DVC, a legacy to the people of India, 

emerged as a culmination of attempts made over a

whole century to control the wild and erratic

Damodar river(25,000sq.kms) covering the states of 

Bihar (now Jharkhand) & West Bengal.

After the 1943 flood devastation

central govt.& state govts. decided to plan designed

for achieving flood control, irrigation in the

Damodar Valley . Then gradually DVC used their

storage water for their power generation purpose.

In March 1948, the Damodar Valley Corporation act (Act No. XIV of 1948) was passed by the CentralLegislature.

Central & state govts. participated jointly for thepurpose of building the Damodar Valley Corporation.

Finally, the Corporation came into existence on 7thJuly, 1948 as the first multipurpose river valley projectof independent India.

To establish DVC as a mega

pithead power producer and distributor in the

Eastern Region and become a facilitator for allaround growth of the region enriching the

quality of lives of people.

Main missions are:

1. Flood control and irrigation.

2. Generation, transmission and distribution of power.3. Eco-Conservation and afforestation.

4. Socio-economic welfare of the inhabitants of the

Damodar valley.

5. Water supply for industrial and domestic use.

6. Navigation & drainage

7. Promotion & operation of schemes for irrigation

8. Control of soil erosion in valley area.

To realize DVCsMission, the following corporate objectives

have been identified for persuasion:

1. Generate maximum on sustainable basis through

implementation of best practices.2. Rejuvenate old generating units through refurbishment

/ replacement / comprehensive overhauling

programme .

3. Promotion of afforestation &control of soil erosion inthe Damodar valley.

4.Transmit, distribute and supply reliable and quality power

at competitive tariff.

5.Adopt measures for pollution of river. Etc
