in real-time – in concert with thought process.

•  Allows librarians to explore, analyze, and share data interactively.

•  Supports data-informed decision-making and a culture of assessment.

Why Tableau? Why Not Excel? Access? •  One size does not fit all •  Select tool appropriate for the

situation (Tableau, Excel, Access, SPSS, SAS, R)

Why Tableau? “In terms of generating useful, multidimensional visual analysis, it’s like going from an Etch-A-Sketch to Industrial Light and Magic.”

-  CFO Magazine (August 2007)
